-18- Decision
Even after three days, Zhan still didn't know what to choose. He would have preferred someone who told him what to do. But there was not such a person and Yibo always just told him that he would respect whatever Zhan would decide.
So he asked his parents and his sister for advice and they told him to try an internship at the publishing house and see if he could then decide. So Zhan called the publisher and asked if they would allow him to make a decision with an internship. And they agreed. So Zhan started a two-week internship there.
And from the very first day he entered the building and saw all the busy staff, the many offices, actually the whole atmosphere, he was completely in his world. The world that he had always wanted to be in.
A co-worker took him to an office that could become his. He was handed books that he should check as an editor. Books that had just been sent in by authors. His heart was already beating faster when he only held these first two first versions in his hands.
At first he was afraid that he had forgotten something in the past years. But as soon as he had started his work, it went like magic. He still had everything in him, he was still the editor from before and when he started his work it was as if a soft melody was playing in him. Inside him a piano played to a pan flute, which was accompanied by a violin. It was just like when he stood in a publishing house for the first time and watched the editors at work. And also the tingling in his stomach was there again.
How could he have forgotten how he heard this melody in himself for the first time? Besides his work as an editor, there was only one more thing that made him hear that inner melody and gave him that tingle. His love for Yibo. And suddenly the decision wasn't as hard as he thought.
When he came home after his first day of work as an intern, he was beaming all over his face and Yibo took him in his arms. "Well, I guess you had a good day?" Yibo asked. And Zhan excitedly told him about his day.
"Everything was exactly how I imagined it would be and even better. I have my own office with a great view. I checked two books today and the smell of freshly printed books was everywhere. Everyone in the building seemed so busy. Everyone greeted me friendly and there is even a lesbian couple there that is accepted by everyone. I told them about you during the break and they said they would like to meet you. The CEO is the same age as me and he is really nice. He showed me around. Imagine, they even have a relaxation room for the employees and a gym. There is a huge lounge where the employees can sit together and talk. There's always fresh coffee, salads, sandwiches, fruit and vegetables in the kitchen."
"That sounds very exciting and nice ZhanZhan. So who wouldn't want to work in an environment like that?"
"Well, they don't have one important thing."
"Well, what is it?"
"They don't have Wang Yibo. I've missed you so much."
"Ha ha, you are sweet. I really missed you at work today, too."
"Did the residents ask about me?"
"Yes, they did. But Tony kept them all busy so the residents didn't mind. Some of them asked me to send you their best wishes and hope you enjoy your internship."
"Oh how sweet of them. I must honestly say, though, I missed the work less than I thought I would. The only one I missed was you."
"Well, ZhanZhan, it's exactly the work you always wanted to do."
"Yes, it is, and I didn't even realize how much I missed working in a publishing house."
"So that means you've already made a decision?"
"I don't know. I admit the decision is easier to make after today. But I don't want to rush into it. I'll do the two weeks of internship to make sure I know what I really want. I don't want to regret my decision later."
"ZhanZhan, you just said the decision is easier for you. That means you don't have to think about it much longer. Deep down, you've already decided. Because that' s what you always wanted. I understand when you say you want to wait and see. But I don't think you really need to think about it anymore. Take this job and do what you've always wanted to do."
"And what about the residents?"
"They will still be well taken care of. Don't worry about that. I'm there to make sure they're all well. And I'll tell you about them every day. And I'll tell the residents what you do. And you can come and visit them anytime you want."
"So you're saying I should take the job?"
" Sweetie, I've never seen you happier than today when you came home from work. Yeah, okay, with me, but not about work. I'm sure you love this job and you enjoyed it. But you're an editor and never wanted to be anything else. Take this chance and do what you want."
"But then we can't work together anymore. We won't be able to go to work and back home together."
"Well, ZhanZhan, you could drive me to work in the morning and pick me up in the afternoon. Even though I like working with you and I'll miss it. So it's more important to me that you really do what you love. I'll see you before and after work, nothing will change that. Just don't forget to tell your boss to make sure you get the vacation for our wedding and honeymoon before you sign the contract. Because I insist on that date." Yibo replied.
Zhan was so happy that he almost jumped into Yibo's arms and kissed him. Yes, he would miss working with the residents, but he also knew that he would probably always regret it if he rejected the job just because of the residents.
After Zhan and Yibo toasted to the decision, they first called Zhan's family to let them know how Zhan had decided. His parents were very excited and happy for him. And not only because he can support them financially better now. But because they know that Zhan can finally achieve his dream.
Yibo's parents were sad that they won't meet Zhan at work anymore. But they were also very happy. "I was kind of hoping we could make a family tradition of everyone working in the same company. But I am very happy for you Zhan. And now that we can't see each other at work, you have to come visit us at least twice a week with Yibo." Said Yibo's mother.
"I promise we'll come visit you very often." Zhan replied giggling.
"Very well. Now, celebrate a bit more and as soon as you sign the contract, we'll all celebrate together." Said Yibo's father as he said goodbye.
But Zhan had imagined the call to his sister differently. When he called her, she cried on the phone. Zhan hadn't even gotten a chance to tell her about his decision. Because she explained to him crying that her husband had left her after he had an affair with his colleague for a year. The colleague who even called him at night or wrote to him and he always claimed it was just because of work.
Stunned, Zhan told Yanli to come home. That she should take her son and come back to Beijing. He would help her find an apartment and also help her get through the divorce as quickly as possible. Yibo also immediately said that he would help her with everything. He even transferred money for the flight and told her that he would take care that she had a place to stay for the time being.
He called his parents, explained the situation to them from his future sister-in-law and they offered that she and her son could move into Yibo's old room for the time being. She would not have to pay rent and should first recover from the shock.
After the phone call, Zhan informed his sister, who was overjoyed and grateful. She promised to pack her things and come back the very next day.
But Zhan had also another thought. Wasn't Yibo's brother Hai Kuan looking for a wife? Could his sister possibly become that woman? After all, the two got along very well when the two families first met. And Hai Kuan often asked about Yanli and her son Li. Who knows, maybe there could be some sparks between the two once they live together?
