POV Yibo

When Yibo came home after his first day of work as a manager in the new area, he sat in his room for an hour and wondered what he had done wrong to make the social worker so angry with him? He just wanted to get to know him better. How did it go so wrong?

Yes, he admitted that he had been a bit clumsy in the morning and actually he hadn't wanted to deny Xiao Zhan and that Zoey Meng their breakfast break either. In his previous area it had only been that the social workers did not have a breakfast break and instead they had a longer lunch break. Actually, he had wanted to explain this to Xiao Zhan, but before he got there, Xiao Zhan had packed his breakfast, and left the room. And as so often, he had simply expressed himself wrongly, and had not meant it as an attack or criticism at all.

And why did Xiao Zhan take over the work of the caretakers anyway? Yibo had quickly noticed that the caretakers were completely relying on Xiao Zhan's help and therefore did not bother at all to get the residents ready in time for breakfast. And just because Gusu Lan's motto is not to approach care with time pressure, it does not mean that the caregivers can waste their time with drinking coffee and smoking cigarettes in the garden area, like they do there.

It annoyed Yibo to see that Xiao Zhan has to make breakfast for the residents, although this is not part of his duties. During this time he could have turned his attention to the residents who had to lie in bed and could have concentrated on them. But instead he rushed off to prepare breakfast. Only to then help with the care of the other residents.

Colleagues say about Xiao Zhan that he is the sunshine among the employees, he would spread light, warmth and joy as soon as he just smiled. But then why do his colleagues take advantage of him? Why are they letting Xiao Zhan do their job? And why did it make Yibo so angry?

When he saw Xiao Zhan sitting in this small stuffy room after the lunch, filling out all the forms, he felt sorry for the social worker. He looked tired and had deep eye rims. He waited until Xiao Zhan had finished filling out the forms and thought he would take his break then. But instead he did the next job.

He wanted Xiao Zhan to finally take a break, but when he told that to the social worker, he took it as an attack. Like everything else Yibo did and said today. He only meant well and just wanted to observe how his colleagues treat each other, who does what and from time to time he asked a question about it to better understand why the employee is doing it.

The moment Xiao Zhan scolded him and was so angry with him, Yibo felt helpless. He wanted to explain it to the social worker, but he had no idea how to do it. And every further attempt to explain it to Xiao Zhan, made him even more angry.

Yibo was happy when his family finally came home. He immediately told them about his day and especially about Xiao Zhan and how angry Xiao Zhan became at him.

"Did you at least try to smile? Or asked him in a nice way?" His father wanted to know.

"I'm not doing this, Dad." Yibo replied.

"I'm surprised you haven't heard from Xiao Zhan. He is very popular everywhere in Gusu Lan. The colleagues and residents rave about him and his cheerful and kind nature. And you can't treat someone like him like you treat everyone else. He loves his work as much as you do, and I'm sure he thinks now that you've criticized him constantly." His mother explained it to him.

"And what should I do now? He's really mad at me."

"Apologize to him and explain that it was not your intention to criticize him in any way or deny him his break." Said his father.

"But I'm angry with him too. Why does he let his colleagues take advantage of him like that? They sit lazily outside in the garden area, drinking coffee and smoking one after the other, while he works hard inside and does their jobs".

"Why is this Xiao Zhan so important to you? I mean, you spent half an hour just telling us about him and his work, and we don't even know what your new responsibilities are yet." Said Yibo's big brother.

"Whatever new things I have to do now, that's completely irrelevant. I just want to know how to deal with Xiao Zhan now?"

"Dad already told you that. Apologize and explain it to him. And preferably in private, not in front of all those colleagues." Explained to his mother.

Yibo firmly decided to speak with Xiao Zhan the very next morning. He would wait for him, invite him into his office and then calmly explain to him why he was asking so many questions. After he apologizes, of course.

He didn't even know exactly why it was so important to him what Xiao Zhan thought about him. Maybe, he thought, he could learn something from Xiao Zhan. For example, how to appear more cheerful and therefore more friendly? Or did he just want this cheerful social worker to be something like a friend for him? Someone he can talk to at work, now that he's not working alongside his family.

Even in the evening Yibo was still brooding and simply could not find an explanation for himself. His mother sat next to him on the balcony and asked, "Is it possible that you like Xiao Zhan and got so angry because of it?"

"What are you talking about? I don't know him and I certainly don't like him, at least not in the way you might think."

"Yibo, you should definitely consider this. You told me yourself you like men. But you'd only been in love once, and that was in high school."

"Mom, let's please not talk about that."

"Why not? Because it was never anything between you and that boy?"

"Nothing was? He told me he liked me, and when it came out, he claimed everywhere that I had confessed my feelings to him and he rejected me but I just wouldn't accept it. It took weeks for the truth to come out and for the other students to leave me alone again."

"I know my darling. But since that bad experience, you haven't let anyone near you."

"Yeah, because I wasn't interested in any guys."

"Maybe that's just changing. I'm not saying you should try to get close to Xiao Zhan right away. Just consider the possibility that you might like him." She kissed Yibo on the forehead and went back inside.

Was Yibo really into Xiao Zhan? No, he thought that was completely out of the question. As a manager, he is simply concerned about his employee and simply does not want him to be taken advantage of because he is good-natured.

When Yibo was back in his room, he sat on his bed and thought of what Zoey Meng told him about Xiao Zhan. She said that she had had a hard time at the beginning to talk or make friends with her colleagues, she was mostly quiet and rarely dared to say anything. But then Xiao Zhan took her by the hand and bit by bit he pulled her out of her shyness with his cheerful manner. She is grateful to him.

And the other colleagues also raved about Xiao Zhan. He is always cheerful, spreads joy and is an inspiration for his colleagues. And exactly this inspiration had Yibo so angered today, that Xiao Zhan's smile had disappeared and instead, he looked angry and frustrated. Yibo admitted to himself that he finds Xiao Zhan's smile very beautiful and that it hurt him when he stopped smiling.

That's exactly why he's planning to make peace with Xiao Zhan. So that he not only looks at all his colleagues and the residents, but also at him with a smile that warms the hearts.
