Days fluttered by like butterflies, dark and mysterious those butterflies were. The days past like a blur between home and school. Each and everyday the internal pressure amounted. I wanted to confront Touka and get the truth out of her, but I know it would be opposites of helpful.
Suspicions. Lies. Betrayal.
Also a darker thoughts surpressed at the back of my mind I refused to acknowledge. The men from S.H.A.D.O.W. And the 'task' they assigned to me.
I woke up on Monday entangled between the sheets with sweat on my forehead. I just had another nightmare that I am not willing to think about again. I shook the dream out of my mind and went to the kitchen and drink a glass of water and prepared myself to school. I did not want to face Touka but it is inevitable since she sit beside me. There is no way for me to escape. I sighed and set out to school. The absence of shadowy men lurking outside my apartment were apparent.
I felt a cold finger poking me.
"Akira?"
I turned to see the beautiful girl beside me. She look the same as always, with her dark purple hair and large eyes. Yet something had changed between us and we both felt it.
"Ah... Yes?"
She kept away her books slowly before saying to me" It's a long time since we hang out together. I was wondering... If you want to go to Anteiku with me later? We could order a cup of your favorite coffee.. "
I smiled. I was on the verge of agreeing. But then I stopped. No. The emotional tension inside me would be too much to bear. These few days were sort of personal hell for me. All I want was to curl up in a dark corner and scream. But life still goes on. And all I can do is to shut all my emotions down. I can do that. Or so I say to my own reflection in the mirror.
"I'm sorry. I can't today."
I need to get away from you. From.. The S.H.A.D.O.W Men. From reality. From everything damnit!
I slunged my bag over my shoulder and walked away, vaguely aware of Touka's confused attempts to call me back. I took the longer route home to calm my stormy thoughts; a quiet winding lane surrounded by dark, blustery autumn trees, with brown and maple leaves scattered on the path. The weather was cold, forming a slight mist. I listened to the rythm of my own footsteps as leaves rustled around me. It distracted me from my situation. Suddenly, a gust of cold wind swept by my shoulder, so subtle it felt as gentle as a breath. It came from my left.
"Boo."
"Aaaaarrrgghh!"
I jumped back and landed painfully on my backside on the leaves strewn land. Towering before me is the scary maskmaker himself, even scarier than before, though I admit it only to myself. He bent down and extended a hand towards me "Do you need help?"
"No." I got up hastily and took a step back from the path away from him, only to find myself at the end of the slope. Down the grassy slope I went, rolling and tumbling until a pair of strong hands picked me up by my waist.
"Hey! Put me down!"
Instead of doing what I commanded, he lifted me even higher. He seemed unperturbed by all my wriggling and attempts to push him away. He held me as far away as his long limbs would allow, and even with my limited experience with social and humans in general, I can tell that he is strong. And unexceptionally strong. A normal man would not have accomplished that, it would have been too much effort, straining too much muscle at an unnatural angle.
"Put me down."
He cocked his head to a side. "Hmmmm." He scrunitised me from my head to toe. "Did you realised that if you scream, nobody could hear you?"
"I can scream very loud!" I kicked as much as I could but that monster just smiled, ever so slightly. "Interesting. But there is nobody here, it is a very quiet place indeed."
"Shut up and put me down! NOW!"
"No."
"What?!"
He held me closer to him. "You know... You are extemely soft for a human girl. And your scent is a sweet as honey ...and as fresh as sunshine."
That creepy bastard put me down but held both of my wrist in his grip.
"Your skin is so warm and alive. So... Delicious."
OH
I stopped trying to pull my wrist away, a stupid move, really, since his iron grip would just separate my arm and my wrist.
He sighed. "Your eyes are beautiful. Just... Beautiful."
This is getting creepy. Before this, I would have called him pervert. But now... Warning bells are ringing in my head so loud that I almost felt dizzy. That, and the beating of my heart like a drum.
In this inappropriate time I was aware of his strong grip, cold like ice against my warm skin, and his grip was firm and strong, yet nearly gentle, as if he is handling something fragile.
I was also aware that he is slowly pulling me towards him and I dig my heels firmly into the ground. But he is still too strong for me.
"Stop. What are you doing? Stop!"
My instinct kicked in and fear flooded through me. I don't mind if my plan is spoiled. Not at all. As long as I don't end up as anybody's dinner tonight.
Now I used my full force to kick and trash around and I started screaming. Still he is too strong. "Shh... Did I just said nobody can hear you?"
His words did not seem to register in my head. I am panicking and slowly turning into jelly. Unwillingly, my eyes felt wet. Oh no.Please don't cry in front of this tattoed monster. And then I cried.
I really cried.
"Please... Please.. Let go of me.." I sniffed and to my own disgust, a tear rolled down my cheek. He looked at me with his usual calm expression, but his features seemed to soften. He pulled me unexpectedly to his chest, causing me to stop crying. He then wrapped me in his arms and stroked my hair slowly.
I immediately ceased crying. The warmth of his embrace seemed to smolder away the chilly weather and the coldness of his skin. I looked up from his chest but he was so tall, all I can see is a tattoo on his neck which looked like a latin inscription. I pressed my cheeks against his hard chest. He looked down at me and our eyes met.
