As soon as Jay arrived at the district, no one was upstairs, so he went straight to the break room and sat down on the couch. As Jay started to fall into the dark part of his mind, regrets started to cloud it, then Erin walked in without noticing Jay sitting on the couch and went straight to get coffee.
As Erin finishes and turns around to walk out the break room, she immediately sees Jay sitting on the couch, she didn't know what was going on in his mind, but she knew she had something to say to him. She hesitated to tell him for a while, but eventually she figured she wouldn't get this moment again and she wanted to make it right with Jay this time, she was nervous to tell him but she took a deep breath and says, "The FBI needs me back in New York, since intelligence is taking the lead on this case." She was expecting him to get mad at her but all she got was silence, Jay was just sitting on the couch too oblivious to what Erin just said or to who was even in front of him. "Jay," Erin says, trying to get Jay back from his thoughts.
Jay looks up at her as he snapped out of his thoughts, so confused as he asks, "Hm?" Erin looks at him, now it was harder for her to say it because she knew for sure that he was listening, but she still manages to muster up enough courage to say, "I'm leaving tonight." Jay just stares at her for a while then he nods even without understanding a word Erin just said as he went back to his dark thoughts, punishing himself for what happened to Hailey. Erin knew how Jay was feeling, she knew how much he cared about her even with just little time seeing them together. She placed her cup of coffee on the table as she made her way to the couch and sat beside Jay.
Erin looks in front of her as she tries to find the right words to say to Jay. "I know how much you care about her, Jay," Erin starts which made Jay look at her, "and I also know that you're scared to admit it because you're scared of repeating the same mistake as you did with me." Erin turns to look at Jay, she could see that he was finally out of his own thoughts, he was listening to her, so she says, "Waiting is fine when you're trying to be sure, but when you finally find her, don't wait anymore."
There was a long silence between Erin and Jay, as Jay took in what Erin said, and started to realize what Erin meant by that, which started to give him some kind of closure and it showed him that Erin just wants him to be happy now which also made him realized how much Hailey means to him and his regrets came rushing back in again, "She trusted me to watch her back, Erin," Jay says breaking the silence as he continues to say, "and the day she was taken I knew I screwed up again. This was one thing I told myself not to screw up, because for the past few years she had to fix the mistakes I've made, kept secrets about my reckless doings, because she was trying to protect me, help me. All she did was help and protect me but I couldn't even do that for her on that day," Jay says, looking away from Erin.
Erin nods, she could hear the worry and the regret in Jay's voice as he said that, she took the information in and realized that Jay has finally moved on from her, she was happy for him, she was happy that it was Hailey. "You can't blame yourself for this, Jay," Erin says placing a hand on his arm for reassurance, "You're gonna find her, I know you will." With that, Erin stood up and made her way towards the door. "I'm sorry for what happened in the food court," Jay says in an apologetic voice which made Erin stop in her tracks, she turns around to look at Jay with so much confusion in her face, why was he apologizing to her? She should be the one doing that and she somewhat deserved to be called out for what she did wrong, but instead of protesting, she just says, "I'm sorry too, Jay."
