INNAThe moment I enter my office, everyone goes crazy, assaulting me with questions about the incident with my client. Apparently, his little escapade from last night is all over the news, especially since our presence there caused trouble for the owner of the night club as well who is being put under investigation regarding the illegal gambling. Thankfully, there are no photos or footage to hint at Namjoon and Jungkook's involvement. I barely have time to set my bag on the desk before Ki-Jung drags me into an emergency meeting with Mr. Lee and the other partners.
"I knew we shouldn't have taken this case" Ki-Jung says, fidgeting with the corner of the paper in front of him.
"What is done, is done" Mr. Lee, our big boss, contemplates. "How did you know where to find the defendant?" he asks me. My eyes dart to him and I clear my throat before I start speaking. He always makes me uncomfortable for some reason. Maybe because he is a rough guy, never smiling or showing any sign of joy. But I know he is not a bad person. Only maybe...overly professional.
"Oh, I was in Itaewon one night and I randomly saw him enter The Wild Cat. I wasn't certain, but I had to try it, knowing about his gambling issue and everything." I shrug and I make eye contact contact with my senior Ki-Jung who smiles proudly at me. He always told me I'm good at investigating and that I would've had a brilliant career as an FBI agent. I find myself smiling back, despite all the tension floating in the air and the tiredness in my bones. Last night I spent it over at Namjoon's and we went to sleep late after midnight. He made sure to take the game we used to play downstairs to his bedroom and man, we've been busy! It's still a mystery how I managed to wake up this morning and even make myself look decent. I can't say the same thing about Morrison, though. I bet she is still locked in the bathroom trying to wipe away the permanent marker from her forehead. I suddenly feel sorry for Jungkook. He is in deep shit.
"Ms. Young, the way you handled things last evening and secured the case, despite the obstacles your own client put in your way it is worthy of appreciation. I don't say this often, but good job! You proved once again why you deserve to be in our team." Mr. Lee concludes and the other partners nod in agreement. I feel my stomach churn with emotion. It's been a little over a year since I moved to Seoul and started working for this law firm and seeing the sincere appreciation I'm receiving from them brings tears in my eyes. I work like a madwoman, giving everything for my cases and it's fulfilling to get a good feedback from my colleagues and my employer. It makes me feel that at least there is one thing that I've done right in this life. Something that is entirely mine and no one can take it from me. My own little magic.
"Thank you, sir!" I shyly say. "However, it is important to prepare for Mrs. Chung's hearing that I'm positive it will be scheduled soon. We have two defendants confessing for both crimes, one of them being innocent. I know for sure the prosecution will try to bring them in front of the judge as accomplices." I explain, already back in business. I absentmindedly play with the moon pendant Namjoon gave to me last night, it's weight around my neck already comforting. I was a little reluctant at first since I'm not into jewelry that much, but now I believe I'll never be able to take it off.
"That's right. They are two big fish and the prosecution will not let this chance slip their hands. But I don't believe Mrs. Chung will agree to withdraw her confession and change her declaration in detriment of her son." Ki-Jung says scratching his jaw. I can already see the wheels turning in his head, thinking of a strategy. My sunbae is one of the most skilled criminal lawyers I have encountered in my years of practice. I'll never stop being grateful for being given the opportunity to work with him, be in his team. I have learned so much from him and he saw the potential in me as well.
"Then you'll have to convince her, Ki-Jung." Mr. Lee replies watching him straight in the eye, knowing very well that he won't take no for an answer. Ki-Jung sunbaenim throws me a stern look from across the table which I return immediately with the same expression, both of us aware that this is gonna be a pain in the ass, but we're in the game nevertheless. He doesn't like to lose and I never say no to a challenge. Good luck taming the beast, then.
