When my vision blurs, as I step through the portal, feeling like I'm walking in waist-deep warm water, I find myself blinking like crazy. Then we emerge into the other side of the portal, Wisteria and Dylan beside me. We stand in front of a large arena type area.
"What is this place?" Dylan asks.
"This is where you two will decide how to break your curse," a young girl's voice says.
We turn around and I gasp. She is the spitting image of ten year old me. The little girl wears a simple blue dress and her auburn hair is tied in a ponytail, and then her bright hazel eyes fix on me.
"Hello, Kaia, recognize me?"
"Of course," I say. I look up at Dylan. "She's me."
"Follow me," she says.
We walk down into the arena, where the ground is loose dirt, and there I see a large group of creatures. Demons. I know that without a doubt.
"This is the place where we part
Any questions before I depart?"Dylan and I turn to Wisteria.
"How do we get back home?" I ask.
"I will take you," says Little Me.
"Okay. Um, do you think we will be able to break this curse? Like, so you have any faith in us?" I ask.
She cocks her head to the side. "What a strange question, strange indeed ..."
Little Me turns and looks at us. The demons off to the side all look up at us. I tense, and Dylan squeezes my hand slightly, and I feel a little better.
But then, Wisteria is gone, and Little Me looks up at me. She gestures behind herself and says, "You must save her. Because she saved you. Will you save her, Prince Charming?"
"Of course I will," Dylan says. "What do I have to do?"
"We will do a ritual, a Blood Ritual," Little Me says. "I will bind you to each other."
"What? What will that do?" I ask.
"Binding you will link you two telepathically. The two of you will be able to live without the burden of the voices, all you have to do is obey what I say during the ritual. Then, the only voices you hear are your own and his."
"What about the woman Talia? The one who cursed us? She can just do it again."
"No, she won't," says Little Me. "No one can curse you again after I bind you. Now, any more questions?"
"I have one but it's kinda insensitive."
"Ask, Dylan," she says.
"What exactly are you? A Faerie? An angel?"
She smiles. "No. I'm neither, I'm a spirit. Well, I mean, I suppose I am technically an angel." She shrugs. "Good question."
She claps her hands together, and then the world around us shifts and I see her walk over to an altar where she places her hands, and then she speaks in another language. She raises her head and turns around, looking at Dylan and I.
"Here," she says, handing a knife to Dylan. "Prick your finger on the knife, then hand it to me. Then you have to do it too, Kaia."
Dylan nods and braces himself. He cuts his finger and then hands the knife back to Little Me. She hands me another knife, and I prick my finger on it, then she takes it again.
She begins to chant in another language, and she walks around the altar, where items are appearing from thin air. She sets the knives down and then turns around and raises her hands, creating a blood red shield around us.
Just then, the demons on the other side of the shield clash against the side of the shield, and I flinch. Dylan wraps an arm around me protectively.
I grip his hand tighter for similar assurances.
"Here they come," Little Me says, and then she raises both bloodied knives, and brings her hands together. The shield around her falls, and the demons converge on her.
I gasp and Dylan shields my eyes with his body. No. That's not quite right.
Because seconds later, his body jerks sharply, and then a massive spike thing sticks out of his chest. I scream, but it's from a terrible pain that explodes in my chest. I am in pain and shock, and then I sink to the ground beside him, wrapping my arms around his head and shoulders. If this is it, I am going to go down kicking and screaming.
The huge, all black scorpion like thing advances on me and brandishes its massive claws in front of me. Then, there is a huge flash of red light, and I lean towards Dylan, hunching over him and shielding him from the light.
It fades, and then, when the dust settles, I see Little Me running over to us. She crouched beside me.
"We have to help him," I say, realising then that I am coated in his blood. I hold him in my lap, trying to make sure his wound is off the ground, but it's hard.
"Can you feel it?" she asks me.
I look up at Little Me, and see she's looking right at me. She presses her hand against Dylan's bleeding chest and I watch in wonder as she heals the wound. It doesn't close the whole way, though, and she stops after a moment, gasping.
"What's wrong? Why isn't it working?" I ask.
She looks at him and then back to me. "I think you can heal him, Kaia."
"Me? How?"
"You love him more than anything else, you cherish him and make him feel like he's invincible. You bring out the best in him, and I think that if you give enough effort, you can do this."
"Please, just tell me what to do," I say.
"Place your hands over his wound. There you go ... Now, clear your mind and focus on what you want to happen. Do you wish to heal him?"
"Of course I do," I say.
"Very well, then close your eyes and focus on him. Whatever you want to think about, as long as it makes you think of him, do it."
I close my eyes. And then I feel it. Our connection to each other. Me and Dylan, existing at the same moment in time, both of us healthy and whole again. I'm taken aback by the intense feelings overwhelming me. I stay as still as I can, as the connection between us grows stronger.
Then, I feel like my head is swimmy, and I am disoriented. I gasp as the feeling of raw and powerful emotions floods through me. And then, as I'm sitting and holding Dylan in my arms, the feeling of love that cascades over me is enough to bring me to tears.
Then, I feel like all my energy is simultaneously sapped from me and restored.
"Open your eyes."
I do, and I see Dylan slowly sitting up and looking at me. He's no longer bleeding, and he smiles bright.
"Oh my god, are you okay?" I ask.
He nods. "Yes, I'm fine. It's okay, Kaia. I'm okay."
I feel a cry lurching from deep in my soul, and then I jump over and hug him like I've never hugged him before. He holds me close, and I close my eyes, and then ....
.....
When I wake up, Dylan and I are in bed together, and his one arm is around me. I blink a few times, and look away, turning to look at the door to my room.
Dylan stirs and turns to look me in the eye, and he smiles at me. We have been together for a long time, and today is the day. The day when everything could change. For the better, or maybe even the worst? Who knows. Could be both ....
~ The end ... ? ~
