Elaine was the first to wake up in the early morning. Checking to make sure her and Newt had all they needed for their long journey.

Once Elaine was satisfied and sure they had everything, she went up to Newts room, knocked on the door frame, since there was no door.

Newts eyes slowly opened and looked around the room until they met Elaine's

"You got up early" Newt said as he sat up in bed.
"Well, someone had to double check things and make sure we're ready to go. Plus it's going to be bit hard for me to leave this place, I've been here almost year" Elaine explained to Newt looking around the room.

Newt watched Elaine's eyes, as they slowly landed from the walls and ceilings to him.
"Well, I'll uh, I'll leave you. So you can get ready to go, I'll be at the door" Elaine said a little awkwardly after her eyes lingered a bit too long on Newt.

He gently nodded his head and gave her a smile before she left.

Elaine shook her head, and face palmed herself. I can't be falling for him can I? I mean we've only known each other for 3 weeks.

~~~
Newt changed into a pair of jeans, and army green t-shirt, with his boots he originally had. And met Elaine by the door.
He smiled at her and Elaine smiled back, then took one last look at her home before they both got in the stolen truck and drove away. Making sure to securely close the gate. Even though they'd never be back.
~~~

"We can switch if you'd like?" Newt asked Elaine as he noticed her eyes drooping.

They had been driving for hours now, none of them actually knew the exact amount.

"Sure, I'm getting tired anyway" Elaine said and pulled over to the right side of the road.

Newt hopped out of the passengers seat and rounded the front of the truck to get into the drivers side, while Elaine moved to the passengers seat by crawling over the console and situating herself in the seat.

Once Newt began to drive Elaine fell asleep, and leaned her head against the window.

Newt glanced at her sleeping figure, noticing her chest rising up and down and how she still smiled even when she would be sleeping.

~~~
Elaine was woken up by Newt who was gently shaking her. She stirred a bit before opening her blue eyes, and glanced at Newt.
"We'll have to travel by foot from here" Newt informed her as she sat up straighter. Elaine wondered why, until she looked out the car window and noticed the large narrow canyon in front of them.
Elaine nodded in response, and the both of them got out of the truck and went to the back and unlatched the tailgate, grabbing there two backpacks and a box of things they would need.
"We're gonna have to leave the box here, it's too big for only one of us to carry, and it'll slow us down" Elaine admitted taking a good look at the canyon.
"I can carry what's in it, I have room" Newt said gesturing to his light weight pack.
Elaine nodded with a smile, as Newt loaded the items into his pack, then he swung it onto his right shoulder and shut the tailgate.
Elaine checked the truck to make sure they didn't forget anything, and then they hiked into the narrow canyon.
It grew smaller and narrower the deeper you got, which seemed to be a problem.
"We're gonna have to climb, Newt" Elaine said squinting her eyes as she looked up. The sun was shining directly on them, causing them to heat up faster, and squint their eyes which had also caused them to sometimes trip.
"Yeah, that's a good idea, the further we go it looks like the smaller it gets" Newt agreed looking deeper into the canyon.
Immediately Elaine got a grip on the limestone walls about 4 inches above her and pulled herself up repeating the process as she climbed up. Newt followed soon after she got high enough, so he could be right behind her in case she falls.
"It looks like we can walk above the canyon, but it separates about 6-7 miles in" Elaine explained as she got to the top and pulled out her binoculars from her pack.
Newt got to the top with some help from Elaine. He sat down and placed his hand on his chest where his recent wound used to be.
"You ok?" Elaine asked a little bit concerned.
He gave her a thumbs up in reply, and tried to steady his breathing. The climb had taken a lot out of him.
"Here, it'll keep the sun out of your eyes" Elaine handed Newt a tan baseball cap.
"Thanks" Newt said gratefully as he put it on.
"No problem" Elaine said with a smile as she put her baby blue baseball cap on.
~~~

They walked, and walked, until the sun set, and then they camped under the stars.

A fire was lit to radiate heat and keep the two warm during the cold night.

"What was it like in the maze?" Elaine asked Newt abruptly. He looked at her, with a bit of hesitation before speaking.
"It was hard, we worked all day, everyday, and we only stopped when it rained or when Alby decided we deserved a break. Honestly I'm glad I'm out of there, and I never want to go back" Newt explained laying on the ground gazing up at the stars.
"I can imagine, it was the same for me" Elaine said her voice subtle and calm.
"Y-you were in a maze?" Newt asked surprised looking at Elaine.
"Mmhmm, group C" Elaine said nodding looking up at the stars. They were brighter, more alive and vibrant.

"What did you do?" Newt asked curiously.
"Well I was the first one in there so at first pretty much everything, then the rest of the kids that came up were boys. They never really expected to find a girl as there leader or keeper of the Med-Jacks, but after awhile it didn't seem to bother them. We were a family, one that never left anyone behind, and always there for each other no matter what. Then the last kid to come up was my best friend, my second in command. Even though she was only there for 6 months she'd proven herself, she was even a runner" Elaine's voice sadden for a moment at the mention of her beat friend, but shook it off and continued to speak "We were the first group to be pulled out, and never again will you ever hear the words 'Wicked is good' come from my mouth, not after what they did" Elaine said her voice went from a matter-of-fact tone, to a sad, hopeless again, that made Newt want to hug her and tell her she would be ok. (Mama Newt reporting for duty).
"They called their names didn't they?" Newt asked, he could tell he was right from the look on Elaine's face.

"All of them, except me. I'm the only one left from group C" Elaine said on the verge of tears, but she immediately wiped them away before they could spill.

Nothing else was said after that, only goodnights. They both slept facing the stars, and watching as the shined like a million suns. Because in reality that's what they are.

"Good night, Newt" Elaine yawned as she pulled the blanket closer to her shoulders.
"Goodnight, Elaine" Newt replied back, looking towards her and seeing her sleeping figure.
