Minji's pov.
Saturday approached rapidly. Over the days, everyone was preparing for whatever was to come. It was much like the preparations we would go through at home for any business meeting, but it was weird seeing another side to it. When each boy was working and getting ready on Friday, it was my job to stay out of their way. But, of course, that got boring very quickly. So I decided to snoop.
I walked down the corridor slowly, hearing the fast taping of computer keys from Jungkook's office. Over the past three days, the boys had given me a little more freedom, and I was finally allowed to walk from one place to another within the house without a whole troop in tow. It made me feel some form of comfort, and there were some moments where I'd just walk around the house and nosy around, exploring as if I was a child again. I didn't go into any rooms that looked important or any of the boys offices though. I was scared of getting into trouble, and ninety percent of the time they were heavily bolted and locked with multiple different combinations and latches anyway.
The door to Jungkook's office was slightly ajar, and I peeked in. Jungkook was sitting at a big desk, facing the opposite wall. On the desk he had six different monitors, all going at the same time. He seemed to have a million different tabs open on every screen, deeply analyzing each one before typing up different codes. I wasn't sure if I wanted to bother him or not as he seemed very busy, but I hadn't yet spoken to Jungkook on my own, and I really wanted to find out more about him. It was almost like a force was pulling me to him, causing intriguing thoughts to formulate about him, making me want to know about him. It was like a magnet, and that force only strengthened as I pushed the door open enough so that I could slip through.
He didn't hear me enter, but he felt my presence as I walked over to him. He looked over his shoulder before turning back to his work, as if he didn't even see me.
"Why are you here?" He asked after a moment without looking behind him, still tapping away at the keyboard. I sat down on a chair a little away from him. "I was bored," I replied truthfully, and he turned to me. "Go annoy someone else. I'm busy," He stated. I looked down before reluctantly getting up from the chair. As I was about to leave the room, the frantic sound of typing abruptly stopped.
"Wait, come back. Don't talk to the others, I'm - just, come and talk to me," Jungkook said, and I turned to him again. I was taken aback by his sudden statement, but I went and sat back in the seat. This time he watched me as I walked to the chair, his eyes following my movements. When I sat down he proceeded to work, but slower this time, like his whole focus wasn't on the screens ahead of him anymore.
"So, what's that?" I asked, referring to the code on one of the screens. He smiled. "It's great, right? I'm just toggling some of the camera settings for later. You'd think for a Casino in an area full of crime, that held occasional meetings of well known Mafias, they'd have a better security system," He remarked, and I raised my eyebrows. "That's just a bunch of squiggles to me. I don't know how you do it," I admitted, squinting while trying to make some sense of the words, numbers and symbols written in green on the screen. He laughed quietly at my facial expression. It was the first time I'd heard him laugh. It surprised me. He rolled his chair over to mine, and then pulled mine over with his to the desk again. I was now sitting where he had been a moment ago.
"Right. You look for, like, patterns of letters, and then you try and substitute a guess for what it means. It's pretty easy if you know basic code language. Atbash is the easiest, because it's pretty much just the alphabet backwards, and if you use that, you're basically asking to be hacked. This is kind of tricky, because it's a combination cipher, a mix of a few different codes, but it's fine when you know what they are. For this particular camera, all the elements are on the left side and then what they do is on the right. Turning them off is as easy as counting to ten, but Boss wants them pitch black but still running, because then it will seem more as if it's an issue with the cameras and not a hacking. Doing that's easy, just changing the contrast and rewriting the code with this combination over it will do just that," He explained. I marveled as he pointed to different letters and hit buttons on his keypad. As I watched him work, I realized that was the most I'd heard him talk.
"It's insane how you can do that. I could never," I stated, and he turned his focus to me once again. "You can fight ten times better than I ever could, and I haven't even seen you in action properly yet. I wish I could do that. There's a reason I'm not a soldier. It gets on my nerves when people can do things I can't. I want to be good at everything. Seeing you fight Jimin...."
