"Uhm. Who Told you about the $pritz?" She asked with furrowed eyebrows and shock all over her face
"Does it matter?" I asked with a raised eyebrow
She took a deep breath "obviously not but Ayola the less you know, the better" I shot her a look "really Ayola, the less you know the better"
"Why?" I shouted; she gave me a look "I'm sorry but I don't understand why. You told me my father was a dangerous man and now you won't tell me what it is that's so dangerous about him and then I get a tip off about googling 'The $pritz'. Mother what is going on?" I asked in frustration
She sighed in distress "if I tell you, promise me you won't go digging?" I shrugged my shoulders "Ayola I need you to promise me!" She scolded
"Fine. Fine. I promise" I said crossing my index and middle finger
She nodded "have you ever heard of a hacker named Click?"
I thought for a second "I think I've read about him somewhere"
She nodded "he's the greatest hacker to ever live. He practically made the $pritz what they are today" she breathed out "Click recruited your father back when you were in High School. Groomed him so that he would branch out to SA"
"Is dad a gangster?" I snapped out
"The original $pritz sell girls to foreign countries, transport drugs, rob banks..." This whole time she was counting my mouth was open. I couldn't believe, actually no! I didn't want to believe that my father was capable of such a thing "but with your father, they only work in the deep web. Steal cars, new software, hack companies, rob banks and jewellery stores"
"So, he's a gangster?" I asked again
"you could say that" she said with a nod trying to read my expression "when he was gone for a whole year back when I was doing grade 8, was he busy being trained by the $pritz?" I asked she nodded "then why say he was recruited when I was doing grade 10?" she sighed "because that’s when he started his own team here in South Africa. Ayola I tried to convince him to get out but once you in there’s no getting out" she said with a heavy sigh "so the company and everything else is just a front for his illegal activities?" she nodded "why am I only hearing about all of this now?" she shrugged her shoulders "I guess it never came up but since you going to marry one of his men I guess you might as well know" she said "so there’s no backing out? I have no choice but to be tied to a criminal" I shouted she shook her head "baby its nothing like that" I shook my head "what’s it like then mom? he is a criminal, he's killed people before and he robs banks and does every terrible thing there is"
"Your father wants what's best for you. Someone he knows" she defended
"And that being a replica of him, right? Are you even happy with him or you with him because you can't leave?" I argued
She shot me a look "I love your father Ayola. He makes me happy" she argued back
"Whatever you say mom" I said sarcastically
It was now Friday and I was invited, more like dad demanded I go home as there was going to be a family dinner with my future in-laws. GREAT! Steve barged into my room as I had just finished packing my handbag
“ever heard of knocking?” I asked with a raised eyebrow.
He chuckled “oh get over yourself honey. Where to?”
“Home” I said rolling my eyes
He laughed “argh you poor thing. You will be fine”
The only friend that knew about everything was Simmy and she was all the way in Bloem, so we facetimed everyday with her constantly checking up on me. Two days back I had a mental breakdown, everything was just too much to handle, I found myself drowning in my sorrows to a point where I woke up in a hospital bed. Apparently one of my friends found me passed out on the floor in my room and called an ambulance and that’s how they found out about the pregnancy. I lied obviously and told them that it was the pregnancy that led to my mental breakdown and they bought it, I didn’t need them knowing all my business you know?
I faked a smile “I guess so. What’s going on with you?”
He shrugged “what’s not going on with me?” he sighed, I looked at him “daddy’s wife found out about us and she threw a fit… obviously” I clasped my mouth “I know right”
“how?” I asked still in shock
Steve was seeing this married man and they seemed pretty serious, but they were very discreet about their relationship, daddy did everything for him
“she went through his phone and then called me to swear at me and all that other dramatic shiit wives do. Argh I’ll be ok doll, how’s the baby?” he said carelessly
I shrugged my shoulders “are you ok though my friend, I know how you felt about him”
He shrugged “I will be fine doll. I’ll get another daddy, actually there is one I’ve been flirting with” I just burst out and laughed at him, Steve had so much drama it wasn’t even funny, well it was very funny “should I lie? We’ve been flirting and things are great between us. I might just pursue him, and he’s not married” I gave him a look still in tears from laughing “well rubber doll daddy has money and is divorced, all his kids have jobs, so he doesn’t know what to do with his money. I will show him what to do with it. We are taking that trip to Mozambique before the second semester starts”, I rolled
my eyes “don’t give me that. We’ve been planning it since first year, we deserve it Yola”
“I know my friend, but I have a baby on the way now” I argued defeated
He shook his head “nobody said when you have a baby you have to be boring and dull. We are going!” he stood up and headed towards the door
“but Steve” he shook his head
“I’ll see you when you get back. Love you” he blew a kiss before walking put. I sighed in defeat
Just then my phone rang, I looked at the caller ID and it was my brother
“Little sister” he said
“hey brother, you downstairs?” I asked taking my handbag
“yep” he said
“coming now” I said dropping the call
I made my way downstairs. He got out and hugged me tightly
“you’ve lost weight” he said breaking the hug
I shrugged my shoulders “do you blame me?”
