Jason headed back to Titans Tower. He knew what he had to do. It was great being part of a team, having people watch your back when you need it. But good things never last. To protect them, I need to leave. I can't be Flamebird anymore. I need to become someone else.
Jason got to the Tower and saw Dick come running toward him and hugged him.
"W-whats this for? You hate me," Jason asked.
"You're okay," Dick cried.
"Yeah? I'm fine. What? You expect me to die again?" Jason laughed jokingly but Dick looked serious.
"What happened? How did you escape?" Wally asked and Dick let Jason go.
"Uhh, long story but the Red Hood basically let me go," Jason said but he didn't want to tell anyone that it was his brother and he knew all of their identities, that would just make them worry.
"I was so worried about you, Jay," Dick said.
"Umm okay," Jason didn't know what to say.
"You're still family. So no matter what happens between us, I'll always love you, Jay."
"And I'll always love you too, Dick," Jason replied. He knew that Dick meant it as a brotherly love but Jason meant it as a romantic kind of love. It hurt Jason but he knew that Dick was getting over him so that made it ok for Jason.
"Guys. I'm quitting the Titans," Jason finally said.
There was a moment of silence but then Dick finally spoke, "You're kidding right?"
"No. I think it's time for me to move on," Jason said.
"Jay, if this is about us..."Dick tried to say but Jason cut him off.
"It's not," Jason said, "It's always me putting everyone in danger. It's just better if I leave." I'm too reckless to be a Titan.
"Jay," Dick tried to reach out but Jason moved away.
"I'm sorry. I've made up my mind," Jason said, "I'm going to grab my stuff." Jason didn't think of where he'd go but he just knew that he couldn't put his friends in danger.
"No! Jay, you're not leaving the Titans," Dick said as he tugged on Jason's sleeve.
Now, Jason got angry. I need to leave to keep them safe. To keep Dick safe. "Damn it, Dick! Let go of me."
"Jay, don't go. I'm sorry about everything that's happened between us. You're still my brother. I don't want you to leave."
It hurt Jason to see how sad Dick was, but he knew that if he stayed and his brother found out then, he'd be in danger.
"I-" Jason tried to say, but the Wally suddenly cut him off.
"If you don't want to be a Titan, then you don't have to be," Wally said, "We don't want to force you to be a Titan. But you can stay at Titans Tower since you probably have nowhere to go," Wally said.
Jason thought about it. Technically Will said that I had to quit the Titans and become a member of his gang. He didn't say that I couldn't still live with them. I don't have anywhere to go.
"Okay, I'll stay but not as a Titan." Jason said as he looked over at Dick.
"That's good enough for me, brother," Dick smiled.