His voice trailed off and I noticed his left hand form into a slightly clenched fist. He had spoken with such passion about hacking, but when he was talking about fighting he got very uptight and angry. I backed away a little out of instinct. He seemed jealous of me, in a way? I didn't know for sure, but I decided after that it was best to let him work away on his own. After I left his room, I decided to take a walk to think. I knew what it felt like to live in someone's shadow, so perhaps that was what Jungkook was feeling? I wasn't sure, but I felt bad for leaving like that. My legs carried me all the way to the other side of the massive building, and I ended up standing at the double doors to the ward. I wasn't sure if there would be anyone in there, but I pushed the heavy doors open to the area anyway.
I walked into the ward to see a few soldiers in beds, two sleeping and one awake, looking at me as I came in. "Oh, sorry," I whispered, and he glared at me. "Seok," He spat, and his intimidating tone caused me to feel a sense of danger.
Oh stop it up Minji, he's the one in the hospital bed.
"You are?" I questioned, and he shook his head. "Nobody of importance. If you're looking for Mr. Jung, he's around here somewhere," He retorted, and he spoke no more after that. I furrowed my brows slightly, but just walked further into the ward, turning to the small office that was attached to the large room. I knocked on the door and was greeted by a quiet, "Come in."
I entered the room to see Hoseok sitting at a desk, sipping tea. I had to refrain from giggling a little. He seemed so pure, too pure. He was dressed in a oversized rainbow-colored sweater and straight-legged tan jeans. He smiled at me when I walked in, and I returned the smile genuinely. I sat down at the other side of his desk, and he took one last sip from his cup before looking at me.
"You okay?" He asked, and I nodded. "Just bored, I guess," I replied, and he nodded. I definitely felt most comfortable around Hoseok. He had never necessarily been mean to me, and other than being associated with the boys I felt like we could be good friends. "You ready for tonight?" I asked, and he nodded, his smile dropping as soon as I mentioned it. Every time someone spoke about anything business related, he got all focused and scary. It didn't suit his usually smiley face at all. "I've got everything I need, just to get there and get out now," He stated. "How about you?"
"What?" I asked, not prepared for that question whatsoever.
"How do you feel about it?" He repeated.
I felt confused. Nobody had asked me that since I came, and it felt weird for someone to ask me something of the sort. I shrugged. "I don't know. I guess I haven't really thought about how I feel. Haven't had the... uh... capability to think straight recently," I answered, and he smiled somewhat sympathetically.
"Seok Minji," He said, looking at me. I nodded, worried about the use of my full name. "If I could prevent this, I would, truly. I want to help you get out of here somehow. You don't deserve any of this. But we both know If I did that, we'd both be killed, along with your whole gang," He said. My eyes widened at his words. "You really would help me get out of here?" I asked, and he sighed. "I wish I could," He said again, and my smile dropped a little. "I appreciate that, Hobi, and I understand. I know you can't help me. I wish things were different," I said, and he nodded in agreement. "I do too, Minji. Here. For tonight, take this," He said, handing me over keys. My eyes widened at the sight of keys, and my immediate thought was 'freedom!' Hoseok noticed, because he smiled a small smile.
"Unfortunately, they're not to the front door," He said quickly, and my mood dropped. "They're to my room. Where you're staying right now can't be nice at all, and I think about you in that rock hard bed when I'm peacefully falling asleep in my silk sheet four poster one. Stay there for the night. I want you to try and sleep. I know it'll be hard, but it'll be best for you. I'll find you in the morning and tell you what I can."
I stood up and unconsciously pulled him into a hug. The fresh smell of the laundry detergent from his sweater and the strong scent of his cologne mixed together brought both tranquility and peace to me. I felt safe, I felt comfortable. He wrapped his arms around me and pulled me closer to him. I didn't want him to let go. I didn't want to let go of him.
"Thank you for being there for me, Hobi."
He pulled away from me and smiled, and I did the same. "I care about you, even though it may not seem like it."
