Levi's Perspective
It's just about eight. The last time I stayed this late at the office was when my housemate decided to have company. Today, I just needed to finish a little extra work. However, a certain someone was clouding my thoughts and I hated it. Every time I read in my head, the whole shenanigan that occurred between Rebecca and I interrupted like a freight train exceeding the speed limit and derailing onto my tracks. Trying to block her out was a lost cause at this point, especially considering she's still here.
"Don't you have somewhere to loathe around?" The day guard's voice mocked from my office room doorway.
I glanced at her, disregarding her comment and continuing with my own work, "Don't you have some other idiot to annoy?"
"Well obviously not," she sat in the chair in front of my desk, "Everyone else is gone."
I may have missed what she said while I was reading, but I didn't really care to listen either. "Try after try, he's ignored but perhaps to be a bit more subtle he'll succeed. Amd when it's well expected, act as if he wasn't trying to show it before."
"Yo! Ackerman!"
I jumped, a little startled, "What the hell! Were you there the whole time?" I asked puzzled.
She looked at me wide-eyed and then began to laugh heavily, "Wow, you're a special one!" She said through a laugh, "You mean I was talking to you this whole time and you didn't hear me?" I shook my head, holding my slightly disturbed yet angry expression.
I sighed, letting my face drop, finding it a little hard to stay mad at her. "Rebecca, can I ask you something?"
She looked up from twiddling with her fingers, "If I say no, you'll still ask so whatever." She said in a breath. I hadn't known how to respond but to ask but just as I was, the question slipped my mind. Instead, I sort of sat there with my mouth gaping dumbly. "You gonna say something or catch flies?"
I felt my face flush, "Never mind..." I said, turning my attention back to the computer screen.
"Are you even working on stuff for your job?" She asked. It's not that I was about to lie that struck me; it's that she asked. She was the one I wanted the least to ask, especially considering who I'm writing about.
"Of course I am." I mumbled, "I'm proofreading something someone sent me."
"But you're in the publishing department?" She retorted. I could see her studying my face through my peripheral.
"One of the editors asked for another set of eyes on the piece." I stuttered out unsurely, secretly praying she'd stop questioning me.
"Which one?" She added.
"How about, why are you still here? Eh, Rebecca?" I said, glaring at her with the angriest expression I could muster.
She smirked, "Don't get prissy because you were caught red handed..." She said, crossing her arms over her chest. "Anyways, the maintenance guy is still here. He's trying to get at least one camera back up for the night so I won't have to substitute."
I focused on my computer screen once again, accepting her response as a sorry excuse. "Then go watch the maint'man instead of me. I can't get any work done with you around."
"Hey, I came over here to keep you company so don't get angry at me." I paused in the middle of my typing, allowing her words to register in my head: she came over to keep me company?
"Is that so?" I questioned, side-eyeing her.
She nodded, "That and his fuckin' asscrack was irritating the hell out'a me."
