A half a moon later it was early in the morning and Stormchaser was curled protectively around her three eggs. Thunderheart was right around her, his larger body shadowing her. She was in a light sleep with her tail gingerly stroking over one of her eggs. She suddenly felt it move. Her head darted upward and she thrust her head backwards and hit Thunderheart in the neck.
Thunderheart growled a bit before he shook his head to clear it. "What," he whispered breathlessly. "I was actually having a good dream."
"Look," gasped Stormchaser as she allowed Thunderheart to see around her head. "I think they're hatching."
Thunderheart's heart thumped in his chest. He looked down and saw one of the eggs shaking madly. It wasn't long before a head popped out of the leg. The egg fell on it's side and the baby Night Fury fell from the egg, shell fragments crumbling around it. It looked upward and let out a cry.
Stormchaser stretched out her tail and drew the baby near. "It'll alright little one," chided Stormchaser affectionately.
Thunderheart pushed his head against his mate's shoulder before she looked over to the next egg. It quivered before it began to crack and a paw shot out, feeling around on the ground. Then it's head poked out before the rest of the dragon fell out. It growled in anger when it couldn't dislodge it's tail. He pushed forward and Thunderheart rolled his eyes a bit. He lowered his head and cracked the rest of the shell from the dragon.
The Night Fury fell on it's back and pawed at the ground. Thunderheart continued chuckling at his offspring but Stormchaser's eyes were on the last egg. It hadn't even shook or made any motion that it was going to hatch or even move. She stretched out her nose and moved it but it just plopped over and tears filled her eyes.
"It's not going to hatch," confessed Thunderheart as he turned his head and licked Stormchaser's cheek. "It was born never to hatch. I'm so sorry."
Stormchaser let out a groan of grief and felt as if her heart was being wrenched from her chest. Thunderheart wrapped his tail around his mate and tried his best to comfort her. He then looked to the two baby dragons. "How about we name our other ones," he suggested as he tried to steer her toward the two alive dragons. "They need to be named."
Stormchaser composed herself and looked to the two dragons that were alive and rolling around a bit. Stormchaser sniffed and flicked the tears away before nodding. "Yes that's a good idea." She turned her head and looked to her daughter and son, romping around since they had large heads and tiny legs.
Thunderheart picked up his daughter by her neck and set her down gingerly. She let out a loud cry and Thunderheartt retracted and looked to his mate with gleaming eyes. "She's powerful! Just like a real Night Fury!"
Stormchaser thought for a heartbeat. "How about Lightningflash," she suggested as she looked to her mate and tilted her head hopefully.
Thunderheart rumbled in his throat. "I love it! It's perfect, just like you." He curled his tail around Stormchaser before looking to the other dragon. "I want him to be named after you." He thought for another heartbeat, his eyes unreadable. "How about Rainchaser?"
Stormchaser smiled broadly. "It's perfect for him." She gazed at Lightningflash and Rainchaser. The two began to tackle each other and they chuckled in amusement when one of the fell over.
However sadness still crashed over Stormchaser for the egg that hadn't hatched. "May we name him too," she asked hopefully.
Thunderheart nodded slowly. "Sure. What do you want to name him?"
Stormchaser stretched out her neck and touched her nose to the egg's shell. "I'd like to name him Gentlewhisper, after my father," she breathed after a heartbeat of thinking.
