Robert Lightwood is the former husband of Maryse Lightwood and the father of Alec, Izzy and Max Lightwood, as well as the adoptive father of Jace Herondale.
In his youth, Robert used to be a part of Valentine's Circle. Just before the Uprising he and Maryse made a deal with the Clave, to save themeselves. Due to their coopeartion, their circle-runes didn't get cursed and Robert was allowed to be the head of the New Yorker Institute.
When Valentine returned, Robert and Maryse lost their control over the institute, due to their past connection to Valentine.
After those events Robert went back to Maryse and Max. It didn't take him too long to decide to cheat on his wife. It led to a divorce.
As the investiagation on the former Circle members reopened, Maryse, his ex-wife by now, lost her runes. He made a deal with the Clave and got assigned to the Los Angeles Institute.
