Once upon a time,
Long ago,
There were mermaids who lived deep in the sea, hidden from the human world. Only female mermaids swam in the great blue, for the mer people believed men were the cause of all chaos.
The mer people were able to harness the true power of the moon's light, absorbing it like a plant would sunlight, through their scales. They used the light of the moon to prevent sickness and lengthen their lifespan. Mermaids however, were never able to prevent death or complety heal fatal wounds. This use of power made the mermaids so advanced as a species it was considered magical. Legend has it that in turn for the use of the moon's power these beautiful sea creatures were given the assignment to guard the sea and all its inhabitants, at all costs. They were the peace keepers in the ocean. They desired to help the ocean and serve along side this natural force. Even if it meant death...
In their spare time they sang and played with marine life. Mermaids made art out of magic and coral, arranging the coral reefs like florists arranging flowers in a bouquet . Mer people wrestled with octapi to measure their strength and for entertainment. They even looked after orphaned marine animals whose parents were killed by fishermen. Mer people created elaborate bubble designs in the sea foam and helped the moon pull the tides. They often told stories of legendary mermaids defending the sea, marine animals giving up their lives in loyalty to them, and horror stories of the human world.
However things were not always this peaceful.
When chaos broke out, a siren rose among them, destined for greatness. Her mother loved her home so much she gave her daughter this honorary title, meaning "the sea".
