It was midday and Newt was just about done with examining some of the boats, to see which one was in the best condition; and that turned out to be a medium sized sailboat. Suddenly Elaine called his name. It sounded urgent so he rushed to where there camp was, and saw her kneeled over a familiar body.

He sat beside her and looked to see Jess laid down with her hand over a red wet spot on her shirt. Anna came kneeling beside Jess with a first aid kit.

Hastily Elaine took a few medical supplies from the first aid kit.

"Gimme your jacket" Elaine said to Newt as she rushed to put pressure on the wound.
Newt quickly shrugged off his jacket, and handed it to Elaine who put Anna's hands on the now red gauze on Jess's wound. Elaine folded the jacket and placed it under Jess's head.

"E-Elaine..." Jess tried to say as she squinted her eyes.
"It's ok, Jess you'll be ok" Elaine assures her.
"Jess were you followed" Anna asked
Jess slowly shook her head.
"They...just left me...to die" she said wincing as Anna put more pressure on her wound.

"We need to move her" Elaine said looking at Newt. He nodded and picked Jess up, bridal style.

He carried her to a covered building he recognized as the garage from when he was previously here.

Elaine pulled out a cot from somewhere in the room. And Newt laid Jess down on it.

"Is it a bullet wound?" Anna asked. She was clearly worried, by the tone of her voice.
"By the way it looks, yes" Elaine said "and it's still in there" the three teens looked at each other.

Elaine confirmed that she'd have to get the bullet out, and Jess would have to be put under. So Anna and Newt, looked for the specific equipment Elaine would need.

After spending at least 20 minutes looking, Anna and Newt came back with surprisingly all that Elaine needed.

Elaine nodded thankfully at them and she got to work.

After Jess was fully sedated, Elaine spent 5 minutes getting the bullet out and bandaging her up. Jess had almost bled out, but Elaine was smart. And now Jess was now soundly sleeping, her wound in the healing process.

Elaine started to walk away from Newt and Anna. In the opposite direction, confused Newt tried to follow only to be stopped by Anna. She shook her head, "she takes a walks after something like this" Anna said simply "she started to do it after Lucas died, clearing her mind"
"Just let me talk to her" Newt urged
"I wouldn't advice it," Anna said as Newt started walking in the direction that Elaine went.
"Don't worry it'll be fine," Newt said as he put his hand up the air waving bye.
By the time that Newt caught up to Elaine they were a ways down on the beach where Anna couldn't see them.
Elaine knew Newt had been following her so she gained her composure, took a deep breath and turned to Newt.
"How are you doing?" Newt asked Elaine seeing her glassy eyes.
"I'm fine," Elaine responded as she turned away from him.

She seemed distant, and clearly didn't want company.

Newt stood there watching Elaine walk away, he was concerned for her. But he walked back to Anna who say near a fire, that she has just built.

"Come on" Anna gestured for Newt to sit by her "she'll come around" Anna smiled and patted Newt on his shoulder.

"She seems..."
"Distant, daunted" Anna finished for Newt.

There was a silence. A small silence.

"You know you'd think she would have forgiven herself and understand that Lucas's death wasn't her fault, but she can't" Anna said playing with a stick in the sand "she's never cried in front of anyone. I mean I've seen her cry, once..." Then there was an unbroken silence that stood firmly in the atmosphere around the fire.

Newt understood Elaine's brokenness a lot better now. And he realized that she blames herself for a death that wasn't even her fault, and it's torn her from the inside.
