(Request from Tumblr: Can you write a one shot where the reader is transported to Middle earth and she's travelling with the company. One of the company members here her singing and when they reach Rivendell they persuade her to sing and when she does everyone there is just shocked.

Author's Notes: Hiiiiii 💕 I really liked writing for this, hope this is okay! Was also about to record myself singing Far Over The Misty Mountains but I cannot for the life of me get the notes right hnnghhh

This is not a headcanon, more like one-shot thingy)

You sat in another room that was occupied by Bilbo earlier. He had gone to bed and you were left by the fire, alone in your thoughts. It was strange and certainly mind-boggling to think that you were going on a journey with people you've only read from books. The fear of failing everyone was there for many have voiced that you were just going to be a nuisance despite the protests of Gandalf. But nevertheless you were indeed excited.

As you watched the fire dance, a deep voice started to hum. It was then followed by another and the voices left you in awe.

"Far over the Misty Mountains cold,

To dungeons deep and caverns old,

We must away, ere break of day,

To find our long-forgotten gold..."

It was a song you have already heard a couple of times and a song you have always loved. The message it contained moved your heart for it told the history and the reason for this quest. It also nearly moved you to tears for you knew what was going to happen at the end of it. The pain of not knowing whether to try and prevent the deaths or let what was written happen affected you so much.

While they sang, you hummed along, trying to remember the tune and every word they had uttered.

The song was stuck in your head for quite some time and along the way you could not help but sing it softly. Whether you were gathering wood for fire or taking care of the ponies, you would let the tune escape your lips. Of course you would do so with a controlled voice because you were afraid that singing their song was something you should not have done.

But your doubts melted away when you were caught by Balin. You were gathering water from a nearby river and because you were alone you thought it'd be nice to sing. After singing a few other songs you liked, you went back to singing Far Over The Misty Mountains Cold.

"You have a fine voice," Balin praised, and you nearly jumped into the river in surprise. He chuckled and helped you in your chore. "It is nice to hear you sing it."

You smiled and said thank you before asking, "It is alright for me to sing it?"

"Of course it is. Why would it not be?"

"Well..."

Balin chuckled and turned to you. "You are entitled to sing such song for you are helping us reclaim our home. Despite what the company says, you are still determined to see this through. You are filled with courage even if you think you are weak."

A genuine smile found its way to your lips and you found yourself warming up to the dwarf. It was the first time you had felt close to someone. Everyone was very nice but you still felt like an outsider. Having someone assure you was something you didn't think you needed to hear and you are grateful for his words.

For some reason after that encounter with Balin, the song was now gone from your mind. It didn't constantly play in your head all day. Maybe it was because you were all busy running for your lives from orcs that had managed to hunt you all down.

And maybe it was because you were amazed by how Rivendell looked.

The movies captured it's essence but the Rivendell you see in front of you was much more majestic and ethereal looking.

Also maybe it was because of the second hand embarrassment and amusement you were feeling as you sat there with the dwarves while they cause a scene during a meal.

They had jumped on the table, questioned the existence of vegetables, laughed in their loud voices, and brought out their instruments because according to them elvish music was too tame and not really music.

You kept quiet because you actually liked both elvish and dwarvish music and liked vegetables and meat (sometimes it's better to keep quiet when you have an opinion). But you let yourself laugh and clap when they started to dance and have more fun and when you saw the disgruntled looks the elves made. It was very amusing and you were left giggling while munching on a lettuce. When their song died down, you thought they would just continue to complain and eventually retire for the night.

You didn't expect Thorin to ask you to sing.

"You've been enjoying the show, (Y/N)," Kili said.

"It is only fair that you sing too!" Bofur said.

The rest of the company started to agree and Bilbo and Gandalf and even Elrond looked expectantly at you. You were trying to decline and find a way to escape but Balin smiled at you and said, "It's alright, lass. Just sing whatever you want."

You sighed. There was no way out of this. You went through the songs you knew by heart, trying to pick something short.

Then their song began to play in your mind again.

With one last look at Balin, you took a deep breath and started to sing.

"Far over the Misty Mountains cold,

To dungeons deep and caverns old,

We must away, ere break of day,

To find our long-forgotten gold...

The pines were roaring on the height,

The winds were moaning in the night,

The fire was red, it flaming spread,

The trees like torches blazed with light..."

You had tried to look at one spot in the distance to avoid their gazes. Despite Balin's words, you still didn't know how Thorin and the others felt about you singing such an important song to them. You had also changed a few notes in the song. But when you finished the song and looked at the eyes of your listeners, you found that the elves were looking at you in awe. Even Bilbo was amazed and Gandalf and Elrond had smiles on their faces.

But what caught you offguard was how the dwarves had tears in their eyes.

"I am feeling quite emotional today," Kili muttered, wiping away his tears. "Come here, (Y/N). You must pay for making me cry."

"What?"

Before you could let his words sink in, Kili had walked up to you and embraced you. Soon it wasn't just Kili—Fili and Bofur and Gloin and the others joined in on your group hug.

You laughed and shouted for help. Thorin came to the rescue by lending a hand to pull you up but the moment you were free from the others, Thorin embraced you.

Before you could ask what it was for, Thorin whispered something in your ear before letting you go.

"Thank you," he had whispered.
