Swiftstream lifted her head as she heard the howl of Woolly Howl. "Woolly Howl," she breathed in shock as her heart thumped in her chest. "Stormchaser! Darkflight!"

"This way," yowled Skypacer as she took to the air, her four wings flapping in the air. Swiftstream took after her and felt her whole body freezing. She couldn't let anything happen to her children, especially after what happened to Deathwhisper.

Swiftstream took the lead with her Night Fury speed and saw the fire burning from the Woolly Howl's mouth. She lowered down with her wings braced over a river and her head lowered. She looked calm and collected but secretly she was about to explode toward the Woolly Howl.

"Mom," cried Stormchaser from behind the rock, her eyes pleading.

The Woolly Howl stopped it's fire breath and turned to Swiftstream with amusement gleaming in his eyes. "A Night Fury? You must be these scraps' mother."

"Yes I am," growled Swiftstream as she twitched her tail irritably. "Now let them go or you'll be sorry!"

The Woolly Howl laughed. "No one takes on Clawface and survives." As Stormchaser looked over the rock she saw that this dragon's face was covered in scars. Some were long and some were just holes in his scales. She couldn't imagine where a dragon could get that many scars.

"Don't underestimate me," challenged Swiftstream. "I'm a Night Fury."

Clawface just snorted in laughter. "We'll see about that, Night Fury."

With a cry Swiftstream surged forward. She lunged for Clawface's neck and sunk her teeth into his throat. However his scales were especially thick there and she barely made a dent. Clawface just snickered and thundered a kick hard in Swiftstream's face. She fell to the ground while Darkflight and Stormchaser crouched behind the rock, whimpering.

Swiftstream pushed herself back to her paws. Her tail plashed into the stream behind her and that gave her idea. When Clawface charged she lowered down so that he tripped over her. She pushed up right at the right heartbeat and Clawface plunged head first into the stream. She then leaped on his shoulders and shoved his head under the water. Bubbles came up from the water but Swiftstream didn't let up.

"Let us help," cried Darkflight as he bounded to the edge of the stream, his sister trailing.

"Stay back," ordered Swiftstream before Clawface exploded upward and threw Swiftstream under him. He placed his full weight on her shoulders and forced her head under water. Swiftstream tried to curl her tail around Clawface's tail to thrust him under but he was expecting that so he pinned her tail down to the sediment floor with his own tail.

"Mom," wailed Stormchaser as she saw her mother thrashing under Clawface's hold.

Clawface looked to them and chuckled. "Watch your mother fall like all Night Furies before her."

"I don't think so!"

Clawface looked up and saw Skypacer descending on him. She sunk her front claws into his shoulder and flipped him off of Swiftstream. Swiftstream's head broke the surface and she coughed up mouthfuls of water. "Thanks," she sputtered to her friend as water streamed from her mouth.

Skypacer dipped her head before she threw her tail against Clawface's face, giving him yet another scar. This was was left by a Stormcutter. Blood dripped into the water and pain shown in his eyes.

Skypacer leaped back and braced herself in front of Swiftstream, Darkflight, and Stormchaser. "Leave Clawface and I might let you life."

Clawface looked up with rage in his eyes. "You haven't seem the last of me!" With that he turned and shook the water from his wings before taking to the sky with a monstrous howl.

Skypacer then nudged Swiftstream gingerly up the bank before she hauled herself onto the back, shaking water droplets from her scales. "Mother," breathed Stormchaser as she bounded to her mother's side with Darkflight right beside her.

Swiftstream looked to them but anger glittered in her eyes. "What did I tell you," she snapped at them as she opened her mouth to reveal her teeth.

"What do you mean," asked Darkflight as he tilted his head in confusion.

"Sniff the air," ordered Swiftstream as the spikes on her back lifted a bit to show how truly angry she was.

Reluctantly Darkflight and Stormchaser sniffed the air. When they detected the scent they drew back. "What do you smell," asked Skypacer as she looked at both young ones.

"Woolly Howl," they answered in unison.

Swiftstream gave a curt nod. "Yes there may not be a lot of them but there are more of them than Night Furies and they control this section of the forest. Didn't you smell it when you crossed the border?"

"I'm sorry," apologized Stormchaser quickly. "We just were having too much fun and-"

"What happened to everything I've taught you," Swiftstream cut in as she started at her daughter and son in disappointment. "What would have happened if I would have lost you two?"

Darkflight looked at his paws and narrowed his eyes a bit. "I don't know. Had more Night Furies with another mate."

Swiftstream's jaw dropped. "I would never do that," assured Swiftstream quickly. "Number one there aren't any other Night Furies around that I can tell. Second you two are my only ones. And third I only loved your father."

"So that's why you let him die," asked Darkflight as he lifted his head and narrowed his eyes.

Swiftstream thrust her head toward her son's. "I did not let him die. The vikings killed him Darkflight! I had nothing to do with it."

"You should have been able to save him," cried Darkflight as his body shook. "You were supposed to protect him too."

Swiftstream shook her head gravely. "I couldn't. I tried my best but-"

"But your best wasn't good enough," finished Stormchaser as she hung her head.

"That's right," muttered Darkflight as he looked to his sister. "She couldn't save him."

"I tried my best," Swiftstream yowled as her spines shone on her back. "Now he's gone and all you have is me!"

"Then I wish dad was here instead of you," snarled Darkflight before the whole forest seemed to silence around them.

Swiftstream stood rigid and watched as Darkflight turned and bolted away from her. Stormchaser frowned and looked to her brother. "Darkflight! Darkflight wait!"

Swiftstream went to surge after them but Skypacer stepped in front of her to block her path. "You better not," she urged as she pushed Swiftstream toward their den.

Swiftstream pushed away from her friend. "I can't just leave them out there! Didn't you see what just happened when we let them go off?"

"Yeah but they just need some time," breathed Skypacer gently. "Let them be."

Swiftstream frowned before nodding reluctantly. "If you say so. I'll give them until nightfall before I go after them." She turned and closed her eyes, praying that everything would be alright.
