-6- The Analysis

POV Zhan

The analysis of the two weeks that Wang Yibo observed his employees had hit like a bomb. Every unit had received full stress. At the beginning everyone was still happy when it was said that everyone should come to the living area of group two for a duty consultation. Wang Yibo had already prepared everything, made coffee and even bought cake for the first meeting and arranged it nicely on plates. But then, when everyone was there and just about to eat the cake, their appetite vanished.

He began to say, "I think all of you should take another introductory course that explains what tasks fall within your area of expertise. Or use the Internet and look for it. It can't be that there are a few professional caregivers here, who keep disappearing and being untraceable because they are outside smoking, drinking coffee and gossiping. It can't be a care assistant standing on a ladder trying to change a light bulb, or the social worker taking care of the residents."

Zhan froze and turned his eyes to a piece of paper lying in front of Wang Yibo. On this sheet was his name and there was a long text.

"I don't want to say that everyone is like that. There are really great carers here that I could see that they love their work. They also take great care of the trainees. They guide them really well and explain everything right." Explained Wang Yibo

Inwardly, Zhan was already trying to prepare himself for what his new superior would find against him. Even though he and Wang Yibo didn't fight anymore in the last two weeks and even spent every day of their lunch break together, they never talked much, though, and for Zhan it was still hard to understand his supervisor.

On the one hand he seems very strict and takes a hard line when something doesn't suit him. And he is also not afraid to raise his voice. On the other hand, he came to the small room to Zhan every day at lunchtime and brought him something for lunch.

When Wang Yibo had finished naming the caregivers he had a lot of complaints about, for example the many smoking breaks, he went ahead with the caregiving assistants. "Just like the caretakers, we have some real gems among the care assistants and I can't complain much. But, unfortunately, you forget, just like the professional caregivers, that you are also responsible for catering for the residents. Making tea, coffee, preparing breakfast, lunch, that's it. It's all part of your job."

The more Wang Yibo explained, the more aware Zhan became of what he would hear. Actually, he wanted to get up and leave instead of listening to the criticism. Zoey Meng looked at him and was pale in the face. Zhan smiled at her, but suspected that his attempt to encourage her had failed because he himself must have looked very worried.

"Now we come to our two social workers. I know this might sound mean when I say it, but please confine yourself to your work. It is not your job to make breakfast, care the residents, give them lunch or calm them down when they freak out. If you want to do this work, get an education and learn how to do it properly. I know you try very hard and like to do it, but you are only social workers. Take care of only what you have been trained for. What will happen if you make a mistake in your care? Everything can happen, including the death of a resident. What insurance company do you think would pay for you if you make a mistake, because you have taken on tasks for which you are neither trained nor paid? I don't want to see you catering or caring the residents in the future. If you do, we will have to let you go."

Zoey Meng jumped up and frowned at Wang Yibo "Oh yeah? And if we don't do it, who will? When will the residents be able to eat breakfast? When will they have lunch?"

"As I explained earlier, this is the duty of the caretakers. And I will check whether they are doing their duties or not. You, in any case, will not be doing it anymore." Wang Yibo replied sharply.

"And what shall we do in the meantime? Sit and wait and twiddle our thumbs until the caretakers finish, and the residents finish eating?" Zhan asked angrily.

"Xiao Zhan, you must have learned in your training what you can do. How about preparing for crafts, painting, playing games, memory training, anything. Do you think I didn't notice that you prepare a lot of things at home and then bring them with you to speed things up? You're the worst one here at cross-disciplinary work. And I've often missed the words when I see how naturally you've taken the caretakers' work off or even from them. So it's no wonder they're like that. They rely on you completely. And while you're sweating, they sit quietly outside, smoking one after another. So if you want to continue working here, limit yourself to what you can do and what you've learned." Wang Yibo replied in a serious tone.

"Don't you think you're going a little too far in attacking Xiao Zhan like this? He started complaining from the beginning that some carers were not doing their job, but he was only smiled at and nothing was done about it. They practically forced him to what you call "cross-disciplinary." Jia, one of the senior caregivers, explained.

"Then he should have gone to someone else instead of just doing this work. I see how much he enjoys doing that for the residents. But for insurance purposes alone, I have to stop it." Wang Yibo replied.

Zhan said nothing more, he felt humiliated and hurt. Especially because Wang Yibo had criticized him like that in front of all his colleagues. And even worse, he considered that he practically portrayed Zhan as the guilty one, and that because of him, the others became lazy. And yet, these lazy ones had already been like that when he had just started working here.

Wang Yibo explained that he plans to change some of the procedures and thus to improve them. Furthermore, he would like to give teachings to everyone again, about occupational safety and hygienic issues, as well as explain what belongs to the respective field and what does not.

After the duty consultation, Zhan went outside with the residents in the garden, playing with a ball and singing songs. But Zhan neither enjoyed it nor could he concentrate on the residents.

When Wang Yibo came out and said, "Xiao Zhan, about before, I didn't mean anything bad to you." Would Zhan just get angry and would shout at his supervisor. But instead, he chose another method, he kept quiet.

"Don't be angry. I just wanted to make it clear that I'm worried something might happen and then you get in trouble. Talk to me."

Zhan shook his head and decided never to speak to Wang Yibo again unless it was absolutely necessary. And he would certainly never have lunch with him again. He didn't care what his reasons were. He could have told this to Zhan in private and not in front of all the others.

When Zhan finally got off at 4 pm, he went to change his clothes and still the words of Wang Yibo echoed in his head. He tried hard not to let it show how much it hurt him. But when he left the changing room, his tears ran down his face and just then, of all people, he already had to run into Wang Yibo again. Stubborn and without lifting his head or saying goodbye, Zhan walked towards and away from Wang Yibo. He walked to his bike, where his supervisor followed him. But Zhan was fast enough to get away before Wang Yibo reached him.
