"My Angel?" He said taking my hand into his "you're awake" he kissed my hand countless times
"You look like shiit" I said laughing at him
He chuckled "you should see yourself" he said with a smirk
"Where's my son" I said trying to sit up, I cried out in pain
"Majola" he said getting up from the chair. He looked like he had been beaten up by a group of people, whatever toxin he inhaled really did a number on him! "Are you Ok?" He asked with so much concern
I nodded "help me sit up" I said trying again
He shook his head "you need to rest Mrs Me" he said pushing me back "I'll go call someone to bring him" I nodded. He walked out leaving me laying back
"Mama" Okuhle said walking in. Her hair was tied up in two ponytails, she was wearing a tuu-tuu dress with white shoes... She was definitely dressed by my mother in law
"My baby" I said opening my arms "come here" I said waving at her
She smiled and ran to towards the bed "hello beautiful" she giggled
"Hello mommy. Are you Ok?" She asked sitting where here father was
"Join me in bed" I said patting next to me
She shook her head "I don't want to hurt you" she said innocently
I chuckled "just climb on the bed sweetheart, you won't hurt me"
She eyed me for a while before climbing on the chair to get on the bed, I helped her up sucking in the pain. No mother wants to look weak in front of their child. I cuddled her
"I missed you" I said kissing her head
"Me too. I saw the baby" she said looking up at me
I smiled "and? How is he?"
She smiled from ear to ear "he's tiny"
I giggled "I'm sure. Do you like having a little brother?" She nodded, last time I asked her about having a sibling she was not so happy "are you sure?"
"Yes. He's pretty" she said
"My two faves" Lwando said walking in with our new member. He looked at Oku
"I missed her" I argued before he made a big deal out of nothing
He nodded "meet Thandolwethu" he said placing him in my arms
He was really tiny. A nurse walked in right after "I'm sure I don't need to teach you how to breastfeed" I shot her a look. Oku is living proof. "Because he was born a premature, we'll have to be extra careful when dealing with him. We need you to wash before you can feed him and the rest we will deal with as we go along" she said
I just nodded, I was too busy admiring my little one to mind her and her stinky attitude. I looked at my husband
"Lizzy please give us some space" he said looking at me, she looked at him with a raised eyebrow "now please" he said a little tense. She clicked her tongue and walked out... wow!
"I don't want to know" I said
"Oku go call the doctor, I need to take mommy to the shower" he said helping her off the bed. She ran out
"she's an ex, well not really an ex. We used to sleep together at some point"
"I said I did not want to know!" I said calmly
The doctor walked in "welcome back Ayo" she paused as Lwando gave her a death stare "Mrs Mbana" I smiled
"Don't mind him please. Please take him so I can wash" I said handing her Thando
"You need to be careful, you gave birth via cesarean" she said
Lwando and I chuckled "I guess we have a thing for cesarean" he said with a shrug
She chuckled "damn! So you know how to" we both nodded "perfect. Mr Mbana will take you to a bathroom close by" she headed towards the door "don't do anything you shouldn't do" she pointed out
Hubby gave me that naughty smile of his that always sent chills down my spine I blushed "we won't doc!" She just laughed walking out, I looked at Lwando "we not having sex!"
He sighed in defeat "I fucking missed you! I almost died because of you woman!" He argued
"And I saved you asshole!" I gave him my hand "help me up!"
"You mad about something" he said helping me up
"Your ex fuck buddy or whatever is my son's nurse, why would i be mad?" I asked sarcastically
He huffed "instead of speaking in riddles, tell me what you want me to do" he said annoyed
I looked at him "screw you!" I said pushing him
He took a deep breath "she's an asset to The $pritz" I chuckled. He sighed "I'll get Thando a new nurse" I scoffed "tell me what you want kitten!" He said in frustration
"Just take me to a bath tub" I said limping
He held me up until we reached the bathroom, he poured water for me while I sat on the toilet seat waiting for the tub to fill
"Majola please talk to me. Slap me, shout at me or something but just don't keep quiet" he said in anger "please" he pleaded
"Lwando you put our son and daughter at risk!" I yelled
He ran his hand through his head "were you going to come willingly?"
I shot him a look and then chuckled "it was her idea wasn't it? She suggested you drug me and get me here? She gave you the drugs didn't she?" I yelled and he kept quiet "didn't she?" He looked down "wow! Just wow Lwando. What if she had caused me to miscarry or made me give birth to a stillborn? Then what?"
He huffed "your water is ready"
I nodded "so you ask me not to give you the silent treatment and when I finally talk, you have nothing to say? Great!" I said getting up. He walked towards me to help but I smacked his hand "don't touch me!" I limped to the bath and got in.
He came to kneel next to the tub "I'm sorry" he said pouring water on my back "I screwed up. I'm sorry Ok. I really am" he said in frustration "I never intended to bring you or our kids any harm. I thought I was protecting you guys but clearly I wasn't. I'd say I'm cool with you divorcing me but then I'd be lying because I would never let you go. I'd die before I watch you be with anyone else but me" he sighed "what do you want to know?"
