Telling a depressed person to be positive is like
Telling an angry bull to not get angry seeing the red cloth during a bull fight

Note:
Being positive isn't a wrong thing. It is good instead. But when people are broken down, depressed or very sad/angry, telling them to be happy/positive seems offensive often. Because, if they had something to be happy about they won't be depressed.

Depressed people do not need people to tell them to be positive, bla bla. They need mental support; they need someone to give them honest care, affection and friendly support. They need to have someone to talk with or rant to, they need someone who will listen to them willingly and also support their side and do something to make them happy. Encouraging or motivating words(not directly, but in a friendly and cheerful manner) can help them too.
