. Friday.
I don't know when Leo got home, or how he got home but he is sitting in front of a plate of pancakes and yoghurt. I made sure to pick my mouth back up before my parents would notice enough to ask me what was wrong.
"Reo? Come sit and have cereal." Mom said.
I feel so stupid for over thinking the good-night situation but each time I sit and take a spoon of the cereal, I just have to look back at the pancake Leo left untouched.
"So, Leo." Mon starts and I know it won't end good for me. "Your dad and I have been thinking and we decided to get you this."
Out if nowhere, my dad pops up with a wrapped box in his hands and a huge smile on his face so early in the morning. If a stranger walks in, they would just think I'm the maid with the extreme privilege of going to a private school envying the only child eating a much more better food than I am.
"What is it?" Leo asks.
He didn't look up from his phone all along, only taking a spoon of the yoghurt and swirling his tongue around the spoon.
"Open it and find out." Leo sighs but he drops his phone. He didn't waste time playing with the box, he just aggressively tore it open, diving straight for the gift in it: a new Mac book.
"Well, what do you think? Since your admission into Harvard is so certain, you need a new MacBook."
I blink once to make sure I'm not in my frequenting nightmare. Then I pinch myself slightly to persuade my brain from crying. It didn't work at all, it didn't help me forget about the look of boredom on Leo's face.
"Thanks but I don't want it." Leo looks back at his phone, a smile stretching his lips. "My MacBook's still fine."
"Oh, we know but it's for Harvard. We wanted to get you a new iPhone, maybe an apartment instead of a dorm, just to help you settle in better you know." Dad answered, his smile faltering slightly.
"Thanks dad, thanks mom but seriously, I don't need it." Leo replies but with a smile on his face. "Maybe you should give it to Reo? She doesn't have a MacBook and it really helps better than the old desktop."
Mom looks shocked Leo refused again. "Reo might not even know how to use a MacBook sweetie, but it's fine. We'll just give it to your cousin."
"No mom, Reo needs it more. The physics quiz we had would have been easier if her notes were on the MacBook, she needs it." Leo looks at me briefly and like a switch, my parents realize I'm sitting there too. "Can we go to school already?"
"Yes, son. Let's go, hurry up Reo." Dad said, anger dripping in each word he said.
"What was that all about?" I heard mom whisper to Dad.
"I don't know, but you watch that daughter of yours, if she's screwing up Leo's mind I won't hesitate not paying her college fees." .
