Several fights took place. However, not even time itself made the girl less anxious about her own. So far her fights had been quick, and she hoped that her fight with Todoroki would be too, even if she lost. She didn't have much confidence that she could win, Todoroki had experience, he was smart and quick. If he used his fire Quirk that would be a problem, but if he only used his Ice Quirk, maybe she would have a chance.
She couldn't even concentrate on training before the match, her mind focused on the opponent's techniques and how he would act during the fight. Her head ached just by thinking about how much she would have to use her Quirk. A few minutes before, her friends came to greet her, wishing her good luck or making little jokes, but (Y/n) couldn't hear them talking, her eyes focused in front of her and her mind focused on the fight to come.
When her name was called, she took a deep breath and walked slowly to the arena. The corridor seemed endless, as if she had been walking for more than hours on it. The light was slowly approaching, applause and Present Mic could be heard, but everything was muffled for the girl. She went up to the arena, Todoroki and she were introduced, greeting each other with good luck. However, the (h/c)'s voice came out a little more mechanical than she would have liked.
Before the fight started, the girl took a deep breath again, now her senses seemed more heightened, but the only thing that caught her attention was her opponent.
As Midnight started the game, Todoroki launched his ice attack on the ground, trying to cover the entire arena. (Y/n) jumped, rising from the ground with her Quirk and keeping herself in the air, avoiding being caught by the ice. Her head started to ache, making her swing between flying and standing on the ground.
She tried to focus on her opponent again, ignoring the pain. She realized that some ice crystals had formed around her, so she had an idea. She took a deep breath and kicked the ice, managing to break the ends of some spikes. She could hear Present Mic screaming, asking what she was doing. She levitated the thorns too and threw them at Todoroki, but he managed to dodge them all, just a few scratches. While he was distracted, checking his body for injuries, she threw the largest piece of ice that was left, catching the boy off guard. However, when the object was just a few centimeters away, he created a wall of ice around the thorn, stopping at the very moment that it would hit his face.
The two students' breath was agitated, the girl tired and the boy scared. When he undid the wall, the girl went flying towards him, a complexion of fury on her face and blood running down her nose. Todoroki formed an ice spike just below (Y/n), with the intention of making her dodge, but she rose, flying upwards. He continued to create ice below, making the girl move further away from the ground. She kept going up, her vision getting blurred and slowly losing control of her body. Todoroki did not know what was happening, he had realized that the girl was not well, but was that all an act to deceive him?
When (Y/n) was no longer able to support herself in the air, her mind shut down, her body turned on her back and she began to fall. Screaming coming from the audience was heard by her, but they got quieter as she fell. Todoroki realized too late what was happening and the ice thorn crossed the girl's stomach, causing her to cry out in agony. She got the strength to look at what had happened, she raised her hand and managed to touch the bloody ice that passed over her belly before she passed out and her body went completely limp.
Todoroki's mouth was hanging open, not knowing what to do. Then his brain went back to work when he saw, out of the corner of his eye, Cementoss climbing up to the girl with his Quirk and pulling her off the thorn, her immobile body being hastily carried to the infirmary. Midnight announced Shouto's victory, her voice breaking a little. Todoroki automatically walked out of the arena, his body moving itself back into the stands. Had he killed one of his classmates? No, she couldn't be dead, she was just weak and the loss of some blood could have left her that way. However, his mind kept playing tricks on him, making him think of the dead girl and what his colleagues and she, if she survived, would think and talk about himself.
The girl was taken straight to the operating room. Recovery Girl could see that the wound had been deep, a hole on the left side of her belly. Anesthesia was applied and surgery was performed, hours had passed, suturing a large wound like this was extremely complicated. A kiss from Recovery Girl helped heal the wound already sewn, but the girl did not wake up, the lack of blood and the energy she used to heal the wound would make her sleep for a few more hours.
At least (Y/n) could make it home, maybe with the help of some Pro Hero, but at least she wouldn't spend the night in the infirmary. Some friends came to visit her, but Recovery Girl wouldn't let them in. In the fragile state that the girl was in, she could open her stitches. Toshinori came to visit too, he offered to accompany the girl home. Recovery Girl was surprised, immediately asking why, because even though it was just an act of altruism, she knew what was going on behind that hero facade.
"I don't think you should go, Toshinori." she said, taking the girl's file and writing down a few things "I'll ask Midnight to do it."
"Why can't I do it?" he asked, his gentle smile fading from his face.
"You know why." she replied, but the man's face said otherwise "The girl clearly likes you."
"Oh! But that's normal, I've a lot of fans." he smiled, scratching the back of his head.
"It's more than that, Toshinori. And you know that." she looked at him with an ugly face "She has a crush on you." she ended, turning back to the unconscious girl in bed.
"C-crush?!" the man coughed, a little blood coming out of his mouth. He took a handkerchief and cleaned himself quickly "I think you're mistaken." he continued, his face red as the blood on the handkerchief.
"I can see the way she looks at All Might and I think her classmates know that too." Recovery Girl said "She is just a girl, barely with age to consent, if anything would come out-"
"It would destroy my career, I know. But nothing will happen." he interrupted her, his face now sad "If she knew who I am, she wouldn't even look at me."
"Just don't get too close to her, Toshinori. Midoryia is your apprentice, but you don't have any connection with (L/n). As I was saying, if anything were to come out of you two seeing each other, it would be a disaster, you would destroy your own career and destroy her chance at having one." Toshinori opened his mouth to reply, but the lady was quicker "I know you wouldn't do that, but you can't say anything about what she would do. She's a teenager, yes, almost an adult, but still too young to make life changing choices like choosing between you and a future. I know too that I can't predict the future, but how this is going is obvious what will happen if it keeps going like this." she finished, wiping off some blood that was still stuck to the skin on the girl's arms.
"Everything will be fine, nothing will happen. Let me take her home." he said, almost as if he didn't care about anything the lady had told him.
"I'll be keeping an eye on you and her. When everything goes wrong, don't tell me I didn't warn you." she turned to him again, making a tough face, but gave a small smile "Now go watch the rest of the event, she'll probably be awake when it finishes."
He thanked her, took a deep breath and changed to All Might. His facade ready for a few more minutes of presence in the stands.
