"I just- I can't do it anymore."

"What do you mean?"

Christina stares at me, confusion clouding her expression.

"I mean I can't do this."

I gesture wildly around at the room.

Christina tilts her head slightly, her brow furrowed.

"I don't understand. You can't- what- sit in this room?"

She chuckles to herself, the corners of her mouth twitching.

"Life," I say simply. "I can't do it anymore."

A sudden flash of realization crosses Christina's face. Her smile drops, replaced with an expression that can only be labeled as 'intense concern.'

She finally understands. Why did I tell her anything?

I stand up to leave the room.

"Sorry, that was too much," I say as I slowly back away.

Her hand shoots out and grabs my wrist, pulling me back down to the ground.

"No, we need to talk. Are you really serious?"

Her voice is low and urgent.

"Are you?"

She stares into me, her eyes pooling with a warm, sweet sort of comfort.

I shake myself out, leaning away from her gaze.

"Maybe," I say, giving her a noncommittal shrug. "Maybe not."

"Laur-"

Christina reaches towards me.

"I'm fine."

My voice breaks in the middle.

"I mean, I'm fine."

This time I make sure my voice is clear, strong and unwavering.

"Oh, Lauren," Christina says, her words filled with empathy.

"Oh, Lauren," she says again.

Of course she saw right through it. Who wouldn't, to be honest?

Christina leans over and pulls me into a tight embrace.

"I love you," she whispers, her warm breath tickling my skin. "I love you so much. You deserve the whole world, you know that?"

I fall into her hug.

"I'm sorry, Chris. I-I wasn't thinking clearly."

Lies, of course. But I need to throw her off my scent. Another slip-up like that and I'll be carted off to therapy.

Christina squeezes me tighter. It feels as if she'll never let go.
