Stiles and Malia were back while I was sat on my bed staring out of my window, Hallow's head resting in my lap as I played with his hair, gently brushing it out of his face as he slept peacefully.
The next morning the two of us quietly headed into school, or rather I did, Hallow wouldn't shut up.
"It was amazing! It-it was like the shadows were helping you, like you were drawing power from them. It was incredible!"
"Hallow-"
"And! And, and, your eyes, they changed colour! Oh god last night was amazing!" I stopped in my tracked and stared at my newly found companion.
"What do you mean they changed colour?"
"Your eyes. They went this- your iris' went bright purple and the whites of your eyes went pitch black!" I shook my head and headed over to my locker, pulling it open and grabbing the books I needed for first period. "I've lived a lot of lives, like a lot-" I sent him a look to get to the point. "And in those lives I've served loads of witches." He whispered the word 'witches' and I sent him a look, playfully nudging his arm to be careful. "Some powerful ones too, but you, you're different." I closed my locker, following him to his. "I've never seen someone find out they're a witch and immediately grasp the concept of spells, or even try creating one straight away." He pulled open his locker and rummaged through, grabbing similar books to me. "But you did, but that's not why I'm so impressed." He smelled the door and excitedly went with me to chemistry. "You asked a goddess to lend you her powers and she did, sending shadow people to act as a sort of transfer." He plopped into his seat next to me and leaned over to me. "All the whispering and muttering was of the transfer of power, you now have Aceso's healing ability and can use it without verbalising a spell." I rest my chin on my hand and gazed at him curiously. "But again, not what surprised me, your eyes changed. I have never, never in my entire centuries of serving a witch, I've never seen that happen, even with the most powerful witches I've served."
"You talk fast when you're excited." My black haired friend chuckled and shook his head.
Class came to an end and I hugged next period's books close to my chest as we asked the corridors.
"So what do you think it means?" Hallow hummed.
"What?"
"My eyes changing." He nodded his head in understanding and then shrugged.
"No idea. Why don't we go to the library after school, try find out?" I nodded in agreement.
And as planned, we headed into the library after school, spotting the McCall pack researching something in the mythology section.
We had been in here hours, just as the other had been, although many of them had gone, although Stiles had fallen asleep on a bunch of books.
"You found anything yet?" Hallow shook his head, a nervous and boyish smile, his hair flopping around as he did so, although reasonably messed up, although he soon left and I kept an eye on Hallow as he gradually nodded off.
My familiars head shot up as he heard something.
"What was that?"
"What?"
"The scream."
"What scream? I didn't hear anything."
Hallow shook his head, thinking he was just hearing things, but still spoke again.
"There it is again."
"Someone screaming?" He nodded and slowly stood up, packing his things away and slinging his bag over his shoulder. I did the same, grabbing the book on witches and slipping it into my bag. the doors to the library slammed open and I heard trainers squeak, peaking over the upper floors railings and seeing Stiles holding a wrench. Hallow and I shared a look and staring back down. Stiles' breathing was erratic and he was keeping an eye on the door, gripping the tool harder and not turning his back.
"I think someone's following him." I nodded in agreement and quietly crouched down, Hallow doing the same. The doors opened again and I saw my friends eyes widen in panic before looking around frantically as the doors swung. Hallow and I took some steps back towards the bookcases in an attempt to stay hidden.
"It's Malia, should I text her back?" A voice called out, Stiles having gone into hiding. I swallowed thickly. "You don't really know who I am, do you Stiles? Maybe you, uh, heard about my father. Did your dad tell you about him?" Hallow and I shared a look. "Did Sheriff Stilinski ever tell you about the time he was still Deputy and his partner got caught in a shoot-out." I was crouched with Hallow, his hands on both sides of me on the bookshelves so he could stay balanced. "Did he tell you a bullet shattered my dad's T-9 vertebra? Went right through his spinal cord. You know what that means? It means that everything below his waist is useless, and not just his legs. I bet he told you some of it." I swallowed again, scared to know what would happen from here, I could already smell blood, dried and fresh. "But I bet he probably left out the part where he was sitting in a car calling for backup while my dad was going in alone. Did he tell you that he was too scared, too much of a frightened little bitch to go in after him? Or do scared little bitches not tell their little bitch sons about their failures? About how they put their partner in a wheelchair for the rest of his life?" I took a small step back into Hallow and he let one of his hands drop so his arm could keep me steady, sending me a concerned gaze. I nodded an okay. There was silence as I heard this guy slowly ascend the stairs. I lightly and repeatedly hit Hallow's arm, forcing him to take a few steps back with me to hide in the shadows. We held our breaths just as he turned around and walked back down the stairs, soon releasing that breath. The sound of a fight developing echoed through the room and we shared a look, standing up and carefully heading over to the single bookcase by the stairs, crouching to stay out of sight just a little bit. I nodded over to the scaffolding to silently say where they were. As the two were climbing the scaffolding, the other teen spoke. "Don't worry Stiles, I'm not gonna kill you. I'm just gonna eat your legs." His voice distorted on the final sentence and I grimaced, trying to stay quiet.
Stiles pulled a pin and we all heard the scaffolding fall, something along the sound of slicing ripped through the air and I covered my mouth, staring at the fallen scaffolding with wide eyes. This boy had fallen too and had been impaled on one of the pieces. He spat up blood, staring right up at Stiles, his head lulling to the side over to us as I dropped to sit on a step on the stairs. As Stiles went over to the phone, Hallow and I descended the stairs as quietly as possible, I was still staring at the dead boy in shock and horror.
Stiles put the phone down and I caught his eyes. The words got caught in his mouth and I sent him a slightly scared smile.
"It was self-defence, it's fine Stiles..." he shakily nodded. "We need to go, okay?" My voice was soft and cracking ever so slight but he still nodded, so all of us hurried out of the building and to our designated cars.
"Stay in here." Hallow nodded and remained in my room as I wandered over to Stiles' room, quietly walking into the room and taking a seat on his bed, reading over his boards. "Someone could have taken the body." Stiles whipped around to face me with a confused expression. "He wasn't in there was he?" He shook his head. "Exactly, so someone could have taken his body and cleaned everything up." Stiles sighed and dropped onto the bed beside me, looking at me for help. I just shrugged with a smile. "I can give you a hand if you need some sleep?" He nodded and just lay on his bed where he already was. I smile sadly at the boy, making him close his eyes and quietly whispering. "By this candle he does sleep, hidden from the day, in the night so deep. O Lady Moon, guide his dreams, cover him with your beautiful beams. As the candle flame dies, please close his eyes...." Stiles lay on his side, dosing off as he looked at me tiredly. I could see the brief reflection of my purple and black eyes in his brown ones. "Allow him to wake in the warmth of The Sun." I sent him a soft smile as his eyes finally closed and he slipped off into a deep sleep.
