"Please (sob)...Don't take me away... Please d-don't (sob)...I'll be good I-I-I promise."
The loud roar of thunder rung in every corner of the room. The sounds of the storm carrying an unbearable feeling, intensifying the weeping sounds of the little girl sitting by the corner of the wall.
Nanny Dao had to leave the little girl at the orphanage, so she can go back to the mansion to work and supposedly pick her up at the end of the day. It was unfortunate that a strong storm unexpectedly hit their town, leaving her no choice but to stay at the mansion.
The kids in the orphanage were asleep. The elders were resting at the other side of the children's home after making sure everyone including the little girl was settled in.
"P-Please...I don't want to be (sob)...A-Alone again." The unceasing rumble of thunder woke a little boy from his slumber. He was about to sleep again when he heard a faint sound of crying by the corner. His curious nature incited him to get up from his bed, making his way to the corner where it was coming from.
He saw a small figure curled up in the corner of the wall beside the double bed, her shoulders were shaking while her head was tucked in between her knees. She looked really scared, every roar of thunder triggered a girlish squeal from the figure.
"Are you okay?" The Girl swiftly looked up upon hearing a small voice in front of her. The frightened look on her face made the boy stop from moving forward. Her big brown eyes were puffy, full of pain and distress. Her brown hair covering half of her pale face looking so untidy, yet so pretty at the same time.
She saw a pale, skinny boy holding a small teddy bear in front of her. His dark eyes were so big and so clear. It made her comfortable, knowing there was someone here aside from her. She felt less lonely.
They stared at each other, assessing every twitch on their faces.
"You can hold my hand if you want to." His voice were clear against the sounds of loud thunder claps.
She nodded lightly, tears still falling from her puffy eyes. He slowly approached her and sat beside the little girl.
He wiped the tears from her cheeks and without warning pulled her into a side hug. "Don't worry, it's just thunder. Here you can hold my bear if you want." He put it between them and continued to hug the little girl sideways.
"Are you scared of the thunder?" His small voice whispered in her ears, calming the little girl's heart.
"Yes." Her voice croaked.
"P'Gu told me that bears are strong and can protect you from any danger." He whispered.
"You can have my bear so you won't be scared anymore." He placed the little bear in her lap and faced her. He wiped the tears and the snot from the girls face using his bare hands and smiled at her.
The small set of dimples stunned her, giving him a small smile in return.
"Thank you." She said shyly, no longer bothered by the raging storm outside.
"You're welcome." He smiled back.
" I'm Barry." He introduced himself sweetly.
"I'm Yaya." She replied.
They talked about all kinds of things that a pair of young kids could talk about all night. The six year old little girl found her very first friend in Barry. She felt a tad of gladness, something she never felt before. She forgot even just for a little while, about the tragedies that struck her life at a young age, things she could barely understand.
----
4 years passed by in a blur, the 10 year old Yaya never understood why she wasn't living in their house anymore but she learned to just accept it. Day by Day Nanny Dao tells her how much she loves her and soon she began calling her Mama.
It was hard for a young child like her to understand the minds of adults. Questions begin to form but she never had the courage to ask Mae Dao about anything.
Why did she start living with her Nanny Dao when she turned six?
Why did her Dad not want her living at their house?
What did a six year old do to experience such kind of desertion?
It was one of the few questions she pondered about while growing up in the care of her Nanny.
"Mind sharing your thoughts, bunny?" Her thoughts were interrupted by a voice she was too familiar with.
"Bear, do you ever think about getting adopted?" She looked up at him. She was sitting on a swing while he was standing in front of her.
Barry became her best friend that night, eventually they became inseparable. Mae Dao's house was only a few houses away from the orphanage. She studied with the children from the orphanage and in some way felt like she was one of them.
She grew up Quiet and polite, only talking when spoken to. She was too shy and too smart for her age, can only be seen smiling and laughing when she's with Barry.
They were both alike, Barry was too quiet and too mature before she came. He never had any friends because he was too boring to be with according to the other children. When they became friends, it was the only time they saw him behave like a normal kid.
Barry was the only one with the ability to understand her silence and she was the only one who can make him speak without filter.
With each other they became two normal kids without the baggage life has placed on their shoulders.
"I don't want to leave you." His voice held a type of sadness that melted her young heart.
"What if I was the one to leave?" she asked looking down at her intertwined fingers on her lap.
"That wouldn't happen silly. Mae Dao wouldn't let that happen. "He stepped forward lightly flicking her forehead with his fingers.
"You can't live without me Bunny! I'm your bear, Remember?" He ran laughing at her pouting expression.
"Ow! Bear!"Yaya go up from the swing and chased Barry around the playground. They played and played like they always do, not knowing about the heartbreak they'll both experience a few hours later.
Yaya was arranged to go back to their family Mansion that night while Barry was meeting his new family the next morning. They never got to say Goodbye to each other, it was another pain that broke the young Yaya further.
When Yaya arrived at the family Mansion, it was only then she felt empty. Her dad was nowhere to be found, Mae Dao slowly told her that they'll both live there from then on.
"Where is Daddy?" Her big brown eyes looked up at Mae Dao's anxious ones.
"I'm sorry Baby." Mae Dao couldn't help but feel sadness for the little girl. She kneeled in front of the girl and hugged her tight. Just to make her feel how much she was loved and cherished.
"I'm sorry, but your dad is away on a business trip and I don't know when he'll come back." Mae Dao whispered to the little girl, she can feel the tears soaking her shirt and it's breaking her heart.
Yaya never complained, never questioned her about anything and never thrown a tantrum. She was always so quiet, she was too pure to deserve such heart break this young.
Mae Dao took care of this little girl since she was born, she won't trade anything for her little Yaya. She promised to herself that whatever happens, she'll make sure Yaya grows up Happy and cared for in place of her late Mother.