He folded his arms and shot me a look “you pregnant, stress is not good for the baby”
“can we please just leave” I said pushing throwing my bag in the backseat “please Aphiwe, I don’t need this”
He nodded and went to his side “have you told Lwando?” I shook my head “he deserves to know Ayola” I shrugged “he’s the father of the child Ayola”
“weren’t you the one who told me to stay away from him?” I snapped
“did you?” he asked. I looked out of the window “my point exactly, look where it’s gotten you. it’s a little too late to want to stay away from him now don’t you think?”
I rolled my eyes. “what’s done is done and I not telling him about a child he won’t even be part of!”
He didn’t respond. We drove to MacDonald and he parked outside “what will you eat?” I shrugged “will a fold over meal be fine?”
“I don’t know. I’m not hungry” I said annoyed
“don’t snap at me, I didn’t get you pregnant here. Will a fold over meal do?” he asked taking his wallet
I shrugged “whatever you choose is fine” I said
He got out and went to buy it. I was left with a ringing phone, it was Lwando. What did he want?
“Ayola?” he said sounding unsure
“yes, this is she” I said
I heard him exhaling “I’m in Durban, when are you free?”
I gasped in shock “what are you doing in Durban?”
“business. I want to see you, when are you free?” he demanded
I shrugged “I’m going home for the weekend. I won’t be able to see you”
“when are you going back to your place?” he asked with firmness in his voice
I was shocked that he knew I had a place of my own. How did he even know that?
“I’m going back to res Sunday later” I said
He chuckled “I’ll drive you!” he said before dropping the call not giving me a chance to argue or contest his word.
After some time, my brother got inside and handed me my food “here”
“thank you” I said
“you seem a little more humbled than before, what’s up?” he asked starting the car
“Lwando just called and he is in Durban” I spoke slowly still in shock about the part of him fetching me
“that’s good, you’ll get to tell him about the baby” I shook my head no vigorously “why not Ayola?”
I just shook my head again “Lwando doesn’t need to know about this baby. I won’t tell him, and neither will you!” I argued pointing my finger at him
He brushed my finger out of his face “whatever. It’s your baby!” he said
I nodded and dug in. I never knew how hungry I was until I was done with everything and I was still hungry. I couldn’t wait to get home so I could eat Mamu’Gloria’s food. When we parked outside, I literally ran inside and found her in the kitchen with my mother. I threw myself in her arms
“Glory I missed you” I said buried in her homely arms
She giggled “I missed you too my baby. How are you?” she asked pulling me away from her
I smiled; it was genuine. I had missed her that much “I’m ok. I miss your food” I said hiding my face with my hands
They both laughed “last night I cooked spaghetti and meatballs” I smiled “your plate is in the fridge”
I walked over to the fridge thanking her. I popped my plate into the microwave and then went to great my mother. When my food was warm enough, I made my way to the lounge and dad was sitting on the couch arguing with someone on the phone
“Get your ass here now or else you’ll find yourself without a job!” he said as I walked in. I bumped into the couch and he turned to me “NOW!” he growled before dropping the phone
“Ayola” he said
I nodded “hi dad”
“how are you?” he asked
I just nodded “I’m ok thanks dad and, how are you?”
“I’m ok. your mother told me about you landing in hospital” he said
“I’m fine now. I was a little dehydrated that’s all” I said stuffing my mouth with food. He nodded and that was the end of it.
“Sir there is a Mr Sniper is here for you” Mamu’Gloria said standing by the hallway
“let him in” he said, he shot me a look
“I’ll go and put this in the kitchen” I said walking out following Glory
“and that?” I asked her when we were by the hallway
“business my baby” she said leading the way
“hi” I said not looking headed to the sink to wash my dish
“Hello Miss Majola” he said
I didn’t want to turn; I knew that voice all too damn well. What was he doing in my father’s house? How did they know each other?
