Making friends is easy, keeping them is the hard part. Clary Fray turned this statement over and over in her head as she looked at her boyfriend, Jace Herondale. Realizing he was still speaking to her she snapped her head in attention.

"Vasilisa is what?!" She exclaimed now feeling the weight of what he said.

"Queen. Of the Moroi" Jace said flatly- this was most likely the third time he'd said that.

"But... How?" Vasilisa or Lissa (could Clary even call her that anymore?) was a Moroi friend Clary had the chance of meeting on a cruise ship last winter. She had the air of a royal, but wielded the kindest heart out of anyone Clary had the pleasure of knowing. At the time she was the last heir to the Dragomir line (one of the Moroi royal families). Besides the fact that she was a little young it filled Clary with excitement and contempt that she would be making those reforms her friends had discussed that slightly controversial night. Her feelings aside, she still wanted to know how such an event could happen.

The Moroi were an ancient race of mortal vampires who were known to possess magical abilities. They were also a society more cut off from that of humans than Clary's own race. Like the immortal vampires or the Strigoi they referred to them as, Moroi drank blood as their main source of food and preferred the moonlight verses the sunshine (though unlike the Strigoi they could walk under the sun with out incinerating themselves). But to say that the races were indistinguishable would be an almost offensive statement. Moroi were born not made, meaning that Strigoi killed or were bitten to achieve the immortality and the heightened senses. Also each Moroi possessed a control of one of the five elements, earth, fire, water, air, and newly rediscovered spirit. Having the power of spirit was another thing that made Lissa special. Spirit represented psychic abilities like compulsion, healing, and bringing back the dead.

Jace rolled his eyes. "How many times do I have to explain this to you, I don't know the details! All I know is that it was a mistake and-"

"Mistake?! How can running for queen be a mistake?!"

"There are a lot of rumors going around that it had to do with another friend of ours... Can you guess who that is?"

Now Clary was the one that sighed. "Rose Hathaway?"

"Rose Hathaway." Lissa's guardian. Clary also had the pleasure of meeting someone who was as reckless and strong willed as Lissa was kind. Not that Clary wasn't strong willed herself, but Rose took the cake. Surprisingly it was one of the things that made her such a good guardian. She knew what was important in life and it drove her like an ox. Plus it made her pretty kickass.

When Clary had met her she already wore two molnija marks, marks that indicated how many Strigoi she killed. Strigoi were what guardians protected royal Moroi from. Unlike the Shadowhunter world, Moroi and guardians or dhampirs (what Rose was, the spawn of humans-or other dhampirs- and Moroi) believed that all Strigoi were evil and were out to kill Moroi, especially royals. Now they weren't completely wrong in their beliefs. The vampires that went after Moroi were what the shadowhunters considered as rogue vampires and were usually Moroi turned vampires and vampires gone bad. What the dhampirs and Moroi didn't understand was that most vampires were bitten and only drank the amount of blood that they did, but due to the rarity of a guardian or a Moroi coming across a law abiding vampire both races remained intact.

Because of that negligence, the new age shadowhunters like Jace and herself who believed in the well treatment of all Downworlders did not exactly see eye to eye with the other society. That was the primary issue when Clary and her friends had first come across the Princess, her boyfriend, and their guardians. By the end of the trip they had become friends but they didn't start as such.

"Well that makes sense... Is that all you had to tell me because I love you, Jace, but you're interrupting my sleep!"

"Hmmph as if I'd interrupt your beauty sleep for something important! Of course this has to do with us!"

"And here I thought you were being an excited friend..." Clary rolled her eyes and almost accidentally shut them in the process. She wished he'd been smart enough to hull her to the kitchen. At least she would be near the coffeepot. But no he had climbed through her window in the middle of the night.

"Of course! I am excited and a friend." Jace said in a matter of fact way. "But do you want know really why I am excited?"

"Why are you so excited, Jace?" It took everything Clary had not enforce sarcasm on that one.

"Because we- meaning you, Alec, Izzy, Simon, Magnus, and I- have a date with said Queen."

Clary frowned. "Why?"

"The Clave chose us to show our respects on behalf of the Nephilim."

"Um since when are we diplomats?"

"Ever since we became the only shadowhunters with the slightest relationship with Vasilisa. They think that we'll loosen the tension."

"How do they know about the cruise?"

"I don't know, but it doesn't seem like something that would be out of the Clave's knowledge..." Jace sat up from Clary's bed. "Technicalities aside we just got an all expense paid trip to Court!"

"I still don't understand what the big deal is... How can you be so excited about playing Council member?"

"It's Court, Clary! Do you know how rich those royals are? We'll be living like kings!" Jace said with a dreamy expression on his face.

"I knew there was something for you in this! Anyways I highly doubt I'll be able to go on this vacation so have fun," she said laying back on the bed so she could catch up on the sleep Jace had deprived her of.

Now Jace was the one with the questions. "Why do you say that?"

"Do you actually think my mother is going to let her precious daughter make friends with Moroi?" Clary almost laughed at this. Her mother was notorious for her motherly quips.

"Oh," Jace chuckled at this,"you must really not want to go if you seriously think she is an issue."

"So my mother doesn't scare you anymore?"

"Oh she still scares me, enough to make me have nightmares about her walking in on us doing it and sending me to the pits of Hell herself. But dear Clary, my love for you is stronger than that."

"Okay I'll don't mind going then as long as if and when my mother sees through the bullshit coverup you made I get to blame it all on you."

"Fair enough. Now let's go before she wakes up..."

"We're leaving today?!"

"Of course! Get dressed- the others are already there. Why else would I wake you up in the middle of the night?"

Clary sighed sitting back up. "And here I thought you just were trying to make my life a living hell..."

"Making your life a living hell is my job." Jace planted a kiss on her forehead, "Get dressed and pack. I'll wait outside."
