"I met someone!" If this was in a comedy live studio audience show, at that moment we would probably hear claps and cheers.
But this was real life and when Theo came running into the kitchen while we were all eating peacefully breakfast and said that exact sentence, nobody reacted at all.
We all looked at him with weird expression on our faces but nobody said anything. For some reason he was wearing sunglasses.
Theo crossed his arms. "Seriously? No reaction at all! I expected better from you" he scoffed looking at us and then sat next to Hero putting half a croisant in his mouth. I didn't dare to look at Mercy's expression.
"Who did you meet, sweety?" Martha asked trying to start a conversation.
"While I was in the grocery store, boom, this girl suddenly bumps into me with her cart. She excuses herself and tries to put all her stuff back at the cart. And of course as the gentleman I am I helped her. We ended up having a conversation for about an hour at that exact isle. We have so many things in common. You should meet her, Hero. You'll love her"
I coughed at the last sentence and Hero smiled at me.
"Did you get her number?" Hero asked with a full mouth.
"Of course" Theo answered and at that moment I felt Mercy's hand gripping mine from under the table. She kept eating cassualy her food, no weird expression on her face but the truth is my hand was dying.
"She's super cute, bro. And her laugh is the cutest thing I've ever heard" Theo continued and Mercy gripped my hand even tighter.
"Cool, but why are you wearing sunglasses inside?" I asked him and Mercy slightly loosened her grip.
"I just feel cool, today" He said with a smile.
"You feel cool every day" I rolled my eyes.
Without another word, Hero just grabbed the sunglassed and took them off his face.
"Dude-" we all gasped when we saw his eyes. His one eye actually. It was so beaten up he couldn't even open it. Also he had one scar on his eyebrow.
"What the hell?" Hero exclaimed and so did his parents. Mercy's grip on my hand suddenly vanished. Next thing I knew she had left my hand and she was running on the other side of the table kneeling next to him.
"What the hell happened to you?" she took his face in her hand to examine it.
Theo looked away. "I'm fine" he tried to break free but Mercy wouldn't let him.
"I didn't ask if you were fine. I asked what happened?" Mercy said firmly.
"Bro you got shitfaced" Hero said.
"I was putting up this picture on the wall and I didn't have a good grip and it fell on my eye. That's all" Theo explained.
Mercy gave him the look. "Great" she said. "Now, why don't you tell us what really happened?"
He looked at her. Their eyes- well Theo's one eye- connected for some seconds, probably having a stare down. In the end he sighed and gave up. "I got into a fight" he looked away.
"With who and why?"
"It doesn't matter"
"You could have really gotten yourself hurt, Theo. Why don't you even fucking listen to me?" Mercy snapped. It was obvious there was a story behind this and they needed to solve it.
I motioned at Hero and he looked at his parents and we all started to leave the kitchen to give them some alone time. But when I heard his next sentence I stopped right on my tracks.
