My breath hitched in my throat and my heart seemed to stop, I rushed through the building looking for a window or something to look out of
I came across a boarded up window that had enough of a gap between the wood to see out of it, when I looked out of the window my eyes widened and I slapped my hand over my mouth, muffling a sob
One of the Scales held the back of Marks shirt, lifting him up off the ground as he talked to his friends, Mark was not moving he seemed lifeless, his head was held low and his arms swung limply to his sides
I also noticed blood gushing out of a wound on his chest, soaking his once grey shirt into a dark crimson one
" what happened to keeping them alive?"
Another of the Scales questioned, rage bubbled inside me as tears threatened to spill, it took everything in me to not run out there and tear the man holding him up apart but that would only be a suicide mission as there were so many Scales and only one of me
" he was running! what else was I supposed to do? let him go?"
The other one argued his point causing the other scale to sigh
" any sight on the little one?"
The same Scale questioned to which everyone shook their head
"okay, well lets go then"
The man holding Mark threw his lifeless body to the side before hoping on one of the horses and heading out with the rest, I waited a second before quickly shoving the dresser out of the way and running to Marks body
My heart thumped loudly in my ears as I neared his body, tears came rushing out of my eyes like a waterfall as i crouched down beside him, I held his hand and pressed my ear against his blood soaked shirt
"Mark please, don't do this to me"
I begged a sob escaping my mouth as I listened closely, my hope began to fade until I heard the faintest thud
"oh thank goodness, Mark please come back, don't give up"
I spoke to him as I cut his shirt off with my knife, knowing if i didn't work fast enough that he wouldn't make it, the sound of distant squeals pulled me out of my concentration
"fuck not now!"
I grumbled turning back to Mark
"this might hurt"
I told him even though he probably couldn't hear me, I slid my arms under him lifting him up bridle style with a huff, he was quite bigger than me but I only struggled a little bit as I walked us to the building I hid in originally
I walked inside and sat him on the floor, I would find him some blankets to lay on later but I needed to make sure nothing was gonna get in first, I walked back to the door and shoved the dresser back in front of it
I gave the door a pull making sure it would hold before making my way around the house making sure there was no other way for something to get in. I made my way back to Mark and crouched down beside him to examine his wound
He got shot by a fairly powerful gun yet I couldn't tell which type, it passed right through his chest, luckily it didn't go through his heart but it went right through the middle of his chest, I couldn't tell if it had hit any internal organs
I shown my flashlight in the wound, not finding a bullet cause it went all the way through but there were metal shards in there that I would have to extract
Every few seconds I would pause to watch his chest, making sure it was still moving, I pushed the fear of finding it not moving to the back of my mind as i fully engrossed myself in patching him up
I then realized i didn't have my bag
"fuck!"
I yelled quite loudly, a small whimper escaped my lips as I looked around the house, checking any drawers I could find but not having much luck, I found a washcloth and rubbing alcohol in the bathroom but i did't find anything else
I rushed back to Mark and poured some of the rubbing alcohol on the washcloth, I took a hold of his hand which was quite cold and rubbed the area of the wound with the washcloth
anything at all would help until i could go back and get our bags, at least it has a lower chance of getting infected now
after I finished I used his shirt that I cut off him to wrap around the wound, I then went on a mission to find some blankets, I wandered to a door that was locked and pushed on it a few times, after not being able to open it I stepped back and raised my leg, slamming my foot into the door repetitively until it broke off the hinges
I walked inside the room, it was a bedroom that looked like it hadn't been disturbed since the apocalypse began, a smile spread across my face
" finally something goes right"
I made my way back to Mark and lifted him up carefully, bringing him to the bedroom and setting him on the bed, covering him with the blankets and making sure his "bandage" was gonna stay
I stood back and watched his chest rise and fall faintly before leaning in the doorway and talking to him
" sorry that you don't get a door, I know you like your privacy but its better than nothing"
I was met with silence but watching his breathing reminded me he was still here with me, a book on one of the shelves in the room caught my eye
I made my way over to it and picked it up examining the cover before speaking again
"hey look Mark, a joke book, wanna hear some?"
I asked, opening the book and flipping to a random page
"ah here's one" I cleared my throat before reading it " what washes up on really small beaches? Micro-waves"
I chuckled
"that's so dumb, okay one more"
"What happened when the blue ship and the red ship collided at sea? Their crews were marooned"
I groaned and shut the book
" yeah were done with that"
I set the book back down on the shelf and walked next to the bed where Mark was laying, I looked at the wound and felt the same anger from earlier
" don't worry, they'll pay for this, Every last one of them"
I was pulled out of the moment when i heard squeals outside.
