"...ake up, please..." Was I still alive even after that hit? I didn't want to be alive anymore.
"L..." The sound of footsteps got louder and harder, someone to touching my palm, there was a cold metal touching my chest. What exactly was going on?
"... Fine, yes..." I opened my eyes, waiting to see the white clouds or sky of the clouds but I was in a hospital.
Did they also survive the hit to the truck?
"Reo? You're going to be okay." It was Leo. He looked happier. His brown curls were longer in the middle, and his eyes looked happier. There weren't any dark circles anymore, his frown was replaced with a halfsmile and there was a skinny boy behind him.
"Who... Is... That?" I pointed at the kid with a buzz cut haircut and piercings on his face.
"That's Tommy. He's my friend. Do you need water?" I didn't want any water.
"Dad...?"
"They didn't survive it." I closed m eyes in relief, at least they didn't survive it. I didn't want to see Leo anymore, his happiness irritated me, his smile annoyed me to great lengths and the skinny kid behind him had the audacity to look shy.
"Water." I pointed. Leo walked to the other side of the private hospital, even his walk was different, he looked too different to be my brother. It was just a few days, how much could have made him happier.
The water was warm but I wanted something cold, to maybe freeze my brain and clear me from seeing Leo again.
"What are you doing here?" I asked.
"What? What do you mean? I'm your brother."
"Leave." I almost died for someone who was happy to be alive. He might even have a partner to go home to, he didn't have to cut his hair and change his clothes to satisfy two people. Sure he had bee doing it all his life, but when he could have pulled through, and choose not to come for the holidays, he left. He left me.
"You've left me behind before, why is it different now." My head was hurting. I could feel something hot rush to my ears, everything in me hurt.
"No, I did this all for you." I closed my eyes.
Why did everything in me hurt? Why was it burning inside? Why did I want to cry? I was doing this all for Leo, but I didn't expect him to look so happy while I suffered what it was to be in his shoes for three days.
But that was what I've always wanted: to be in the spotlight of my parent's affection, and now that I got it, I didn't want it anymore.
I killed my parents. I swerved the wheel to the truck. I caused the accident. I'm a murderer for crying out loud.
"I killed them." I blurted out randomly.
"It's fine, they were bad people-"
"They are my parents." I corrected.
"We were adopted Reo, they aren't really out parents." I thought being the one with the smartest IQ would mean to know when and when not to spill bad news to a person in the hospital.
It was hotter and hotter.
It was getting hard to open my eyes.
So all along, while I stayed in the shadows.
While I wanted to be noticed.
It was all a lie.
I didn't fight the urge to keep my eyes shut, what was the point anyway? At the end of the day Leo was alive to take over the property, and Reo, me, well I still had myself. I still remained in the shadows.
