Wangji is a quiet man. He enjoyed silence more than anything else. But at the moment, he hated it. His soul-bond had been battling fever and extreme depression all the way back to Cloud Recesses. They actually had to stop a few times to get him into a proper bed and serve him a hot meal that he refused to eat.
It's been seven days and they are finally at the gates of Cloud Recesses and Wangji couldn't be more disappointed in himself. They have failed, things have fallen apart and the worst part is, Wuxian, once again, was the one who suffered the most on their trip.
Zewu Jun had to think fast on his feet to try and salvage the situation. If his presence was not important to Wuxian's healing sessions, he would've probably stayed back in Jin Clan territory to try and fix the mess they made. He sent Mianmian with the spirit pouch to Carp Tower to look into their forbidden books to find a way to free the trapped souls inside. He convinced Liang to move temporarily to the main city in Jin Sect, under Leader Ziyang's protection so Biming wouldn't try to find him once again.
The prophecy book was missing. Zewu Jun assumes that Biming came back and took it while they were busy trying to find Wuxian. Everything was a mess and Zewu Jun was too busy dealing with everything to worry about the future.
Healer Shi was frustrated too. She knew that Wuxian was acting up, refusing to eat and speak because he was distraught. His high fever was making him more cranky and in turn leaving her on edge. She was stuck between feeling sorry for the smaller man in her care and wanting to smack some sense into him. People die all the time, all you can do is grieve and move on.
Wuxian finally woke up fully aware of his surroundings a few days after they arrived in Cloud Recesses. The fever finally broke but he was left with an extremely weak body and head full of dark thoughts. He felt someone pat his back gently and he hums his appreciation.
Grandmaster Qiren whispers: "You can't just wither and waste in here for the rest of your life, Son. You need to move on."
Wuxian opens his tired eyes to look at his father's concerned ones: "I failed."
Qiren smiles sadly at him: "We all fail sometimes. You can't possibly believe that we will be able to command fate without consequences."
Wuxian: "I'm so tired."
Qiren continues to pat his back: "Once you eat and recover, things will get back to normal."
Wuxian weakly shakes his head: "No. I'm so tired of being me. I have nothing more to give."
Qiren: "That's not true."
Wuxian sighs: "That's how I feel."
Qiren lets silence wash over them for a few seconds then leans in to whisper to him: "We all have faith in you, Wei Wuxian. A man with so many followers will never be alone. Depend on us and we will carry you to the end."
Wuxian looks sorrowfully at his father: "I killed my disciple. You will all die if I depend on you."
Qiren: "We will all die eventually. What's great about life is that we choose how and with whom we wish to live it. We chose you, so let us enjoy our freedom by serving a greater cause."
Wuxian heaves a sob: "He was a child.. They were all children.."
Qiren: "They were cultivators. They died trying to protect you. Don't undermine their feats by belittling their ending."
Wuxian nods slowly and closes his eyes to think for a second: "I don't know how to get past this.."
Qiren turns around and nods to someone at the door: "First we eat and then let life dictate our next move. Everything is perfect in it's right time."
