"I'm gonna walk your dog Nia, I'll be right back."

"Kay." Nia sighed looking down at her phone. Once again, her phone had been dry, besides a message from Celeste that was sent about 2 hours before.

"Where's the leash?"

"Where it always is...on the hook closest to the door." Nia says once again.

"Damn...what's your problem?"

"Nothing. Don't try me..." Nia said rolling her eyes.

"Someone oughta try you...with your messed up hip." Before Nia could react, the door had been slammed shut, and Nia had been met with silence. She waited...and waited...once she waited long enough, she could no longer here Stephan's foot steps outside in the hallway and decided to call Celeste.

Tears ran down her cheeks hoping that Celeste would answer her. For the first time that week, Celeste didn't send Nia to voice mail.

"Hello?"

"Celeste...I can't stay with Stephan anymore..."

"Nia, I told your ass this would happen if you kept Stephan around..."

"I-I know Celeste...it seemed like a good idea at first but now I know that I shouldn't have agreed to this..."

"What did he do this time? He's not still hitting you is he?"

"Celeste, he hasn't been hitting me..."

"Nia don't start lying now...you used to cover for Derek's ass all the time, trust me I can tell when you're not telling the truth." Celeste said. "When was the last time he hit you?"

"Yesterday..."

"You need to tell his ass to get the hell out...you've been letting it happen for way too long."

"I can't..."

"And why can't you? It's your apartment, he's not paying rent. If I were in your shoes, I would have been kicked his ass out." Celeste told her friend.

"I just...I can't..." Nia says.

"Nia...I will not allow you to have another Derek situation on your hands...you need to kick him out today." Celeste says. "When I get off work I'm packing my bags and I'm coming over there to stay with you...you better have kicked his ass out."

"But Celeste..."

"But nothing. He needs to go...I love you dearly, but I shouldn't be having this conversation with you...again. Tell Stephan he needs to leave, I have to go Nia, I will call when I'm on my way there. I get off at 4 today."

"Celeste..."

"I'll see you later, bye." Before Nia could react, she felt her phone being snatched from out of her hand. Nia began stressfully rubbing her temple when she realized it was Stephan and that he had been listening to her conversation.

"Really Nia..."

"What?"

"You gotta wait until I leave to talk on the phone? Keeping secrets for what Nia? For what?"

"I'm grown, and last time I checked, I pay my phone bill not you. I can talk to whoever I want when I want." Nia said getting a brief surge of boldness.

"I see you got brave..." Stephan said tightly gripping Nia's wrist. Duke started barking loudly and growling at Stephan, when he saw the man put his hands on Nia.

"Shh...Shut up!" Stephan said smacking the dog earning a bite in return. Of course upon getting bit by the dog, Stephan let go of Nia and started fighting with Duke.

"Tell your dog to get off of me!"

"You touch me, I let him have at you!" Nia said backing away from Stephan.

"Get...the hell...OFF!" Stephan said using his foot and his free hand to pry Duke off of the arm that was getting mauled.

"Kick my dog again...I'll let him bite you where it hurts..." Nia said as Duke protectively stood in front of her.

"Make a secret phone call again...I'll slap you where it hurts...don't play with me Nia, I'll slap the black off you! I'm going to the hospital...I hope that damn dog doesn't have rabies..." without another word, Stephan slams the door closed...again.

"...AND STOP SLAMMING MY DOOR!" Nia yells out as she hears the footsteps continue up the hallway.

"Good job Duke..." Nia sighs as she takes a seat on her sofa, allowing Duke to snuggle up next to her. "I'm so damn stupid...I really am."

"I wish I knew how to just listen...maybe Sebastian and I would still be friends..."
