ADALINE'S POV
With the kids with Jim and Angie for the long weekend, Paul and I have taken our free time to work down in the studio on his next album and my next book. I'll be the first one to say he's been much more productive than I have been. He's been banging away at that piano and scribbling away with lyrics, while I've been slowly creating a pile of crumpled up pieces of papers.
"Why is writing a book so hard?" I grumbled and threw another piece of paper in the pile.
He turned to me and let out a chuckle. "You've written two already."
"I know! But coming up with an idea for a third is a struggle. I don't know what it is, I'm not liking any of my ideas lately." I let out a sigh and put down my notebook.
"You're just going through a funk, love. I go through the same with writing songs."
"My publisher is constantly calling to ask for the plot for the next book. I can only use the 'I'm too busy with the kids' excuse so many times."
"Maybe a trip up to Scotland or Sussex will help inspire you. We'll have to make a trip soon."
"A trip up there would be nice...I feel like we usually get really inspired to write songs while we're up there."
Martha let out a loud bark, getting up and running over to Paul.
"Looks like Martha agrees with you." He laughed as he began to pet her. "Yes you love going up to the farm. Having all that space to run around. Yes you do."
"I love watching her run after you when you go out for a ride on the horses."
"You need to start riding with me more." He looked up at me. "I feel like you mostly just spend time in the barn or in the house while I'm out riding."
"Because the last time few times we went up there I was pregnant with Mia. That played a big part in that."
"We did spend a lot of your pregnancy up there..."
"You know since Mady has a pony you'll have to get Mia one too in a few years."
"I know I will. I'll spoil her just as much as the other two."
I couldn't help but smile as I went over, sat down at the piano bench and kissed him. "You're such a wonderful dad..."
"And you're an amazing mum..." He kissed back, wrapping his arm around me.
I laid my head on his shoulder and looked over at the clock. "Look at the time. Come on, we have to get to the party." I stood up, taking his hand. "It was nice of Mum to let Alex and Amelia have they party at her house while she's gone."
"It is. I can't think of the last time we all were together without the kids."
"Honestly it's been a while. It'll be nice to just have time together just us adults."
"You just want to talk to your brothers about your mixed feelings about Harvey." He laughed.
"We've barely even spoken about what happened at the party. Amelia told me Alex went off when they got home. And for Harvey to call Charlie this week and tell him that he's keeping Mum up there for an extra week or so and that we all need to find someone else to watch our children? Charlie was mad. Mum loves watching the kids. Harvey has waaayyy too much attitude towards us and I know one day things are badly going to blow up." I walked into our room and went over to the closet. "I'll bet it gets brought up tonight."
"It's probably best we all discuss it...I'm still not happy with what happened at Matt's party." He said as he got changed. "I honestly thought he and Alex were goin' to go at it."
"Oh, they were definitely close to it. Hopefully tonight will just be a nice, fun evening for all of us."
"I think it'll be Mike and Mere's first night away from baby Nat."
"Oh, it is. She's been calling me the last week asking how I did being away from Mady for the first time." I said as I got into my dress.
"That was when she was still in the hospital and I made you come home for the night to sleep while Charlie and Lily watched her." Paul let out a sigh and turned to me. "It's hard to believe that the little premie baby that we sat and watched for days on end before she could come home is going to be five years old in a few months...Our little princess is growing up way to fast."
"I know! I remember the first time they let me hold her...I was so afraid. She was so tiny and hooked up to so many machines...I was afraid she'd have problems as she grew up, but she's been the healthiest and most energetic little girl." My eyes started to fill with tears. "I don't want the kids to grow up...I love them being this little..."
"Hey...c'mere..." Paul walked over, pulling me into a hug. "It's okay, darling...No matter what they'll always be our babies."
"I know..." I wiped my eyes. "If I keep thinking about it I'll keep crying." I chuckled lightly. "Come on, we should get going."
I grabbed my purse and their gift as we went downstairs and headed out for the party. Once we arrived we were greeted by Alex who you could tell was ready to party.
"Paul! Sis! Come in! Drinks and food are in the kitchen. Charlie's already here."
