"Yea, I know." Axel ran in. Chandler followed and Claudia got out of the car.
"Melinda, can you come where I can see you?" Axel peeped his head out the door.
Melinda ran in, staying close to Axel.
Emiliano stopped Sheila, "what's going on?"
"There has been a spread of disease, sir, stay indoors or head for San Francisco. There you will find food, shelter and protection until this blows off in a few weeks."
Axel came out, "I'm glad they had backpacks. Hey, we can use a ride to Frisco."
"It's a small truck, I'm so sorry." Emiliano got in his truck.
Axel frowned, "how about you, officer? For the children, at least."
"I can take three."
Melinda looked at Axel.
"Y'all go on." Axel said.
"Axel, no. You saved me-"
"No, I just helped. There's a difference."
"I'm not leaving you to die."
"Who said I'm gonna die? Nobody cares for me and I've lasted this long."
"This is different."
"I don't know you and you don't know me. Let's keep it that way, eh? Go on. For the kids. Now."
The three got in the car and Anne said, "I can squeeze in the middle, sir."
Axel smiled, "no. That's fine. One less mouth to feed. Go on your way."
Axel walked away.
Why did he walk away? There and then. Just like that? Melinda couldn't get him out of her head. Yea, he didn't know her but he protected her. She didn't know him but she offered him food. She felt something.
She got out of the car and chased after him.
He turned around.
"I'm not leaving you."
"You're mighty nice, Melinda."
Zombies were trying to get in the car so Sheila drove away.
"You can't just leave them!" Anne argued.
"They'll do just fine on their own! San Francisco is a long drive away!"
The two stayed quiet.
"Thank you." Chandler said. "I'm Chandler. This is my little sister Anne and my brother Joey--" he paused.
"There's only two of you."
"This is my sister Anne. They got Joey."
"I'm sorry for your loss."
"That's all right."
"I'm Officer Chris."
"You're no longer an officer. I've read books like this. Mother Earth brought this upon us to reunite the people and take all the bad people away." Chandler said, zoning out.
"He's a science fiction geek."
Chandler smiled and turned away.
"You should get a knife, a bat, a shovel. Something." Axel told Melinda, giving her his knife.
Emiliano passed by, "still need a ride? I can fit two in the back but not four."
"Yes. hold on a minute." Axel ran and got some sharp items.
He got in the truck with three rakes, four knives, two shovels, a bat, a pole and a flashlight.
Melinda stared at him in amazement. "How'd you get all that so fast?"
"Let's just say I have a stash." He winked.
"Thank you, sir-" Axel began but was interrupted.
"I'm Emiliano. Call me Emilio or Emil. This is my granddaughter Claudia."
"I'm Axel and this is Melinda."
"Isn't she your girlfriend?" Claudia asked.
Melinda blushed bright red.
"I'll take that as a 'no'."
Melinda turned to Axel. He seemed to be more embarrassed.
Melinda smiled a little.
"We - we ought to head for Frisco. That's where we're going, right, Emil?"
"Right, Axel."
"Just making sure."
Emil followed Sheila.
There were tons of cars on the road.
"Lucio, did you see that man eating the rat?!"
"I told you."
"You didn't tell me nothing!"
"The dead are rising and eating us!"
"You mean zombies?"
"I know it sounds stupid-"
"Loco Lucio. Now I get it."
Alison was driving to San Francisco, along with hundreds more.
"Moooom! Why is there so much traffic?"
"People are trying to get to safety."
"Ugh. Well, at least Richie is dead."
Roberto was on the road along with the rest of the population is what it looked like.
Micael, Julian, Tina and Anita went outside.
Augustine was asleep and Roberto had to be there, ready to drive if anything happened.
Airplanes flew above.
They shot everything on sight.
They tried to run inside but it was too late and Roberto couldn't hear much.
More gunshots woke Augustine up.
Roberto ran outside. He was shot in the foot and he saw his wife, daughter and his two sons on the floor.
Dead. The planes had passed and Roberto fell to his knees, crying.
Augustine walked outside, rubbing the sleep out of his eyes.
"Mijo, stay in the RV."
Augustine stood there in shock.
"GO TO THE RV!"
Augustine ran in, bawling his eyes out.
"Stay in the car, Melinda!" Axel said, hearing faint gun shots. Melinda tried getting out.
Claudia looked at her grandfather, frightened.
"It's alright. We'll be alright."
Claudia nodded.
"What was that?" Anne turned to her brother.
"Officer?"
"I- I don't know. I'm not sure, Chandler."
"YO, Alison, what the hell is going on?!"
"Watch your mouth."
