Newt sat up thinking, wondering, pondering. On why he's alive, on why he was given a second chance to live. He was supposed to die, and go to a place where things are better. But he was here, and for what reason?

He wondered about how Thomas would react when he saw him, when they got to the Safehaven. Newt chuckled lightly at the thought of Thomas balling his eyes out finding out his best friend is alive.

Newt was pulled out of his thoughts by a small groan coming from the sleeping bag that was across from him.

Elaine sat up and rubbed her eyes, ridding the sleepiness out of them, and looked at Newt.
"Up already?" Elaine asked shocked. Usually she's the first one up.
"Surprised?" Newt chuckled

Then there was a comfortable silence, as Elaine looked at the rising suns.

"We should start packing up" Elaine suggested standing up and stretching her stiff muscles. Newt agreed and started to pack up his things, and Elaine followed, packing up her own belongings.

~~~
Elaine and Newt walked for hours before taking a short break.
"Who knew walking 6 miles straight would be so tiring" Elaine said propping her hands on her knees, trying to catch her breath.
Newt raised his hand and looked at Elaine with a chuckle. Elaine sat down while laughing.
"This heat is horrible" Newt said sitting down next to Elaine, taking his cap off to fan himself.
"No doubt" Elaine added coolly.
~~~

After taking a long needed break the two continued walking until they got to where the canyon separated.

Elaine looked left and right trying to find if it joins up again, but there was no luck. Newt looked down into the canyon, and realized it was about a 20 foot drop, and 7 feet wide.

"We might have to jump" Elaine said placing her hands on her hips.
"This? We won't make" Newt said with a bit of concern written in his voice.
"If we get enough speed we will" Elaine explained
"Well, I don't know if you noticed but I have a limp" Newt recalled gesturing to his leg.
"Right" Elaine mumbled. How could I forget! She thought. Elaine hastily looked for something to use as a bridge, and about 10 feet away she spotted a, what looked like to be sturdy, nine foot log.

"Here come help me with this" Elaine said and Newt followed her over to the log.
"A bridge?" Newt asked
Elaine nodded her head and bent down to get a grip on the log.

Newt followed in suit and they both carefully carried the log over to where they were originally standing. Then the pushed it out over the small canyon until it was stable on both sides.

"Let me test it out" Newt offered, and stepped in front of Elaine and began to walk the log before she even got the chance to protest.

"Careful" Elaine said concerned

With luck Newt was able to get across without the log tumbling or breaking.

"Ok your turn" Newt said.

Elaine took a deep breath before walking onto the log. Halfway to the other side, she heard a crack followed by a small loud groan.

Elaine looked at Newt, to see if he'd had heard it too, he tensed up and looked at her.

As Elaine advanced forward, the noise grew louder and she could feel the log weaken.

"Newt..." Elaine was worried, and she afraid. Afraid she might fall to her death. She was looking around in fear, and her rapid breathing was t helping the situation.

"Elaine, Elaine. Look at me" Newt said moving toward the log a bit. Elaine looked at him petrified.

"Just carefully move toward me, and don't look down" Newt said holding out his hand, even though she was a good foot or two away.
She nodded slowly, and moved just an inch, with every step.

And then suddenly the log gave in, and just before she could reach newts hand she fell.