"Thanks, A." I smiled and went into the living room to find him.
"Addie! Paul! Thank you both so much for coming!" Amelia pulled me in for a hug.
"You're welcome! Congratulations again!" I hugged her back. "This is for you two." I handed her the gift.
"Thanks, Add."
"There's my baby sister!" Charlie walked over, handing Paul and I a drink. "Hello mate."
"Hi mate, thank you." Paul took his beer.
"Where's Lily at?"
"She and Maggie went to go see her cousin up in Bristol. It was a last minute trip."
"Awe, well at least it's a fun trip."
"But that also means that someone can enjoy his weekend off and stay late and party." Alex came over and handed Charlie a drink. "Mr. Fancy Police Officer over here needs to learn how to actually enjoy himself more. You're a party pooper most of the time."
"I am perfectly content with how I am at parties, Alexander." Charlie rolled his eyes.
"Okay, Dad." Alex joked and looked at me. "What about you? Are you gonna be a party pooper too?"
"I'm not a party pooper. I'm a mother who's very busy."
"You need to learn to have more fun, sis."
"Alex is right." Paul started. "The kids are gone the whole weekend, are you actually going to enjoy yourself?"
"What does that mean?"
"You never enjoy yourself when we go out. You only have a glass of wine when it's our date night. You should enjoy yourself for a change."
"Yeah, okay, I'll enjoy myself more tonight." I smiled and took a sip of my wine.
"There you both are! Took you long enough!" Alex yelled as Meredith and Mike walked in.
"Sorry...We had a bit of a hard time leaving Natalie." Meredith admitted. "I may have cried a bit..."
"Oh Mere, it's understandable. It's always the hardest the first time you leave them for the night."
"But we're still goin' to have a good time tonight." Mike rubbed her back. "We deserve a night out."
"You can always go to one of the bedrooms upstairs if you want some quiet to go call and check on her." Amelia said, bringing them both over drinks.
"I'll probably do that in a bit. Thank you." Meredith said as she took a drink.
We heard another knock at the door as Amelia excused herself and went over.
"Everyone I'd like you all to meet my sister Alena and her fiancé Adrian."
"It's so nice to finally meet you all and put faces to names." She smiled. "Amy talks about you all the time."
"You too! She told us all about the proposal. Congratulations!"
"Thank you!" She took Adrian's hand. "I'm very lucky."
"How long have you been together for?" Meredith asked.
"Since we were sixteen."
"You've been together so long...That's so sweet..."
"Have you set a date for the wedding?"
"We're thinking next October."
"Ooo a fall wedding."
"We originally thought about the middle of August, but we had to move it because Adrian's grandparents are going on a month long cruise for their anniversary. Then we decided a nice fall wedding would be nicer." She turned to Amelia. "Have you and Alex set a date yet?"
"Not yet. We're thinking a spring wedding. Nothing too big. Just something simple at the church and then we were going to ask Liz if we could have the dinner here afterwards."
"Oh, Mum will say yes. She'll be so excited to have it here."
She smiled and took a sip of her drink, Alena turned to us. "Amy tells me all about the little ones. Sounds like you all have your hands full."
"We definitely do." Meredith laughed. "Mike and I are always busy with Natalie, I don't know how Addie and Paul can handle three."
"How old are your three?" She asked.
"Mady's going to be five in October, Matt just turned two and Mia's four months."
"Oh wow! Sounds like you two are busy! But they're all so much fun at that age." She took a drink. "I hope the next time we all get together I can meet them. Amy said they're all so much fun to be around."
"Alena wants a lot of kids like you do, Addie. She's always loved little kids."
"No one is going to have more kids than Addie." Alex came over, ruffling my hair. "She and Paul are going to have nine kids like Queen Victoria and Prince Albert."
"Alexander!" I yelled, fixing my hair as I hit him lightly. "I am not going to have nine kids. Four max, not nine."
"Five!" Paul yelled from across the room.
"We're not having this discussion now!"
All the girls started to giggle.
"What?"
