-1- A normal day

POV Zhan

For 28-year-old Xiao Zhan, his working day begins in a few minutes. For him, this means he got up at 6 a.m., took a shower, got dressed and had a small breakfast. Then he rode his bicycle the 5 miles to his workplace, the Gusu Lan elderly care home.

But it is not only a care home for the elderly, but much more. Because there are also residential homes there for disabled people, the latter are also placed in the elderly care home, which is why the work for Xiao Zhan is not just a routine job. Only rarely does one day resemble another, but that is exactly what he likes best about it.

In his field of work, Xiao Zhan belongs to the working group that is at the lowest level of the hierarchy. But he doesn't see it that way himself. He knows that the work of the social workers, as he is, is also very important for the residents.

But Zhan had actually chosen a completely different profession. He wanted to work as an editor in a book publishing house. And after graduating from university, he was able to enter the profession of his choice. Unfortunately, however, the publishing house had to close only two years later and Zhan was suddenly unemployed.

He had applied to several other publishers, but none gave him a job. So he thought about what he could do instead. And coincidence was the key to his success. He had just been jogging in the park when an old man was walking confusedly through the park looking for his daughter. The old man, who had Alzheimer's, was looking for his 3-year-old child. Well, at least he kept his daughter for three years, because he didn't realize that she was grown up long ago because of the Alzheimer's.

Nobody was interested in the old man, some even laughed at him, because he was walking around with only one shoe, a wrongly buttoned shirt and a jacket turned inside out. Zhan, however, was not like that; he walked up to the man, talked to him and accompanied him through the park while he called his care home. Fortunately, the phone number was written on a sewn-in piece of tape in his jacket.

When two employees from the care home arrived, they told him that the man could only leave unseen because they lacked workers. In this case, social workers who look after the residents while the nursing staff did their jobs.

Zhan just couldn't stop thinking about the incident and so he talked to his parents and his older sister about the incident and his sister told him, "Why don't you retrain as a social worker?" Zhan thought about it, gathered information about it and then decided to retrain as a social worker.

It took him two years to retrain, but finally he was able to get started and was even lucky enough to find an employment at Gusu Lan. Not only that he can work there as a social worker in every area, they also pay well. So Zhan was more than happy. And since two years now he works there from Monday to Friday from 8 am to 4 pm.

Even if no day is the same, some things are always the same. Zhan enters his area, group 2, shortly before 8 am, goes into the changing room, puts on his work clothes, white pants and a sky blue shirt, as well as white sports shoes. Then he goes into the kitchen, opens the box that is already standing ready and comes from the canteen kitchen, takes out the bread, rolls, sausage, cheese, jam, butter, yoghurts or pudding and begins lovingly preparing breakfast for the residents, who are gradually washed and dressed by the nursing staff.

At the same time the coffee machine is running and he makes tea. As soon as he is finished with these preparations, he already is sweating through for the first time that day and then goes to help the nursing staff. But only after he has visited the two residents in their room, wishing them a good morning, who cannot leave their beds. Together with Tao he sings the Sleeping Beauty song and tells Gia about the latest gossip from the celebrities.
