Most people had gone to bed by the time the sun fully set, me and Mark walked towards the fire where a few other people sat around it on logs
Me and Mark took a seat next to Katelyn, she shot me a warm smile and I sent her one back
After a bit of talking in our own groups Avery called us together
"So as you all know we have two new members of the group" she motioned towards us "Mark, Ethan wanna tell us how you got here?" She asked with a smile
Mark looked down like he didn't wanna speak so I did instead
"Uh well I was holding out in a gas station and he showed up, I almost shot him but then I recognized him and we've been with each other since" Mark smiled slightly at what I said and Avery nodded
"You guys knew each other before the outbreak?" She questioned I nodded
"Cool" she spoke as she poked the fire a bit to make sure it would keep going
I just watched the flames licking at the air for a bit when someone spoke
"So how long have you two been together?" The one I knew as Bird asked
It caught me off guard and I almost fell backwards off the log
"Who? Us?" I asked pointing from between me and Mark, he nodded and everyone look interesting in knowing too, I shook my head and looked at Mark who just had a dumb smirk on his face
"Oh uh- I- we're not, together" I stumbled over my words as I shot Mark a death glare for not helping me out
"O-oh sorry I just thought since.." Bird trailed off I shook my head
"It's fine" I assured him, Avery cleared her throat and began to speak
"Look what I found" she said as she pulled out a dusty guitar "anyone know how to play?" She questioned holding it up, I was surprised to see Mark raise his hand
"I do" He spoke quickly while smiling
"Oh really? well here then wanna play something for us?" she asked as she handed him the guitar
"Sure" he confirmed grabbing the guitar from her she stood up from the log she sat on by herself and let Mark sit there instead
He plucked the strings one at a time and listened closely turning the nobs on some and leaving others alone, after a bit he ran his thumb along the strings seemingly content with the sound
He then began plucking a tune and everyone quieted down and he began to sing
"Let's fall in love for the night and forget in the mornin"
He began his voice was smooth and low sending shivers down my spine
"Play me a song that you like you can bet I'll know every line, I'm the boy that your boy hoped you would avoid don't waste your eyes on jealous guys, fuck that noise" a smile spread across his face as he ran his hands over the strings expertly
"I know better than to call you mine" he looked up at me while he sang that line, I felt my face heat up slightly as I smiled softly at him
"You need a pick me up? I'll be there in twenty-five
I like to push my luck
So take my hand let's take a drive" the song became upbeat as he continued singing, smiling at everyone else as he sang
I felt a pang of sadness as I realized this song wasn't about me, he was just singing to everyone
"I've been living in the future hoping I might see you sooner
I want you, right at shotgun I know when I got one right" he directed his attention back to me and didn't take it away when he sang the next line
"Let's fall in love for the night and forget in the mornin
Play me a song that you like you can bet I know every line" he didn't take his eyes off me as he sang and my smile returned to my face as I swayed to the music
"I'm a boy that your boy hoped that you would avoid
Don't waste your eyes on jealous guys, fuck that noise I know better than to call you mine" I glanced around the area, everyone seemed to be enjoying themselves, Maggy has her head on Greys shoulder and everyone else was listening with a smile
I brought my attention back to Mark as he continued
"I love it when you talk that nerdy shit
We're in our twenties talking thirties shit
We're making money but we're saving it
Cause talking shit is cheap and we talk a lot of it"
"You won't stay with me, I know
But you can have your way with me 'til you go"
He sent me a wink as he sang that part and I rolled my eyes with a smile
"And if all your kisses turn into bruises, I'm a warnin'"
"Let's fall in love for the night
And forget in the mornin'"
The song slowed a bit and Mark quieted down a little while he sang
"Play me a song that you like
You can bet I'll know every line"
"Cause I'm the boy that your boy hoped that you would avoid
Don't waste your eyes on jealous guys, fuck that noise"
I was surprised at how high his voice could go but I just melted at the sound of it, my entire body felt nice and warm and I felt so safe in his presence
"I know better
I know better
I know better than to ever call you mine"
He sang finishing the song
Everyone clapped and Mark looked surprised like he'd expected us to not like it
He looked over to me and I sent him a warm smile he relaxed and smiled back.
