New Thitipoom
I stared around the room. Not much had changed in the last few years. The same antique wood furniture, the huge grandfather clock, the same dull red curtains and a wall covered with photos and memories..........even the same toy cars with which I used to play when I was a kid, adorned the display cabinet.
"You still have these toys uncle?" I smiled at Dr.Ratchanon (or as I call him here Uncle Tharim)
"Hmmm......you used to play with those when you were a kid. Remember New?"
"Hahaha...hmmm.....I never had so many toys at home.....so I used to love coming here."
"Want some tea?"
"Yes please."
He placed a tray loaded with tea and muffins on the coffee table. Both of us sat down, while he added the sugar and offered me the cup.
"How is your mother?" He asked taking a sip from his cup.
"Her arthritis has gotten worse but she never listens, her work never ends. She keeps asking me to come back here..."
"She must be lonely New. After Nimit's (New's dad) death, you were all she had. Then you left for Bangkok and she started working more to keep herself busy. It must have taken a toll on her health."
"I keep telling her to wrap her food delivery business but she wouldn't listen......"
"Hmm....i can understand. How are you liking your job?"
"It's okay...."
"It's good you took time off , your mom keeps worrying about you..... moreover you work too hard yourself."
"I learnt from the best." I smiled at him and he laughed.
"If that was a compliment then thank you. But I don't want you to overwork yourself kid...... otherwise you might end up alone like me someday."
Though he kept his smile intact yet I could see the sadness in his eyes. After his dad's death, it must have been hard living here all alone.
(A/N: if you guys have forgotten, Dr.Ratchanon's dad died in the first chapter when he had gone home to attend the funeral and New became Tay's dad's doctor.)
"But it's really tough to get leaves uncle."
I sipped the tea. It was hot and had a lovely flavour. It reminded me of the tea we had at Lee's tea estate.
"Hmm.... Your department head Dr.Korat is a stickler for rules."
