Wuxian doesn't remember half of what happened on their way back. He must have fainted because at one point he was struggling to walk on his own since he is stubborn and wouldn't let Liang carry him and the next thing he knows, he's in a warm bed, surrounded by his soul-bond's arms.
Wuxian never thought that being in Wangji's arms was the best place to be. The taller man fits perfectly around him and his extremely warm body complements Wuxian's cold one. Wuxian felt a smile grace his face thinking about the hell Wangji must have raised trying to find him. He just hopes that Wangji didn't maim anyone or do something drastic. When it comes to Wuxian, Wangji would move mountains and forsake his principles.
Wangji whispers to his slowly waking soul-bond: "I thought we agreed that you would never leave me."
Wuxian whispers back: "I didn't leave.. I was mistakenly kidnapped."
Wangji sighs: "You have a fever again.."
Wuxian pouts: "Still not my fault.."
Wangji nuzzles his nose in Wuxian's golden hair and sighs tiredly: "I never thought there would come a time where I would wish for a boring day."
Wuxian chuckles and leans back to look at his soul-bond. He was about to say something cheeky until he saw the solemn look on Wangji's face: "What's wrong?"
Wangji swallows hard and tries to control his emotions. The few beats of silence made Wuxian more anxious: "Tell me!"
Wangji opened his mouth to say something but nothing came out. Words were failing him and the thought of saying them to his sick soul-bond made him want to deny everything and take the coward way out.
Wuxian sits up to take a better look at his surprisingly hesitant mate: "You're freaking me out. What is it?"
Wangji sits up too and puts his hands on Wuxian's cheeks to ground him: "When you went missing, we sent everyone out to look for you. We didn't know where to start and how we were going to find you, so the best idea was to scatter everyone in groups."
Wuxian blinks in confusion over why Wangji was telling him all this: "Ok.."
Wangji looks down, wishing that someone else was here to deliver this news: "Your disciples were divided among the groups because they know more about your special condition.."
Wuxian pushes Wangji away in frustration: "Just say what you have to say, Lan Wangji! You're scaring me!"
Wangji takes a deep breath and says: "Kaoji went out with the finders.."
Wuxian stumbled out of the bed, shaking his head and feeling dread wash over his body: "No.."
Wangji slowly followed his retreating soul-bond: "They encountered the faceless man and.. "
Wuxian screams: "NO! NO! NO!"
The door opens suddenly, revealing a concerned Zewu Jun and Healer Shi. Zewu Jun puts his hands up to stop Wuxian from running away: "Brother Wei, we didn't anticipate.."
Wuxian turns to scream at him: "DON'T YOU DARE TELL ME THAT! I told you it will happen! YOU ALL KNEW IT WILL HAPPEN!"
Wuxian covers his face with violently shaking hands and whispers: "Is he.. Is he dead?"
Healer Shi says in a calm voice: "He's dead."
Wuxian swallows a few more times and then whispers: ".. and.. and the other finders?"
Healer Shi shakes her head: "Five finders were murdered too."
Wuxian crumbles to the ground in sobs. Wangji sits next to him on the ground, reaching for him but Wuxian aggressively slaps his hands away: "I TOLD YOU THIS WOULD HAPPEN! HOW COULD YOU LET IT HAPPEN?"
Wangji was clearly distraught by his mate's rejection. Zewu Jun slowly approached the emotional man and said: "Brother Wei, we cannot change fate. Only you can change the future."
Wuxian wrapped his arms around himself tightly, rocking back and forth: "MY KID IS DEAD! I DON'T CARE ABOUT FREAKING FATE! BRING HIM BACK!"
Wangji tries again to reach Wuxian but he is rejected again: "We can't do that, Wei Ying."
Wuxian shakes his head as more tears flow down his cheeks: "I don't.. I can't.."
Zewu Jun kneels on Wuxian's other side, careful not to touch the extremely emotional man: "Brother Wei, your disciple did not die in vain. He died honorably."
Wuxian slams his hand on the ground: "HE'S A CHILD! SCREW HONOR! I WANT HIM BACK!"
Zewu Jun shared a worried look with Wangji as the younger brother whispers: "Wei Ying, calm your breath. What is done is done."
Wuxian rocks himself for a few minutes in silence as he sheds more tears. He whispers tiredly after a while: "I.. I wanna go home."
Zewu Jun frowns: "We still have work to do. Just a few more days.."
Wuxian sways in his spot and Wangji leans in to support him. Wuxian looks tearfully at him: "Lan Zhan, take me home. Please.. I can't do this.. I can't.."
Wangji's heart breaks over how desperate and frightened his weak mate was. He nods while laying the sick man down: "Alright.."
Wuxian felt drained and whispered before consciousness left him: "Thank you.."
