Lan Wangji was on his way to the Underworld Room to assist some of the senior disciples in cleansing a cursed object they collected in their travels. He found himself pausing in front of the Treasure Room on his way there. Healer Shi informed them yesterday that Wuxian's last healing session will be in three days. She will then unseal his spirit container and his health will finally improve. Wangji's soul-bond was so anxious that Healer Shi mixed a calming potion for him to take to relax him. Wangji left this morning after making sure Wuxian drank the potion but didn't have time to stick around and comfort his worried mate.
The thought of Wuxian finally having his body fixed made Wangji smile uncontrollably all day. It seems to freak out some of the disciples but he didn't care. Wangji couldn't help walking into his mate's Room and into the garden he made for him.
He found Wuxian sleeping on a patch of grass that the snow just cleared since winter is finally over. He was surrounded by a bunch of docile rabbits who are probably being influenced by a sleeping Da Ziran in her rabbit form. His golden hair was fanned out around him as Hweiru kept collecting and decorating it with flowers and leaves. Wangji smiles over how cute his daughter was, moving slowly and tip-toeing so she wouldn't wake the resting man.
After watching them for a few seconds, Wangji went closer and sat next to his sleeping soul-bond. Hweiru bows to him with a wide smile and gives him flowers to add to her master piece. If Wangji was asked what was heaven, this moment would be his answer.
After placing a few more flowers into his mate's majestic golden hair, Wangji leans close and places a soft kiss on Wuxian's cheek. Hweiru sees that and does the same when he moves back and smiles at him when he pats her head in pride.
After a few minutes of silence, Hweiru finally finishes her masterpiece and sits on Wuxian's other side to watch Wangji affectionately run his fingers on her Mama's face and through his hair. She whispers to Wangji: "Father, is Mama happy?"
Wangji looks up in worry: "Why do you ask?"
She looks sadly at the sleeping man: "Happy people don't cry a lot."
Wangji felt his heart ache a little. His little girl was right. Wuxian cries more than he laughs and he prays to all that is holy that after his body is fixed, his emotional state elevates too.
Wangji reaches over the sleeping man and grabs his daughter's small hand: "People are never happy or sad all the time. We all have our ups and downs. It's the way of life."
Hweiru places her head on Wuxian's chest and sighs in content: "You and Mama make me happy."
Wangji smooths her hair back: "You both make me happy too."
The sweet moment was broken when the earth underneath them shook and Wangji felt the wards around Cloud Recesses fall. He grabs his discarded sword and looks around anxiously, not sure what is going on. Wen Ning lands near them and covers Wangji's back as the ground continues to shake. Wen Ning: "What's going on?"
Wangji shakes his head: "Someone forcefully broke our wards."
Wen Ning frowns: "How? Isn't this the most heavily guarded place on earth?"
Wangji purses his lips and after waiting vigilantly for a few seconds, Bhao runs into the garden and says: "We got reports from different parts of Cloud Recesses that we're being attacked by the rogue faction of Shenhua Clan."
Wangji kneels near his still sleeping mate. He gently rubs his thumb on Wuxian's cheek to wake him up: "Wei Ying?"
The sleeping man did not even flinch. Wangji worriedly places his fingers on Wuxian's neck to check his pulse. It seems that whatever Healer Shi gave him knocked him out hard. He picks up his mate in his arms and says: "We have to move to the cold cave."
He looks down at his daughter who had a serious expression on her face and took the liberty of carrying the sleeping Da Ziran in her rabbit state: "Don't fall back, Hweiru."
She nods and starts running after her father when they start moving.
They ran into Zewu Jun and Healer Shi who rushed towards the Treasure Room when the earth shook. They received a nod from Wangji and fell in line as they made their way towards the cold cave.
Once inside, Wangji places his passed out mate on Zewu Jun's lap per his instruction. The ground was too cold for the smaller man to lay on. Wangji frowned at Shi: "What did you give him?"
Healer Shi busies herself with checking the sleeping man: "A mild sedative. His body is too small, I might have overestimated the dosage. It won't hurt him, he will just sleep it off."
Wangji didn't have time to criticize her mistake. He gives his brother a warning look before he runs out the cave to help protect their home. Wen Ning, who couldn't enter the cave, stayed outside and guarded the entrance.
Zewu Jun looks at the now shivering man in his arms and whispers to Healer Shi: "Help me take off my robes to cover him." She does as he asks and takes off her outer layer as well to help warm Wuxian up. When they are done, Hweiru moves closer to place the sleeping rabbit underneath the covers as well: "Da Ziran is cold too."
Zewu Jun smiles reassuringly at the worried child: "We will be fine here. Don't worry, Hweiru."
She smiles back. If she was any other child, his hollow promises would've worked. The only thing she can trust is the dagger hidden in her robes. With one hand holding her Mama and the other clasping the handle of her weapon, she sits vigilantly, staring at the cave entrance and ready to protect her happiness.