I looked at him and he raised an eyebrow. I nodded "Ok. I want to know everything!"
He sighed "I need you to promise me one thing"
I raised an eyebrow "and what's that?"
"That you will never walk out on me despite what I tell you. That your love for me will remain unchanged" he held out his pinkie
I entwined my pinkie with his “I promise”
I never understood the importance of vows when getting married until I married my husband. Lwando taught me a lot, he opened me up to many new things in life, before I married him I thought that my life with him would be like one in the movies where I’d have to live in vain because of his mental sickness but by God’s grace he had it controlled. He never missed therapy, he never missed taking his pills all because he had vowed to. You see I could have left the second I found out he was associated with my father, I could have left the minute I found out he was Bipolar, ok maybe I did but that was not the reason I left at the time, it was my own personal insecurities and the thought of him relapsing and being a monster because I had died did not sit well with me so to protect him and whoever came after me I found it best to walk away. You see the thing about loving a person is that no matter how many times they hurt you or you make you question them or their loyalty, you are unable to leave them because your heart is just not ready to. Hear me out, everytime you try to walk away you weigh the good and the bad they’ve done, you look at the mistakes and everything that came with them and how it even got to those mistakes but when you look at both the good and the bad you find that the good will always outweigh the bad. You will find that yes he screwed up, but what about the number of times he didn’t? What about the times you screwed up and he never left? Women are not the easiest creatures to love and that’s a fact, I am proof of that but Lwando was patient enough with me and even if he probably cheated on me at some point, he never made me feel it or second guess him in anyway so yeah, I cant just leave him and then I have two beautiful kids by him that I have to think off. You see I wouldn’t mind my daughter marrying someone like her father because I don’t think there would ever be any man who would love her the way she deserves to be loved more than someone like her dad.
I’ll admit, when I learnt of my arranged marriage I was mad and hurt and thought my father hated me but looking back it was the best decision he had ever made about my life because the partner he chose for me is one I wouldn’t trade for the world! Not a single dad has Lwando ever looked at me with different eyes, we fight, I get on his last nerve but not once have I seen his eyes filled with hate or anything along those lines. His eyes are always filled with love for me and his children.
I watched him as our fingers were entwined with each other and found myself smiling, I shouldn’t have been smiling but this was my husband, this was my Sniper and he would risk his life all over again for me because he loves and he realises the importance of making vows and promises
He breathed out letting go of our fingers “I met your father when I was in varsity, UCT. I was the top of my class and there they recognise good students. At the time my parents and I weren’t quite on good terms with the Bipolar and OCD thing going on, mom kept contact but not her husband.” He paused and looked up at me, I offered a smile “As a reward I was allowed to shadow your father for a week and seemingly I made an impression and when he learnt of who my parents were, he made it his mission to get into business with them but I only learnt of that on our wedding day. Your father took me under his wing and ensured that after university I never had to look for a job because he had already secured one for me an unlike others I didn’t start at the bottom, I got there with my degree and became the manager of a multimillion company” he breathed out, all I could think of was what was so special about Lwando that my father would trust him with his millions? “I know what you thinking and those were my thoughts exactly, how could he trust a fresh out of varsity kid with his millions but that’s your dad, he has an eye for potential. Eventually he enrolled me into varsity to further my studies while managing the company. Both those required my attention and there were times where I’d have mental breakdowns because the work was just too much to handle but I didn’t quit, I couldn’t quit, I needed to prove to him and myself that I could do it and by God’s grace I made it cum laude and the company expanded. It was then that he had me do minor jobs for the $pritz, like hacking into security systems of banks, hacking cars” I looked at him with my mouth hung open, that was minor? “everything I know about computers is stuff I taught myself from the internet and then a year later after completing my studies he had me shadow him, his work for the $pritz and from there curiosity got the best of me and so he sent me for military training in the states for a year” I stopped him
“how old were you?” I asked
He chuckled “when I enrolled at university I was 17 and when I finished my accounting course I was 19, I did my honours at 20 a” I stopped him again
“if your life was so busy, where did you get the time to have a girlfriend and stuff?” I asked with furrowed eyebrows
