It was about 7 in the morning when Newt and Elaine finally found a place to rest until the sun went down. It was an old junk yard with an empty shipping container in the middle of it. There were lots of old cars and barrels that used to hold oil.

After Elaine had situated herself after Newt set her down. Elaine took a look at her left leg, and let Newt fix it up.
"Does it look better?" Elaine asked looking away, she didn't want to look even if it was better of not.
"You tell me?" Newt said, and Elaine took a peek at her leg.

It indeed looked better then before, but it was still a bare and tender wound.

"Well, it healing at least" Elaine said with a small smile.
"Slowly. Can you pass me my pack?" Newt asked Elaine, who grabbed the pack next to her and tossed it to Newt.
"Thanks" he mumbled and opened it up grabbing the first aid kit.

As Newt changed Elaine's bandaged on her leg, she decided to ask some questions about his life in the maze.
"So what did you do in the maze?" Elaine asked as casually as possible.
"A track-hoe, and second-in-command" Newt smiled weakly remembering his old friend that had died; Alby.
"Wow, second-in-command. That must've been a tough job" Elaine said shocked.
"At times it was, but it was a job I enjoyed" Newt said finishing with Elaine's bandage.

Elaine turned her leg from right to left taking a good look at the newly wrapped bandage. She was impressed at Newts bandage wrapping skills.
"Maybe you could've been a Med-Jack" Elaine admitted looking truthfully at Newt.
"No. Definitely not" Newt chuckled sitting down next to Elaine.
"Well you have some serious bandaging skills" Elaine said with a chuckle admiring her leg again.
"Thanks, I had someone to teach me" Newt smiled.
"Like a girlfriend or-" Elaine trailed off. Why? Elaine, why that? Why not 'like close friend or?' Not girlfriend! Way to embarrass yourself! Elaine had thought in her head, regretfully.
"No, I-uh I was never with anyone" Newt said quickly. He'd never really thought of having a girlfriend, just you know girl friends with a space in the middle. But now that Elaine mentioned if he'd ever had one, he started to ask himself if he ever did before the maze.

For some reason Elaine felt happy at the sound of Newt being single for most of his life in and out the maze. Why am I feeling like this? She asked herself trying her best not to smile.

"What about you? Have you ever had a boyfriend?" Newt asked this time.
"No, I mean I had a lot of guys in the maze try and hit on me, and you know flirt. But no" Elaine replied back with a calm voice and smile.
"Good..." Newt muttered lowly. It was clear he really liked Elaine, and possibly loved her.
"What was that?" Elaine asked not hearing what he had said.
"Oh nothing, how bout we eat something" Newt offered
"Yeah, I'm starving" Elaine said licking her dry lips.

Newt only smiled, while pulling out the M.R.E's from Elaine's pack.

The suns heat was brutal according to Elaine who had taken off her long sleeve shirt exposing her black tank top.

"My gosh, it's hot" Elaine said fanning herself with her hand. Which didn't help much.
"I know, you've told me that for the past 3 hours" Newt retorted slipping off his long sleeve shirt, his arm muscles flexing in the process. Elaine couldn't help the blood rush up to her cheeks as he did this. She was never the type of girl to fawn over guys with muscles, but something about Newt was just different.

"Like what you see?" Newt asked eyeing Elaine.
"Pshh, no. I was looking at that" Elaine lied pointing to a art mural on the metal wall behind Newt, who sat across from her.

The mural was a peacock with flowing feathers like a river that encircled itself, but it was faded so the green, blue, and white spray paint was casually fading.
"A peacock? You were staring intentionally at a mural of a peacock?" Newt cocked an eyebrow.
"Y-yeah, obviously. Peacocks are beautiful, and graceful creatures" Elaine said trying to hide the awkwardness.
"They also attack people" Newt retorted in a matter-of-fact tone.
"Yeah, when someone tries to attack them" Elaine argued.
"Well have you met one?" Newt asked cocking an eyebrow again.
"N-no, but I've seen pictures, a-and stuff" Elaine said mumbling the word stuff.
"That doesn't count" Newt said picking up a strand of straw that laid loosely around the shipping container, and played with it between his fingers.
"Yes it does. Have you ever seen one?" This time Elaine cocked an eyebrow.
"No but-"
"Then how do you know peacocks attack people?" Elaine asked sassily.
"And how do you know it's only when people attack them?" Newt said and looked at her expecting an answer but only got complete and utter silence.
"Slinthead" Elaine mumbled

Soon they both fell asleep laying against their packs on the floor of the shipping container. Unaware of the brutal sandstorm headed there way.
