-16- The stolen stuff

Zhan stood in the middle of a resident's room and did not know how to react. Should he laugh or cry about the fact that the thief didn't even stop at the resident's wheelchair? How could someone steal a wheelchair and nobody noticed anything?

With large quick steps, Zhan went to Yibo's office and told him about the latest theft. Yibo stared stunned at Zhan and made Zhan repeat what he said. "I said, Mrs. Rena's wheelchair has been stolen!"

"You're kidding, right?"

"Do I look like I'm kidding? I wanted to take Mrs. Rena out for a walk. When I went to get the wheelchair, it wasn't there. I immediately went to check the other rooms, then back to Mrs. Rena's room. The wheelchair is missing!"

Yibo told Zhan to come into the office and close the door. Then he first called the director for permission to watch the video recordings. And together they watched the footage. But, they didn't come to a conclusion.

Because on the video they saw Mrs. Rena driving down the corridor in her wheelchair and coming back on foot an hour later. They couldn't see where she left her wheelchair. So together they went from room to room again and searched for the wheelchair, but did not find it. And Mrs. Rena, because of her dementia, won't remember where she left it.

Zhan was standing next to Yibo when he once again had to call a resident's family to report the theft. Especially since Mrs. Rena's wheelchair was not rented, but bought by the family. And while Yibo was talking to the resident's daughter-in-law, Zhan took a closer look at the duty rosters of the past weeks. However, he didn't notice anything special and except for him, Yibo and Zoey, everyone else is working in different shifts.

After Yibo's phone call, Zhan went back to his group. He had made several wooden flowers with the residents in the last two weeks. All they had to do now was paint the wooden flowers. But because he needed weatherproof paint, Zhan had to go to the basement. When he reached the basement, he found not only the weatherproof paint, but also the thief's hiding place.

Immediately Zhan called Yibo with his cell phone, who also came to the basement just a moment later and looked horrified at all the stolen things, including Mrs. Rena's wheelchair. Yibo informed the home management and they called the police. Since every theft was reported properly, they had to wait for the arrival of the officers before they could approach the stolen items.

After fifteen minutes, four officers arrived and wrote everything down and took pictures. Fortunately, Zhan and Yibo were then allowed to take the stolen items back and had two colleagues take them upstairs while they gave their statement.

"Thank God we have a camera here." Said the director of the home, who also came in.

"What? Where?" Yibo asked her in surprise. And she pointed to the elevator.

"The elevator has cameras on both floors, inside and outside. In case a resident gets injured or has other problems, everything is recorded. That means all we have to do is look at the footage and we'll finally know who stole the stuff." She explained calmly. She then immediately went with two officers to the administration building and to her office where they watched the recordings.

And while Zhan and Yibo waited eagerly to find out who the thief was, they continued their work. Yibo in his office, where he called the family members of the residents to inform them that the stolen items had reappeared. And Zhan painted the wooden flowers with the residents.

When lunch arrived at 11:30 am, there was still no news about the thief. But Zhan and Yibo didn't have to wait for an answer either. As soon as the two colleagues had brought all the stolen stuff upstairs, one person disappeared without a trace. Zoey Meng!

Since neither Zhan nor Yibo believed that the thief had stolen Zoey Meng as well, it was obvious that only she was the culprit. She had started her duty as usual this morning and then disappeared quietly and secretly when all the stolen items were found in the basement. She can't be reached on her mobile phone either. Of course they reported it immediately.

Shortly before Zhan and Yibo's lunch break, the director of the home finally called and explained that they had looked at the video footage and now have evidence that Zoey Meng is the culprit and that she committed all these thefts. 

Unfortunately, Zhan and Yibo had to find out that Zoey Meng didn't leave without leaving a farewell greeting to the two. She slashed all four tyres on Zhan's car and kicked a dent in the passenger door. And once again, the police had to come along first, to take the report and then the breakdown service had to come along, to make Zhan's car fit to drive again.

The nice man from the breakdown service, had even taken his time to look for further damage. He even checked the fuel tank. Since Zhan's car is an older model, the fuel cap is easily accessible and the lock is easy to pick. Luckily for them, everything was in order.

When they finished work, they went straight to Yibo's family. The three had a day off and invited Zhan and Yibo to their home. As soon as they arrived there, they told them the news and also what farewell gift Zoey Meng had left them. "Luckily, the breakdown service came right away and the man even checked the car thoroughly on his own when we told him, that a colleague did it to take revenge on us." Yibo explained.

"Take good care of you guys. Both of you. Understand?" Yibo's father replied worried.

"Yes of course. We will be careful." Said Zhan and Yibo nodded.

"With this woman, you must be prepared for anything. Does she know where you live?" Yibo's mother asked.

"No, I never gave her the address and she can't get the employee records. Only the supervisor can." Zhan explained.

"So I." Yibo proudly replied.

"Yes Yibo, you and only you. We are all loyal to you, our lord and master." Zhan said sarcastically. Zhan knows how proud Yibo is of what he has achieved so far, and sometimes when Yibo almost bursts with pride, Zhan teases him a little.

Yibo laughed and almost choked on a piece of cake. "ZhanZhan, you are naughty to me again."

"Yes. But I'm off duty, so I'm allowed." Zhan said with a grin.

"All right. But only you can do it." Returned Yibo and kissed Zhan on the cheek.

"Oh, when I see you two together, I can hardly wait for your wedding. I'm sure you'll both look great in your wedding suits." Said Yibo's mother, looking at them lovingly.

They stayed at home with Yibo's family until after dinner. They talked about work and the upcoming wedding and how much they were looking forward to the wedding in Canada. Originally they had planned to get married in the USA, but they decided against it when they heard how expensive it is. Now they are getting married in Canada at half price and in an even more beautiful location.

Back home, they sat down on the balcony with a hot cup of tea and talked about Zoey Meng again. Zhan explained that he really liked her as a colleague and never thought she would be like that. "Well, who knows what's going on inside her. Maybe it was already inside her and your rejection was the trigger that was missing."

"Mm. Maybe you're right. I still think it's a shame. And now her position has to be filled quickly. I'm really curious who the personnel department will send us." Zhan said.

After such an eventful day, the two let the evening pass in peace, before they went to bed tired and fell asleep almost immediately.