He chuckled again “when you’re a guy like me, you make time to get some ass one way or the other” I shot him a look “that was before I met you Majola geez” I rolled my eyes “anyway I was 21 when I was getting all the training that was required of me, that’s how I became a sniper, the best there is” I raised an eyebrow “from there onwards your father let me travel back and forth between Cape Town and East London for jobs, while studying part time because he needed me to have something to fall back on should anything ever happen. When I was 22 I had all the time, between school, work and girlfriends, things were good until my ex died and I had a breakdown, I spent 3 months in the loonybin house” I furrowed my eyebrows “that was not enough for your father to drop me. he was the reason I even spent such little time there. From there onwards I was his second in command for those years. When I met you I was going for a job in East London, The $pritz related job. I knew you were Ayola Majola but I just didn’t think you were the General’s daughter. Knowing you were his daughter made me want to know you more, call it that badboy instinct but I had to know you and it didn’t help that you this beautiful and that good in bed that you had me addicted to you. When I left for Cape Town I had to go attend a $pritz matter but you being you had to make things difficult for me. Your father almost killed me for not seeing that job through” I shot him a look, I was shook that my father would almost kill someone he practically raised “yeah, he said I fucked up and if I had been there then things would have been smoother. Well the project was a success but the timing was not as rehearsed” I nodded “I wanted to quit, I thought that the only way out would be to get his daughter pregnant and maybe he would see the danger I’d then be putting you in but not your father. He told me that being in the $pritz would be the only way to keep my woman and kid safe”
“when was this?” I asked with a raised eyebrow
“this was after you and I met again in Durban and your tummy was visible” I nodded “he did suspect that it was you I had made pregnant but I assured him that I only knew you by when I drove you to Howard only and he bought it” I nodded “Through my projects with your father we’ve made enemies everywhere and being a Sniper I have killed a number of people” I clasped my mouth, yes I knew he was a Sniper but I didn’t think he’d be that bold to mention that he’s killed “When I asked you not to change your social media details to my surname it was because I knew that I’d be putting a target on your back and I couldn’t afford that. I couldn’t afford to risk your life like that but someway somehow they found out about you guys and that’s why that night I had you drugged, I needed to get you out of the house so that you are not killed because of me. Our house is wrecked as it is, its been burnt down but the people that were after you had planted something in my car that was set to kill me slowly. Me switching on the aircon had it activated and had you not called me when you did I probably would be dead by now because I couldn’t smell the chemical but I would feel the migraines, the chest pains, my skin irritable and slowly burning be like I was wearing hot metal” I looked at him and he was looking down. “when I walked in your room I was so sure that I wouldn’t make it, my body was ready to shut down but I had to hold on for you and our daughter, I had to make sure that your face is the last thing I see before I die” I placed my hand on his cheek and he leaned in on my touch “Ayola i never promised you a fairy-tale marriage but thank you for sticking with me even when it wasn’t all roses.” I smiled “now you can ask me whatever you want to know about me being Sniper” he said looking up at me
I took a deep breath “how many?” he frowned “how many people did you kill?”
He took a deep breath and looked down “plus-minus 2000 or so”
I raised an eyebrow, he shrugged “ok, I guess I asked” he nodded “And your enemies, should I always be on the lookout?”
“no, took care of them but for safety purposes yes” he said
I nodded “and is there a possibility that you might go to prison in future? because Lwando I am not cut out to be a single mom who goes to visit her husband in prison”
He chuckled “no. everything about the $pritz and my involvement was destroyed with our house”
“and this place?”
“this place is a safe house, when you ready to go home I’ll take you to your new house” he said playing with my hand
“Lizzy” I said looking straight at him
“I met Lizzy when I joined the $pritz, she had been there a few months prior to me and she’s the best nurse they have, no-one has the skills she has” I shot him a look
“Ayola I’m with you and I sorted the issue of her taking care of our son” I nodded “she is not a threat to you. she knows you my wife and if she would dare harm you or our son then I would kill her myself!” he said with so much coldness in his voice “I love you Ayola and from here onwards Sniper does not exist” he said brushing my cheek
“thank you” I said
3 MONTHS LATER
Things in the Mbana household were amazing, my husband was hands on and our son was growing up properly, he had taken his father’s complexion and he was just perfect in every sense. Our daughter loved her little brother more than the word, sometimes I think she thought he was her doll the way she was adamant on playing with him and would throw a tantrum when I refused her playing with him.
It was a Saturday and Lwando was playing with our little ones in the backyard while I made us snacks and the little one his bottle. There was a knock on the door, I turned and there were two men dressed in police uniform
“hello gentlemen” I said wiping my hands walking towards the door
“Mrs Mbana we are here looking for your husband?” one gentleman said
I opened the door “may I ask what this is about?” I asked with a raised eyebrow
“Ma’am we have a warrant for your husband’s arrest” one of the officers said
“what is he being arrested for?” I asked with a straight face
“murder charges, illegal weapons, bank robberies, the list is endless really. Where is he?” the one that spoke first asked
“please wait here while I go and get him” I said walking out. I met our stay in nanny in the passage “please take the kids upstairs now”
“Ma’am whats”
“I don’t pay you to ask any questions. Call my father when you get upstairs” I said walking to the backyard with her following me
“hey” he said looking up at me, “whats going on?” he asked
“please come with me” I said walking back to the house with him behind me
“whats going on?” he asked sounding confused
I turned to him and slapped him, he held his cheek “you promised me there would be nothing pointing to you!”
“Maj..” I raised my hand silencing him
“just go, I’ll follow you to the police station” I said rushing to the lounge for the car keys