"I mean Alex does have a point...you two did want a big family." Meredith started.
"And your kids are in the same order as theirs. Girl, boy, girl."
"I'm gonna bet twenty quid their next baby is a boy!" Alex exclaimed.
"Twenty five!"
We all turned around to Charlie, all surprised that he joined in.
"What? I may be the oldest one, but I can still have fun."
"You two pick on me too much..." I grumbled, hitting Alex lightly on the arm.
"Would we be good big brothers if we didn't?"
"Yeah..mhm.." I rolled my eyes.
"I think I'm going to go call and check on Nat." Mere said, setting her glass of wine down.
"After you I'm next. I want to call and tell the kids goodnight."
"Whenever Mere gets off the phone and I'll come up and join you." Paul said to me.
Mere then went off upstairs to call her parents. I laid back against Paul as we listened to Charlie tell a story about work.
"Are you doing okay with the kids being gone?"
"Yes and no. It's nice to have some time to ourselves, but I miss 'em."
"I feel the same way." He pulled me closer.
We sat there listening to Charlie's story until we heard Mere come back downstairs. "Addie, Paul, your turn."
"Thanks. We'll be back." We both stood up and went to Mum's room to call. Paul took the phone and dialled his dad's number.
"Hi Dad. It's Paul. Addie and I just wanted to call and tell the kids goodnight."
I could partially hear noise in the background, likely the kids all excited from the call. Paul pulled me closer to him and put the phone between our ears.
"Mummy! Daddy!!"
"Hi my little babies! Are you being good for Papa and Gran?"
"Yes. Papa and Gran took us to the park and we get ice cream and watch the water." Mady told us. "Tomorrow we go to the toy store!"
"Sounds like you're all having so much fun!" Paul smiled. "Are you helping them out with the baby?"
"Yeah but Mia sleeping right now."
"That's good that she's asleep."
"Mummy...Matty sleepy..." He said with a little yawn.
"It's almost bedtime, little man. Mummy and Daddy just wanted to call and tell you both good and we love you and we'll see you on Sunday."
"We have breakfast!"
"Yes! A Mac family breakfast. Everyone's so excited to see you all."
We then heard some mumbling and a sigh from Mady. "Matty fell asleep now Papa thinks I need to go to bed too."
"You probably should, darling. Mummy and I will call you in the morning."
She let out another exasperated sigh. Her attitude definitely came from me. "Otay...goodnight Daddy. Goodnight Mummy."
"Goodnight princess."
She hung up the phone as Paul did the same. Kissing me lightly he took my hand. "How did we get so lucky?"
"I'm lucky because I have you..."
For the next few hours we all continued to drink, eat and talk the night away. This was definitely something that we had all needed. Mere and I got to know Alena more and the four of us planned a spa day for all of us girls in a week or so, wanting to do so before Lily has the baby. Adrian fit right in with the lads. It was great to see how well he and Alex got along.
"Adaline..." I felt Paul come up behind me. He wrapped his arms around my waist as he began to kiss my neck.
"Mr. McCartney, what has gotten into you lately?"
"I just have a beautiful, sexy woman that I love..."
"And I love you..."
"Charlie crashed on the couch, Alex and Amelia snuck downstairs and Mike and Mere are outside cuddling...Why don't we sneak up to your old room..?" He kissed my neck again.
"Come on." I took his hand as we went upstairs. Shutting the door behind us I couldn't help but giggle.
"What has you all giggly, miss?"
"We're in my childhood bedroom. It's so weird." I sat down on the bed. "Y'know you're the boy I've ever had up in here."
"Ye never snuck in here with your old boyfriends?"
"With my parents? Are you kidding? You know how Dad was. When I was with Max we'd always sneak off to his house. He lived three streets over."
"Well then I'm very honoured to be the first lad you've had up in here." He smirked, climbed up on the bed and started to kiss my neck again. "It's so nice to finally have time just us..."
"I agree...but we can't be too loud. With everyone spending the night someone's bound to hear us.." I held onto his head, running my fingers through his hair.
"Yeah, yeah...I make no promises..."
