“You ready to go?” Phil smiled as he straightened out his button up shirt. Dan rushed his hand through his hair one more time before nodding and hopping up, grabbing hold of Phil’s arm.
The two of them headed down to the back of the hotel where the pool was located. Phil was surprised nobody was in the pool since most of the students were there. Instead, all of the people there were on the field, relaxing on picnic blankets under the night sky, sitting around the campfire drinking ‘punch’, or skinny dipping in the lake.
“Phil!” Dan heard Carrie’s voice from a distance and bit his tongue to prevent himself from groaning. If it wasn’t already obvious, Dan was jealous of Carrie. But, it wasn’t even jealousy that was getting to him anymore; Carrie was just flat out annoying. He could finally see where PJ was coming from when he talked about her.
“We don’t have to go over,” Phil interrupted Dan’s thoughts and he smiled at the thought of him caring about what Dan wanted to do instead of just what he wanted to do. He was just about to take his suggestion and ask to go as far away from Carrie as possible but he knew that was extremely selfish so he shook his head.
“It’s fine,” Dan said casually, “Besides, I don’t think she’d get on my nerves so much once I’m drunk.” Phil turned to Dan to see his cocky expression and smiled lightly. “So, we’re drinking tonight?” he asked and Dan shrugged. “Try new things,” he smirked before pulling Phil’s arm so he’d start walking.
When they got to the fire Carrie was sitting at and Phil helped Dan sit down, Carrie immediately launched herself at Phil. She practically tackled him as she wrapped her arms around his neck and sat on his lap. “I’ve missed you Philly,” she cooed and Dan began to feel his face burn up.
“I just saw you two nights ago, Carrie,” Phil said in an unamused tone causing Dan to raise his eyebrows. Didn’t Phil say he didn’t remember anything from that day? Did he lie? If he did, did it mean he lied about the party as well? Did Phil remember him kissing Dan?
Dan shook his head and sighed a bit too loudly causing Phil to turn towards him with an upset expression. He quickly lifted Carrie off of him and slid over to him. “Hey, what’s wrong?” he asked and Dan shook his head. “Just a bit bored,” he mumbled and Phil nodded, not knowing what to say.
He looked around before spotting PJ, sitting across the fire on his own. “I know something that could occupy you,” Phil suggested, “PJ’s sitting right over there. Why don’t you go talk to him?” Dan quickly shook his head but it was too late, Phil was already calling him over.
“What?” PJ muttered as he walked over to the two of them. Dan gulped as he heard the boy’s unpleasant tone. “Nothing,” Phil got up, “Dan wants to talk to you.” He flashed a quick grin before reluctantly heading back to Carrie, knowing it was the only other reason to give Dan and PJ their space.
Dan played with his hands as he heard PJ sit down next to him. He felt his eyes on him and he turned his head down, not being able to look up. “What did you want to tell me?” PJ asked sounding very uninterested and pretty pissed off, causing Dan to get even more nervous.
“I, uh,” Dan stammered, “I do--”
“I think I’m just going to head back to where I was before,” PJ pushed himself off the ground and began to walk away before Dan shouted. “No, Peej wait,” he called and PJ stopped in his place before sighing and sitting back down.
