Lydia Branwell was the acting head of the New York Institute for a while. You would typically see her in formal dressing, and with her hair tied back in some sort of ponytail. That's Lydia Branwell, a formal person who is ready to lead, whether it's an army or just a couple of shadowhunters at her ready.
Lydia is of a Nephilim bloodline descent which means that she is a human who was born with angel blood coursing through her veins. Literally. Now she doesn't seem to have an exact area to reside. It seems as if she jumps from place to place every now and then. It does seem like she spends a lot of her time in Idris though. If you don't know Idris is a Shadowhunter sanctuary away from mundanes and downworlders. Most shadowhunters are from Idris with a couple exceptions. Those being Clary and others, but we aren't talking about them.
Now Lydia seems to be the only one of her bloodline to appear in the show or books, but that doesn't mean that there aren't any. It just means that we have yet to be introduced to any other Branwell's. The only time we ever see her close to getting a family is in the last episode of season one which is titled Malec. She is set to marry Alec Lightwood to unite two very respected bloodlines together. Unfortunately that doesn't work out, and we don't really see much of Lydia after that.
Lydia is one of those characters that you don't really get too much information on, but that you will still love anyways. She is charming and one heck of a strong female character that younger viewers can use as a role model to look up to. Also she doesn't take anyone's crap, and doesn't need any man to have her know that she is beautiful and she is strong.
From a distance you would look at her and think that she isn't scared of anything, but everyone is scared of something. Whether it's heights, or spiders, clowns, or even death. Everyone has that one thing that freaks them out. It looks to be that hers is losing though. For people to start getting the idea that she isn't strong enough to keep something in check or to get a job done. She can and she has proved it multiple times in the little time that we got to see her.
Now I hope this article has shown you a little insight on the fabulous and moving character that is Lydia Branwell.
