I wasn't courageous. At least, I never wanted to be. My dad taught me that there was a difference between courage and stupidity. This, he might have categorized as stupidity.
Yet, this is definitely something dad would do.
I thought of all the reasons I shouldn't try this. All the reasons I could die, or seriously hurt myself or possibly others. There are a million reasons NOT to do something. But I only needed one good reason to give it a shot.
My reason: I wanted excitement. I wanted to give a gift to a friend. I wanted to let go and actually have fun. I didn't have my dad around to supervise me. I felt like a little kid that was left home alone, which I suppose I was.
I closed my eyes, imprinting my map into my brain. Where I would go, how I would get there. I sighed, trying to keep my heart rate steady. I peeled open my eyes, and was ready. Quickly, I sprinted towards the edge and jumped off the the roof, webs ready to launch.
I launched the first web to the building across on the left side, which swung me swiftly around it, to where I webbed the right side and launched myself upwards onto the top of that building. I felt an adrenaline smile run through me. This was incredible!! The wind and the excitement. I closed my eyes for a moment so I could take it in before I landed. I opened them back to see that I had gone a little higher than I wanted to. Shit. I thought ran through my brain.
How was I going to land?
My body was hurling down towards the concrete roof, and I didn't have a plan. I quickly shot a web to a higher building on the side, but miscalculated and almost ran straight into it. I kept trying to web myself around, but was missing all the important points. I found myself twisting and turning in different directions, before I felt gravity shift, and I had webbed myself against the walls, upside down.
The ground below me was far, and I couldn't get free. As much as I moved, I couldn't deactivate the webs. Even if I did, I wouldn't have enough time to get myself out of there. I tried not to panic, and instead pleaded that I could reach the button and save myself in time.
That's when, of course, I heard other webbing getting closer and closer until the red masked hero came into view. Shit. He somehow scaled the wall and stuck next to me.
"What the hell happened?" he asked, very confused.
"Uh. Well. I tried to make you something. You know, as a thank you gift. But then, the test runs didn't turn out so well," I admitted. He laughed a little.
"You have a nag for getting yourself in trouble," he chuckled.
"Yeah, yeah. I can try to deactivate the webs, but I then I'll just slide down to my doom," I explained.
"Here, I'll catch you. Go for it," he said, bracing himself.
"What?! Are you crazy?!" I exclaimed. I felt blood rushing to my ponytail.
"It's alright. I promise I won't let you fall," he swore. I took a deep breath and pushed the button.
I felt myself get let free from the webs, as gravity took place again. My body fell limp down towards the ground at a high rate. I felt a strong arm wrap around me and lift me towards the roof of the building. I held tightly to the webbed hero, as I buried my head in his neck. He stopped and put me down on the concrete.
"I'm not going to tell you how stupid that was of you to do, cause I'm sure you already know," he said, a hint of sass in his voice. I threw myself to a lying down position on the roof.
"I know, I know. I just wanted some excitement. And, I wanted to thank you by creating something. I did work. I just, don't know how you do it," I admitted, staring at the few stars in the sky.
Spider-Man leaned over me and offered a hand.
"Thank you. It does seem to work pretty well. How did you make this?" he said. I smiled and took his hand as he pulled me up.
"I know a thing or two about science and technology," I stated proudly. He chuckled.
"But hey. One of these times I might not be here to save you," he said lightly, but heartfelt. I looked down.
"I keep hoping I can save myself," I admitted.
"I swear, if you could enforce it, you wouldn't even let me walk with help," I joked, as I walked over to the edge of the building and plopped myself down.
"If it was dangerous, you better believe I'd carry you everywhere," he said, plopping down next to me. I blushed a bit.
"Thanks," I said quietly.
"Yeah, uh, no problem. Just doing my job," he said, leaning back on his hands.
"Why do you do this job?" I asked, looking at him. He looked back at me.
"Well, when you can do the things that I can, but you don't, and then the bad things happen? They happen because of you," he said, slouching forward.
"Wow. That's...that's a good reason," I said, chuckling. He did too.
"Here I'll take you back to your apartment since I don't trust that you will get back there on your own," he said, getting up and lending me a hand. I gave him a look.
"...without getting into trouble," he finished as I took his hand and he hoisted me up. I wrapped my arms around his neck and he swung off towards the fire escape on my building. Once he landed, I slid off him and opened my window.
"Thank you," I smiled. He rubbed the back of his neck.
"Hey, I'm taking the rest of the night off, so don't go doing anymore crazy shit. I won't be able to protect you Y/N," he said before swinging off.
I began to climb through my window, before...wait. He knows my name?
