THIRTEEN,
assassin's bullet⋆
( flashback )
THERE HAD ONLY been one time Ella shot a gun before the prison.
It happened after her mother was killed, less than a week later, to be specific. The Samuels family was left broken, surviving on the small will to live they had left. It was their father that kept them going, bringing them food, and finding places to take shelter in for the night.
Each of the girls kept to themselves, only clinging together in the night, when the monsters became more of an unseen threat. Their father tried to crack jokes here and there to cheer them up, but his efforts never succeeded. They needed a miracle, something to give them hope in the dark place they all trapped were in.
It was sunset that fateful day, and the girl's father had wandered off to the nearby stream to fill up their empty bottles. This left Ella in charge and to keep and eye on her siblings. Their father rarely left them like this, but because she was getting older, his trust in her grew too. A single pistol was tucked in her belt behind her shirt, one her father only gave her if it was necessary. She had never shot it though, or even put her finger on the trigger to fiddle with. The weapon terrified her, as it brought a lot of responsibility and courage to even consider firing it. They had all seen their father use to weapon, and it always left her in awe at how brave he could be, compared to her, at least.
Moments later, Ella was pacing around a tree, several feet away from their tent, one which would be their camp for the evening. The sounds of her sisters chatting from the tent could be heard from where she was, yet she kept her eyes' stare into the trees bark. Her mind often trailed off like this, especially after the death of their mother. She had found it surprisingly hard to keep focus on one thing, which in her whole life, had never been an issue.
So, when Mika started to scream, she barely even noticed.
Her young and pitiful screams rang all throughout the air, soon enough getting the attention of Ella, though. They sounded similar to their mother's own calls, but much more higher pitched, due to her younger age. Immediately whipping her head from around the tree, it soon became obvious why she was crying out.
