We finally find a safe place to stay for the rest of the night when we get to Cassie's friend's house. Clay, her friend, comes out from the kitchen and hands me a glass of water. Clay also knows about demons and everything, as he saved Cassie's life once.

It's clear that he has feelings for her, too. Which I find as sweet. Clay sits down beside Cassie and Maya paces back and forth. Dylan is next to me on the couch in the living room.

"Okay, so this is getting bad, really quick," Cassie says. "Do you think we should tell them about this?"

"What?" Clay looks at her. "Cas, we can't just tell them that this is happening. They will freak the hell out."

"Who are you talking about?" Maya asks.

"I'm talking about the other hunters," Cassie says. "You see, there are demon hunters in this world. Has to be, otherwise, well, it'd all go to shit. Well, we found out a long time ago that the other hunters like to freak out about things like this. Luckily for you, Clay and I are professionals."

Clay scoffs and she rolls her eyes at him. Maya stops pacing and looks at us.

"Guys, maybe the kiss didn't work because you don't love each other enough yet," she says. "It would make sense to me, I mean."

"It would?" asks Dylan.

"Yeah, I mean, if you two are now linked inexplicably through the connections you share because of your curses, it would make sense to say that you two are linked."

"Hmm," I mumble, not looking at anything. "Maybe."

"It just might be," Cassie says softly. "I suppose it could also be because you two aren't linked yet but need to be in order for the magick of the kiss to work."

"How do we get more linked though?" Dylan asks.

"Well, I suppose you could always just simply try to get closer to each other. The closer you are, the more powerful the bond. The more powerful the bond, the more powerful the magick."

"Right. So all we have to do is get closer to each other and hope and pray that somehow, some way, something will finally make sense in all this ocean of bullshit that we were thrust into."

Cassie snorts. Clay shakes his head and laughs a little. Maya shifts anxiously from foot to foot, looking all over the room we're in. And Dylan puts a hand on my knee, and that touch keeps me grounded. I look up at him, and see those familiar brown eyes looking back at me.

"You know, I think we could do that kiss a little better," I tease him.

He smiles. "Maybe later."

"Haha, yucky," Cassie says, looking away.
