Jonathan Herondale was born to Stephen Herondale and Céline Herondale. His mother had been fed Angel Blood while she was expecting him. This later resulted in him having extra Angel Blood of the Angel Ithuriel. Valentine Morgenstern, the man who gave his mother the extra Blood, later killed Stephen and Céline. He was raised by Valentine Morgenstern and was taught that 'to love is to destroy'. Valentine staged Michael Wyaland's death, making Jace believe that he was a Wayland. He was adopted by the Lightwoods at the age of 10. He went to live at the New York Institute. Alexander Lightwood later became his Parabatai.
