I am cursed to hear the voices of the dead. I am able to hear them, but I don't know if I can talk to them. But I am not the only one who is cursed, though. My best friend and next door neighbor, Dylan, is cursed to be a hawk or a wolf all day, only becoming human at night. He also has a hard time remembering to change back into a human, as his animal instincts kick in, and it is hard for him to gather his mind.

Dylan and I also don't know who did this to us either. The curses were just laid on us, and we don't know who it was that made them. It could be two separate people for all we know.

But to the present.

Dylan sits at the table in my apartment next to his, and he is trying to talk to me about the curses.

"I'm just ... I don't know. Scared."

"Why?" I ask, as I'm cooking dinner for him. I forced him to sit at the table, as I want to make sure he is getting rest and food.

"I just am scared of not becoming human again," he says. "I mean, what if I morph into my wolf form, lose my humanity, and never remember to come back?"

"That won't happen."

"Really? You don't know that, Kaia," he says.

You know nothing, Kaia.

I ignore the dead voices.

"Don't I? Dylan, promise me here and now, that you will do your best to always come back to me, and I will promise to come back to you, too," I say.

"You mean if I don't find you, you'll find me?"

"Yes," I say. "I know that you think that you will eventually be lost to me, but I don't believe that. You're my best friend and I know I will see you again."

He wipes his eyes. "Kaia, I just don't know what I'd do without you."

"You'd crash and burn," I tease.

But he just nods. I serve the food I've made to him, and he and I stay up late into the night, talking to each other and talking about everything in the world we can talk about. But we don't mention our curses.

The next morning, I wake up and see him in his hawk form on the ledge of my window.

"I'm going to find a way to save us," I promise him. "I'm gonna break the curses. Somehow."

I then get up and start my day.
