The next few months really made you feel at home. Kath eventually introduced you to Laura, who turned out to be really kind and having slightly less confidence than you thought she'd have. Everything seemed to be going great, until one day you were looking for a pencil whilst in art class.
"I'm getting a weird sense of deja vu..." You said, rummaging through your backpack. You couldn't find it. Your green pencil was lost.
"Wait, there's a pencil in your pencil case! I can see it!" Katherine reached into your pencil case and pulled out a red pencil. Upon noticing what Katherine had found, you remembered why you felt like this situation had already happened. It was Kiyo's pencil. You never gave it back. "Hey, what's wrong? You look like you've just seen a damn ghost." Kath questioned in a worried tone.
"I... I miss home." You stated. "I don't think I've ever told you about my best friend." Kath nodded, preparing for a story. "Well, his name was Kiyo... I mean, that was his nickname really... his full name was Korekiyo Shinguji. He was an Ultimate as well."
"You sure do run into a lot of Ultimates." Kath laughed, but stopped when she noticed your pained expression. Your lip quivered and your eyes stung from the tears coming to them. She panicked and jumped up from her desk to hug you.
"Miss Phillips, please sit down!" The teacher said, but Kath didn't move. "Eh, whatever..." He sighed and continued to observe the class. Your friend hugged you tight as you sobbed quietly. You didn't know you would still miss home so much after all this time.
"Hey, it's okay. Tell me more about him. Maybe we'll meet him in the academy!" She comforted you, trying to calm you down. "Fate works in mysterious ways, remember that." You were calming down a little. You still missed your best friend. No matter how many friends you could make here, you would never be able to make another friend like Kiyo.
"He was the best friend I have ever had. And he still is really." You explained.
"What was his talent?" Kath inquired. She was clearly interested.
"He was the Ultimate Anthropologist."
"...the Ultimate what now?"
"Anthropologist. He studied humanity. It's kind of hard for me to explain. He said it so easily, but he used really big words which I can't exactly remember." You giggled a little, wiping some of the tears from your eyes and cheeks. Kath laughed along with you. "Actually, I have a picture of us. My mom wanted to frame it, but the frame broke... blame Hiroya."
"Oh, do you have it on you?" Kath almost squealed with excitement. You smiled.
"I've had it on me every day since I moved." You reached into the front pocket of your backpack and pulled out a slightly crumpled photo. It depicted you and Kiyo, standing together in front of the lake that you went to on holiday. Both of your families went there together. You remembered how Miyadera would have to stay inside more often because she couldn't last too long in the sun. You recalled her saying she felt off. You never knew that she was sick. And a few months later she was laying in a hospital bed.
"You guys look like such a cute couple!" Katherine stared at the picture with a cheeky grin.
"W-What!?" You almost screamed. You and Kiyo? A couple? You had never really thought about that before. However, the thought felt oddly familiar.
"I'm just kidding! Calm your nerves girl!" Kath laughed. You laughed along with her, still slightly confused. You were starting to notice certain things. Kiyo had a strange obsession with being your only friend; he barely tolerated Ami. Maybe there really was something there? No, that's stupid. It sounded like a cheesy romance story plot.
