They ran and ran.

What were they to do?

"We're just counting our days now." Romero stated.

"Who's left? Head count." Jaime said.

"Lucio, Romero, Roberto, Gus, Emil, Claudia, Anne, Jaime, Sheila, Melinda and me. That's all?" Axel asked.

"They didn't die. Not even when I chopped up its brains." Axel said, trying to stay calm.

Anne began to bawl, this was no place for a twelve year old girl who had just lost all her family.

Correction, this was no time. She straightened up, then as she realised the inevitable, she understood why Chandler had gone.

"It's the mass extinction of the human race." She said, wide- eyed.

"What?" said Axel for he was uneducated.

"Like the dinosaurs. Have you noticed they only eat humans?" Gus said.

Claudia gasped, "that's right!! We're all gonna die."

Axel raised his voice, but it wasn't loud enough for the zombies to hear, "we're not going to die. We have anuff supplies ta last us foreva."

"He's right. We mustn't give up. Faith is the one thing they have not taken from us. We have to keep it." Emilio said. "Now, I maybe of old age and no matter what I don't have much longer but there is hope in San Francisco."

"How do ya know?"

"Did you listen to anything I said, boy?"

"Did he just call me boy?" Axel faced Melinda. (Common quote but I heard wolverine's voice. X3: Last Stand when he first meets beast.)

"You never had faith, that's the problem with you know."

"Are you telling me to find Jesus? Well, you know what? I'd rather search for Waldo!"

"You are a poor, poor leader, Axel."

Axel removed his trench coat.

Melinda gasped quietly to herself, Anne and Sheila gazed in awe for Axel was in better shape than any of them could have imagined.

His white shirt tucked into his black pants and his dark blue tie made him look like some professor in a student/ teacher fiction.

He said in his gruff voice, "I ain't a poor leader, old man. You know what, I'm done here. I'm taking my shit so I don't have to deal with y'all. I'm taking half of the supplies, I'll last longer than you bitches." He grabbed a couple of bags and walked off into the distance.

California no longer had its sunny, beautiful scenery.

It was cold, dark and yellow rather than green.

No animals grazed around and the earthquakes became more vigorous as the days went by.

If the zombies didn't get them, surely the earth would.

Axel didn't know where he was going, that didn't make him any less different than the group he had left and the girl he had loved who stayed behind.

Axel didn't even know if he wanted her to follow. Just another mouth to feed, another body to protect. He sighed, another mouth to kiss, another body to love.

He shook her out of his head. This was better than seeing her being eaten alive.
